ANNOUNCEMENTS and WELCOME PRELUDE Canon in D Major J. Pachelbel, arr. Rick Parks Dorann Bartels Please stand CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, the Lord of Israel who comes to set us free, the mighty Savior who comes to show mercy, the Dawn from on high who guides us into peace. C: Amen P: Let us come before God in confession. Brief silence for reflection P: To you, O God, C: we lift up our souls. You know us through and through; we confess our sins to you. Remember not our sins; remember us with your steadfast love. Show us your ways; teach us your paths; and lead us in justice and truth, for the sake of your goodness in Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. P: Children of God, come with joy and draw water from the well of salvation. Remember the gift of baptism: your sin is washed away in the name of Jesus; you belong to Christ; you are anoninted to serve. Stand up and raise your heads! The reign of God is near. C: Amen 2

Monk, 1823-1889 Text and Music Public Domain PRAYER OF THE DAY L: Let us pray. Stir up your power, Lord Christ, and come. By your merciful protection alert us to the threatening dangers of our sins, and redeem us for your life of justice, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen 4

Please stand for the GOSPEL ACCLAMATION P: A Reading from St. Luke C: Glory to you, O Lord P: Jesus said, "When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you will know that its destruction is near. Then let those in Judaea flee into the mountains, and let those in the city depart, and don't let those in the countryside enter into the city because these are days of retaliation to fulfill all that has been written. Woe to those who are pregnant and nursing their babies in those days. For a great distress will be upon the earth and wrath against this people. They will fall by the edge of the sword, and they will be led away as captives into all the 5

nations. Jerusalem will be trembled by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles would be fulfilled. "There will be signs on the sun, moon, and stars. Upon earth there will be distress among nations, anxiety over roaring seas and surging waves. There will be people fainting from fear and apprehension from what is coming upon the inhabited world. For the powers of heaven will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Humanity coming upon a cloud with much power and glory. When these things begin to happen, get up and raise your heads because your liberation is drawing near." He told a parable to them, "Look at the fig tree and all the trees. Whenever they are already sprouting, by seeing it you know for yourselves that summer is already near. So too whenever you see these things happening you know that God's reign is near. Truly I tell you that this generation will definitely not pass away until everything happens. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will definitely not pass away. Pay attention among yourselves lest your hearts be burdened in dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of daily life, and that day suddenly comes upon you like a trap. For it will overtake all who dwell upon the face of the earth. Stay alert in each critical time, praying in order that you would have the ability to escape all these things which are about to happen and to stand before the Son of Humanity." (Luke 21:20-36 NRCV) P: This is the Gospel of the Lord C: Praise to you O Christ. CHILDREN S MESSAGE & NOISY OFFERING Offering will be going to Compass Buddy Bags SERMON Pastor Rick Carlson 6

6:00 HOLY BAPTISM OF BRANDT JESSE WEAVER INTRODUCTION Pastor: In Holy Baptism our gracious heavenly Father liberates us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; in the waters of Baptism we are reborn children of God and inheritors of eternal life. By water and the Holy Spirit we are made members of the Church which is the body of Christ. As we live with him and with his people, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God. PRESENTATION Pastor: Who presents this child for Holy Baptism? Sponsors: We present Brandt Jesse Weaver to receive the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. Pastor: As you bring Brandt to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: To live with him among God s faithful people, bring him to the word of God and the holy supper, teach him the Lord s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in his hands the holy scriptures, and nurture him in faith and prayer, so that he may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. Do you promise to help Brandt grow in the Christian faith and life? Parents: We do. 8

Pastor: Sponsors, do you promise to nurture Brandt in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God s Spirit, and help him live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with the church? Sponsors: We do. PROFESSION Pastor: Let us profess the faith in which we baptize today: Congregation: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THANKSGIVING AT THE FONT BAPTISM Pastor: Brandt Jesse Weaver is baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen LAYING ON OF HANDS Pastor: God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we give you thanks for freeing your sons and daughters from the power of sin and for raising them up to a new life through this holy sacrament. Pour your Holy Spirit upon Brandt; the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence. Amen 9

SIGNING WITH THE CROSS Pastor: Brandt, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. Amen PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS PRAYER FOR PARENTS Pastor: O God, the giver of all life, look with kindness upon Jesse and Lindsey. Let them ever rejoice in the gift you have given them. Make them teachers and examples of righteousness for their child. Strengthen them in their own Baptism so they may share eternally with their child the salvation you have given them, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen WELCOME Pastor: Members of First Lutheran, you have witnessed the Baptism of Brandt. Will you pray for him and share your faith with him? Will you remind him that he belongs to Christ and that as Christ s people we all belong to each other? Congregation: We will. Pastor: Then, welcome your new brother in the name of Jesus. Congregation: We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God s creative and redeeming word to all the world. 10
