H. Herbek Call to Worship Jeremiah 17:5 8 Leader: When we turn our hearts away from God and toward ourselves, putting trust in our own strength, People: We become like a shrub in the desert, living in Leader: a parched, salty place. When we trust in God, when our trust is God, we are like a tree planted by water. People: Our roots go deep, we are ever-green; even in a drought we are not anxious, but bear fruit, full and beautiful, gifts of the God who made us. * Hymn #482 (blue) Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty Prayer of Confession God of judgment and renewal, we admit to you and to each other that we have not always loved you and our neighbors as fully as you call us to love. We have turned away from you and toward our own self-interest. We have been shortsighted, and we are humbly sorry. Help us turn back to you, O Lord, to reach toward you as a tree sends its roots out toward water. Amen. Silent Prayers of Confession Assurance of God s Forgiveness Anthem Fill-a-Me Up P. Chopplin
Children s Sermon Presentation of Tithes and Offerings Offertory March Handel * Doxology #592 (blue) Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him all creatures here below. Praise Him above, ye heavenly hosts. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. * Prayer of Dedication Scripture Reading Jeremiah 17:5-8 Thus says the Lord: Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere flesh their strength, whose hearts turn away from the Lord. They shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when relief comes. They shall live in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit. Luke 6:17-26 He came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them. Then he looked up at his disciples and said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. New Revised Standard Version Bible, copyright 1989
Sermon Minute for Witness Blessed To Be a Blessing Marilyn Miller * Song Be Thou My Vision Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; Nought be all else to me, save that Thou art; Thou my best thought, by day and by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word; I ever with Thee, and Thou with me Lord; Thou my Great Father, and I Thy true son; Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one. Riches I heed not, nor vain empty praise, Thou mine inheritance, now and always: Thou and Thou only, the first in my heart, High King of Heaven, my treasure Thou art. High King of heaven, my victory won, May I reach heaven s joys, O bright heaven s sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my vision, O Ruler of all. * Song Shout to the Lord My Jesus, my Savior, Lord, there is none like you; All of my days, I want to praise -- The wonders of your mighty love. My comfort, my shelter, Tower of refuge and strength; Let every breath, all that I am, Never cease to worship you. Shout to the Lord, all the earth, let us sing -- Power and majesty, praise to the King; Mountains bow down and the seas will roar At the sound of your name. I sing for joy at the work of your hands, Forever I ll love you, forever I ll stand; Nothing compares To the promise I have in you. Darlene Zschech, 1993 by Hillsong ~ CCLI #1881909
Affirmation of Faith (based on Romans 5:1-5, 8) We have been justified by faith and we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Prayer of Great Thanksgiving and Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. * Hymn #379 (blue) My Hope is Built on Nothing Less * Benediction * Closing Chorus Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty (verse 3) Praise to the Lord, who will prosper your work and defend you; Surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend you. Ponder anew what the Almighty can do, If with his love he befriends you. Postlude My Peace I Leave With You Smith *If comfortably able please stand
