LITURGY CORNER Today is the 31 st Sunday in Ordinary Time. November 25 is the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe and the last Sunday of this liturgical year. December 2 is the First Sunday of Advent and the beginning of the new liturgical year. Our new liturgical book, Word & Eucharist, now takes the place of the Missalette. In it are the Readings for all 3 liturgical cycles. We are currently in Year B and with the First Sunday of Advent will move to Year C. In our new books, the gold ribbon marks the Readings for the current Sunday (Page 684 for this week) with the Spanish on the opposite page. The maroon ribbon marks the Order of, again in both English and Spanish with some of the prayers and responses in the Latin. Also in the Order of notice the notes in red, the Rubrics. The Rubrics are instructions. Because the Sacred Paschal Triduum uses the same Readings every year and it saves space to only print it once, it can be found beginning on Page 984. These Readings include Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil. Special Feast Day Readings can be found beginning on page 1110. So if you are looking for the Readings for Our Lady of Guadalupe, you would go to the back section labeled Feasts. Take time to become familiar with our new liturgical book, but remember it is to be left in the church for others to use. And treat this book kindly, it contains the Word of God and it needs to last for many years. Thank you. Have a good week in the Lord, Gay Snell We Need Your Help! When we pray for vocations, we lift up to our Father those men and women whom He is calling to follow Him in a very special way. This is a great way to pray together as a family! If you are interested in hosting the Vocations Chalice in your home, please contact the Parish Office at 865-7385 and leave a message for Ann Krom. God is more pleased by one work, however small, done secretly and without the desire that it be known, than a thousand works done with the desire that others know of them. St. John of the Cross If we are able to enter the church day and night and implore God to hear our prayers, how careful should we be to hear and grant the petitions of our neighbor in need. LAS POSADAS WILL BE STARTING SOON! We are in need of host homes for this year s Posadas! If you have not had the opportunity to host this Advent tradition, please call the Parish Office (865-7385) to sign up and/or for more information. What a wonderful way for you and your family to experience the blessings of Advent! And, just in case you are not familiar with the traditional Posada, here is some fascinating background: December is a month in which most families and friends come together to celebrate, eat, drink, and enjoy the closing of a year. But to most Christians who celebrate the traditional Posadas, December is not only a month of communal gathering but it is also a month of spiritual religious services, singing, and candlelight walks. The actual origins of the Posadas is unclear, but scholars have, in fact, discovered that Aztecs by ancestral custom celebrated rituals in honor of Huitzilopochtli during this time of the year. The interesting thing is that, by the second half of the sixteenth century, the Augustine monks began to incorporate these ancestral rituals into the celebration of the coming of Jesus, the Savior. Furthermore, several scholars have acknowledged that Saint John of the Cross added the singing and the knocking on doors to the celebration of Christmas, thus developing the tradition of Las Posadas. Those are some historical facts about Las Posadas, but in order to get the complete taste of the festive yet spiritual posada, one needs to understand that Las Posadas are symbolic, taking the word posada literally. For instance, Las Posadas comes from the root word posada which mean, to ask for shelter. The tradition of the Posadas is based on the idea that people can have the opportunity to experience the hardships Joseph and Mary had to endure. It can also be considered a re-enactment of Mary and Joseph s arduous search for shelter. The Posadas, with the assistance of the mystic Saint John of the Cross, have retained this sixteenth century flavor in modern times. People today gather together with a particular group of friends and families for nine days, visiting each others homes; los santos peregrinos sing from the outside for shelter while innkeepers, the people inside, respond with a rejection. On the last day of the NOVENA, the community asking for Posada, finally, is able to find a family that invites them in, and the celebration begins.
