CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX NOVEMBER 25, 2012 OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE The Eucharist is a magnificent sacrament!! It can be understood in many ways like a jewel that reflects light from its different facets. The Eucharist is a covenant between ourselves and God, a remembrance, a thanksgiving, the Real Presence of Jesus among us, a great mystery of faith, and spiritual food for our pilgrimage of life here on earth. But in addition to all this, there are two other facets of the Eucharist which we all need to rediscover when we approach this great sacrament: the Eucharist is for the forgiveness of our sins and for healing. It appears to me that more than ever before we all need to experience this saving power of the Eucharist. It is intended by the Lord for our healing in order that we might be free and live as the sons and daughters of our Great God. So many in our day even we who attend Mass regularly do not recognize what a great gift of God the Eucharist really is and because of this remain in their weakness. So many in our day are sick, depressed, bound up in themselves and do not feel free or at peace. So many are overwhelmed by life. The Eucharist is given by our loving Lord as a healing sacrament and needs to be approached by us as such. In the Eucharist we can reach up and truly touch Jesus. Think of this for a brief moment!! Jesus has given us Himself in a form that we can touch. Because of our human condition, we desperately need God to reach down and touch us often. Jesus left us His Body and Blood in this great sacrament in order that we might be touched by Him and be healed. Do you know this? Can you believe this? Jesus lives among us in this sacrament. We receive the bread of life and the chalice of eternal salvation so that we might be strengthened by the Lord to avoid sin and wrong judgment and to keep on doing what is right and good. Without this spiritual food we will remain weak. To experience this healing power we of course need to approach the table of the Lord often with yielding hearts, with expectant faith, and with awe. Our hearts hunger for the Lord and approach His altar to receive Him in the Eucharist, He will truly fill us with His healing love. If we yield our very self to Him, offering no obstacles to Him, no resistance to His presence and love, He will fill us with His power that will transform our very selves. But we need to want Him with expecting hearts. Then the healing power of the Eucharist will be poured down upon us in abundance. So often we receive little because we expect so little. We need to approach the Eucharist expecting more and seeking more. Jesus so wants to heal and renew us. We need to allow Him to be our healer and our savior. We need to give Him permission to come to us and heal us. At the time of receiving the Eucharist at Mass or at the time of Benediction or Holy Hour, we should ask Jesus to work His healing power within us. During this Advent 2012, let us rethink our understanding of the Eucharist and let us approach this sacrament with a renewed spirit and commitment. ST. THERESA S GIVING TREE The Giving Tree is our parish opportunity for sharing. The tree will be located at the Altar of St. Joseph. The tree will have tags hanging on it. These gifts are collected for the needy. We ask you to remove a gift tag, purchase the item (new items only) and return it UNWRAPPED with the gift tag on it and place it under the tree. All gifts should be in by December 16 th. ST. THERESA S OUTREACH PROGRAM St. Theresa s Outreach Program is sponsoring a Toy Drive for the children of St. Joseph s School for the Deaf, the ages of the children are from Pre-K to 8 th grade. These items will be given to a homeless shelter in mid-december. Thank you and God s Blessings on you for all your help. PEASE HELP YOUR PARISH! We are most grateful to all of you who have so generously increased your weekly Sunday contribution. Please remember that this weekly increase is most needed for St. Theresa in building and improving our beloved parish. We are grateful to all of you whose generous response has enabled us to better meet our weekly expenses. However we are still far from that goal. Our neighboring parishes are receiving weekly Sunday contributions that exceed our weekly Sunday contributions by $2,000 each week! So we ask that you please continue to help us in order to keep St. Theresa such a vital, loving, growing parish. If you have not yet increased your weekly Sunday contribution, please pray about what more you can give. We really need your weekly help.
