10:30 Service - A Bright Light: Woefully Blessed Fairfax 10:30 February 17, 2019 Sixth Sunday After Ephiphany Gathering 10:30a Gathering Song Build Your Kingdom Here 10:33a Confession and Forgiveness* Every morning, we join together in confession. We confess as part of our liturgy not as a practice of earning grace, but as a reminder of the beautiful gift that we have already received it. Please rise as you are able and join me in our prayer of confession and forgiveness. PASTOR: Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who creates us and forms us, who redeems us and calls us, who unites us and sends us. Amen. Gathered in God s presence, let us confess our sin. Mighty and loving God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We seek our own way. We divide the body of Christ. In your mercy, cleanse us and heal us. Let the words of our mouths, the thoughts of our hearts, and everything that we do be filled with faith, hope, and love. Amen. Hear the voice of Jesus: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me to proclaim release to the captives. In the name of Jesus Christ, I proclaim to you that your sins are forgiven, and you are released. The joy of the Lord is your strength, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit are yours forever. Amen.

10:34a Prayer of the Day* Assisting Minister The Lord be with you And also with you Let us pray together... Living God, in Christ you make all things new. Transform the poverty of our nature by the riches of your grace, and in the renewal of our lives make known your glory, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. 10:34:30a Sharing of the Peace* May the peace of the Lord be with you always And also with you 10:35a Welcome As a response to what you ve heard and experienced in worship, here are some ways that you can participate in what God is up to around here We invite you to support our mission in ministry by placing your tithes and offerings in the plates in the back of the sanctuary on your way out. In a few moments, we will be inviting to get to know your neighbor or a new face today with a question on the screen. We ask that you take a few minutes to welcome each other and answer the question! 10:39a Retreat Video

Word 10:39a First Reading First Reading: Jeremiah 17:5-10 Jeremiah 17:5-10 These verses compose a poem that is part of a larger collection of wisdom sayings (17:5-11) that contrast two ways of life. Life with God brings blessing; the power and vitality of God is active in our life. Life without God brings a curse, the power of death. A reading from Jeremiah. The 17th Chapter. 5 Thus says the LORD: Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere flesh their strength, whose hearts turn away from the LORD. 6 They shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when relief comes. They shall live in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. 7 Blessed are those who trust in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. 8 They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit. 9 The heart is devious above all else; it is perverse who can understand it? 10 I the LORD test the mind and search the heart, to give to all according to their ways, according to the fruit of their doings. The word of the Lord. -Thanks be to God 10:41a Gospel Music Seek Ye First

10:42:30a Gospel Reading* Gospel: Luke 6:17-26 Luke 6:17-26 After choosing his twelve apostles, Jesus teaches a crowd of followers about the nature and demands of discipleship. He begins his great sermon with surprising statements about who is truly blessed in the eyes of God. 17 [Jesus] came down with [the twelve] and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. 18 They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them. 20 Then he looked up at his disciples and said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. 24 But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. 25 Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 10:44:30a Message A Bright Light - Woefully Blessed 11:02:30a Song of Praise* Glory To The Lord Our God

11:05:30a Apostles Creed* Everything we do around this table is for all people because this is Jesus table. Even confessing the creed whether we believe it fully today or not, we say it together as an authentic community. With this in mind, we changed the word catholic to universal, this shift in language helps all of us, new and old to better understand the original meaning of the creed. So, let all of us big in faith and small in faith, new to church or raised in the church, join together in saying the Apostles Creed. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen 11:06:30a Prayer Music Come Thou Fount

11:06:30a Prayers of the People Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus according to their needs After each portion of the prayers: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. The prayers conclude: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 11:11:30a Children's Message 11:14:30a THANKSGIVING 11:14:30a Offering We respond to God's generosity with generosity of our own with our gifts and tithes this morning. 11:18:30a Special Music Just A Closer Walk With Thee 11:18:30a Offering Prayer* Holy God, your beauty shines forth from the manger and your love flows from the cross. As you gather us around these signs of your love come among us, warm us to extend your care among the hungry and all in need. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. 11:19a The Great Thanksgiving* The Lord be with you! And also with you! Lift up your hearts! We lift them to the Lord! Let us give thanks to the Lord our God! It is right to give our thanks and praise!

11:20a The Preface* Pastor: See, God s home is among us. God will dwell with us as our God. We will be God s people, and God will be present to us! People: God will wipe every tear from our eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away! Pastor: People: Christ has died! Christ IS risen! Christ will come again! 11:21a The Words of Institution* 11:22a Lord's Prayer* Grab the hand or shoulder of the person next to you as we join in saying the Lord's prayer. We will be using a translation that is closer to the actual words that Jesus taught. So together let s join in praying Our Father in heaven, Holy is your name, your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

11:22:30a Invitation & Distribution (The congregation may be seated) This table is for all people. It's not a Lutheran table or a Lord of Life table but it s God s table. No matter who you are or how you are, whether you are big in faith or small in faith all are welcome to take part in this feast together. God fills the hungry with good things. Taste and see that the Lord is good. [Explanation of how to take communion] 11:22:30a Communion Songs Cornerstone 11:22:30a Post Communion Text* *May the body and blood of Jesus strengthen you and keep you in his grace. Amen

Sending 11:23a Benediction May the path that Christ walks to bring justice upon the earth, to bring light to those who sit in darkness, to bring out those who live in bondage, to bring new things to all creation: may this path run through our life. May we be the road Christ takes. AMEN. 11:23:30a Sending Song Trading My Sorrows 11:23:30a Dismissal Assisting Minister ASSISTING MINISTER: Go in peace. Christ is your light. All: Thanks be to God. 11:24a Postlude 11:24a
