HURT ROAD Happenings January, 2012 Following Christ s command to make MATURE, ACTIVE, disciples. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and both are preserved. Luke 5 Happy New Year! 2012 promises to bring with it several exciting opportunities for us here at HRBC, and I can t wait to get started! Humans are creatures of habit. We like to do the same things over and over. Repetitiveness brings comfort because we know what to expect; however, Jesus has something to say to us regarding 2012. In 2011 we lost one of the most innovative thinkers of our time. Although I wouldn t advocate his lifestyle, the founder of Apple, Steve Jobs, was an innovator. He pursued his task with passion. You and I have heard the saying, If it s not broken, don t fix it, but Steve Jobs refused to live by this creed. He was always thinking, How can I improve what we have? And if it eliminates what we already did then I am satisfied with that. Here are a couple of quotes from him that I would like to share with you. When I hire somebody the real issue for me is, are they going to fall in love with Apple? Because if they fall in love with Apple, everything else will take care of itself. They ll want to do what s best for Apple, not what s best for them, what s best for Steve, or anybody else. Innovation has nothing to do with how many R&D dollars you have. When Apple came up with the Mac, IBM was spending at least 100 times more on R&D. It s not about money. It s about the people you have, how you re led, and how much you get it. Now let me interpret these quotes for our purposes. We have made it our goal to create MATURING, ACTIVE DISCIPLES, and the real issue for me is if you fall in love with Jesus and following what He wants then everything else will take care of itself. Falling in love with Him results in people who will not do what s best for them, or best for the Pastor, or anybody else. In my last newsletter article I expressed my lack of satisfaction. This is not a reflection on anyone here at HRBC, it is a passion to do more for Christ. Innovation scares people, because it brings with it a little bit of uncertainty. I want to express to you that money is not the driver of our ministry here God is. The things that are important to consider here are our people, how we are led, and do our people get it? We are called to reach a community for Christ. 2012 promises to bring some new and innovative ideas to accomplish this task, and along the way we hope to continue to move toward the goal of becoming MATURING, ACTIVE DISCIPLES. In His Arms, Pastor Mike...Jesus...spake...saying, All power is given unto me...go ye therefore teaching whatsoever I have commanded you I am with you alway Amen. (Matthew 28:18-20)

Prayer Walking January 14th 9:30 am The first half of the 2011-2012 AWANA year has gone very well. Thanks to all of the volunteers for contributing their time and effort into helping teach the clubbers about Christ. The Christmas Cantata, which had the AWANA clubbers singing with the Adult Choir, was awesome! A special thanks to Joanie and Beth Ann for their hard work in preparing the clubbers for the performance. We have some exciting theme nights in store for the second half of the AWANA year. AWANA will commence again after the CCSD Christmas & winter break has ended. The schedule for January and the first week of February is: January 1 & 8 January 15 January 22 January 29 February 5 NO AWANA B.A.R.F. Night (Be A Real Friend & Bring a Real Friend) Regular Club Night Favorite Color Night (Wear As Much of Your Favorite Color As Possible) Super Bowl Service (NO AWANA). What a year 2011 was! It has ended just like it began for Club 180 full throttle! When I look back at all of the things we did this year I am amazed at how we fit it all in. Bible studies, Winter Jam, Super Bowl Service, Winter Retreat, Student Life @ the Beach, Teen Takeovers, Fast Food Runs, football games, softball games, service projects, Swim & Scripture, and so much more! Our youth were out there taking names and spreading the name above all names Jesus Christ! I m so proud of all they accomplished this year and the spiritual growth I have seen in all of them. This year saw six students (Cameron Foster, Hunter Jefferson, Tori Mullins, Ty Mullins, Shelby Spivey & Taylor Watson) join the group on Promotion Sunday in August. It also saw two of our students walk across the stage to receive their diplomas (Brendy Parker & Brendan Young). We celebrated birthdays all throughout the year but none more special than the celebration of Grace Gamel s rebirth when she was baptized this year! As 2011 ends, I want to thank everyone who helped out this year with Club 180; whether that be in service, hosting a teen takeover, chaperoning an event, giving a donation to one of our events, and most certainly for all of the prayers you have prayed on behalf of our students. And a special thanks to all of the teachers who volunteer their time during the year and Patti Barnett for opening her pool to the youth each week during the summer. I know that 2012 will be another exciting year for our youth. Please continue to lift them up in prayer that they would always be doing that which is pleasing to God and would always bring honor and glory to His name! Wayne

Missions Minded by Athena Long Well, The New Year is upon us...the year Twenty Twelve... It should prove to be just as amazing & difficult as all the others we have lived through. Why? Because things change, and we are creatures of habit; because there is sin in the world; and because God is in control and He has set a wonderful plan in place & we are ALL a part of it. I find myself thinking particularly about the HRBC logo we adopted last year, and where I m at right now on the color wheel, and where Jesus was on it...the Bible tells us what He did in each area of Worship, Word, Ministry & Missions He never stopped until He went to Heaven. We just celebrated Jesus' birthday which happened 2000 years ago - do you remember what happened twelve years later? That was the year that Jesus said, Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? At twelve years old, Jesus had taken it upon Himself to begin doing what He had been sent to earth to do...he was putting His Heavenly Father's plan into action. He had spent enough time in God's presence & learned enough to know exactly what God's will for His life was and He was eager to begin. Now aside from Jesus being God in flesh and already having some foreknowledge, He was just like us in many respects. He got tired, tempted and thrilled; life was hard and people didn't understand Him; He had friends and family to get sick, go away or die; and surely there were distractions of things and people that were more enjoyable than the task(s) He knew He should do. But none of those things kept Jesus from living an honorable life and accomplishing His part of God's Mission. Then, at the end of His earthly life, He passed The Mission baton to His disciples and soon sent His Spirit to dwell in every one of them - of US. He promised that His disciples (us too) would not be alone through the trials, troubles AND triumphs they would experience. So now, we have everything at our disposal to be disciples that change the world according to God's plan (just like those we read of in the Scriptures). The differences between 2012 and 0-70 (and beyond) have been carefully orchestrated so that NOW is the best time for EACH OF US to accomplish our own purpose in God's plan. We'll know when we're done when we look right in Jesus' eyes as He says, Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Enter into my rest. Until that day, let us be about our Father's business, sharing the Gospel and sparking the desire for Jesus in people's hearts. This is a colorful life we're living. I look forward to living it to the fullest with you because Jesus, our Christ, is counting on us.
