U P G R A D E D! P E N T E C O S T X V 27& 28 A U G U S T 2016 AS WE GATHER We like to think of ourselves as worthy of honor and respect. We would like to live as deserving of first-class treatment. But Jesus encourages us to live humbly among people around us. Not only does He instruct us to humbly find the lowest seat, but when we do the inviting He also cautions against expecting social payback. By ourselves we would chafe under such limits, but our faith in the grace of God, coming to us through the sacrifice of Christ s blood on our behalf, moves us to rely on His undeserved favor. That frees us to hear those directives as descriptions of the sort of living by which we may return praise and honor to our Savior life in first class, indeed! PREPARATION HYMN GOD HIMSELF IS PRESENT LSB 907 INVOCATION P=Presider; C=Congregation P In the name of the Father C who called us into being in this time and place; P and of the Son C whose sacrifice for us has sanctified us to be His own; P and of the Holy Spirit C whose gift of faith has freed us to walk humbly before the Lord. Amen. CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS P We confess our sins to God and in the presence of one another: SILENCE FOR REFLECTION ON GOD S WORD AND FOR SELF-EXAMINATION 1

P When Jesus entered the house of the Pharisee and saw the man with dropsy who was left there as a trap, He saw a man who needed healing. C We confess that in our pride we sometimes ignore the needs of others, we neglect to show hospitality to strangers, we forget those who are in prison, and we turn a blind eye to those who are mistreated. Forgive us, heavenly Father, and teach us by Your Holy Spirit to follow the example of Your Son in true humility. P In Jesus parable He chided His hearers about their seeking places of honor. C We confess that in our self-centeredness we sometimes consider ourselves worthy of honor, even while allowing personal desires to come between us and our Lord. Forgive us, heavenly Father, and teach us by Your Holy Spirit to follow, in true humility, the example of Your Son. P Jesus warned against doing anything for others in expectation of being repaid. C We confess that in our fallen human nature we sometimes forget that, because of our Savior s sacrifice for us, the resurrection awaits us. We are free to love our neighbors as ourselves, relying on God s grace for all we need. Forgive us, heavenly Father, and teach us by Your Holy Spirit to follow, in true humility, the example of Your Son. P Jesus suffered in order to sanctify us through His own blood. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God. Amen. WORD PSALM 131 P O Lord, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; C I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me. P But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me. C O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forevermore! 2

KYRIE LORD, HAVE MERCY LSB 186 C Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. GLORIA IN EXCELSIS GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST LUKE 2:14 JOHN 1:29 LSB 187 P Glory be to God on high: C and on earth peace, goodwill toward men. We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee, we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee for Thy great glory. O Lord God, heav nly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord. Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. PRAYER OF THE DAY P O Lord of grace and mercy, teach us by Your Holy Spirit to follow the example of Your Son in true humility. C May we withstand the temptations of the devil and with pure hearts and minds avoid ungodly pride through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Alleluia, amen! PLEASE BE SEATED 3

ANTHEM OUR HERO 1 ST 8 TH -GRADE STUDENTS OF ST. MARK S LUTHERAN SCHOOL (Sunday) OLD TESTAMENT PROVERBS 25:2-10 DO NOT THINK OF YOURSELF MORE HIGHLY THAN ANYONE ELSE 2 It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out. 3 As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth, so the heart of kings is unsearchable. 4 Take away the dross from the silver, and the smith has material for a vessel; 5 take away the wicked from the presence of the king, and his throne will be established in righteousness. 6 Do not put yourself forward in the king s presence or stand in the place of the great, 7 for it is better to be told Come up here than to be put lower in the presence of a noble. What your eyes have seen 8 do not hastily bring into court, for what will you do in the end, when your neighbor puts you to shame? 9 Argue your case with your neighbor himself, and do not reveal another s secret, 10 lest he who hears you bring shame upon you, and your ill repute have no end. P This is the Word of our Lord. C Thanks be to God! GRADUAL PSALM 34:9&19 P Fear the LORD, you His saints, C for those who fear Him lack nothing! P Many are the afflictions of the righteous, C but the Lord delivers them out of them all. 4

EPISTLE HEBREWS 13:1-17 LIVING THE SANCTIFIED LIFE FOR WHICH CHRIST PAID WITH HIS LIFE 1 Let brotherly love continue. 2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. 3 Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body. 4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. 5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said I will never leave you nor forsake you. 6 So we can confidently say The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me? 7 Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 9 Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them. 10 We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. 11 For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. 12 So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. 13 Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured. 14 For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. 15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. 16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. 17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you. P This is the Word of our Lord. C Thanks be to God! ALLELUIA PRAISE GOD LSB 190 PLEASE STAND C Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. 5

HOLY GOSPEL LUKE 14:1-14 JESUS TEACHES TRUE HUMILITY P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 14 th chapter. C (LSB 190) Glory to be to Thee, O Lord. 1 One Sabbath when [Jesus] went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching him carefully. 2 And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy. 3 And Jesus responded to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not? 4 But they remained silent. Then he took him and healed him and sent him away. 5 And he said to them, Which of you, having a son or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out? 6 And they could not reply to these things. 7 Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, 8 When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, 9 and he who invited you both will come and say to you, Give your place to this person, and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, Friend, move up higher. Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. 12 He said also to the man who had invited him, When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. 13 But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, 14 and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just. P This is the Gospel of our Lord. C (LSB 191) Praise be to Thee, O Christ! PLEASE BE SEATED HYMN SON OF GOD, ETERNAL SAVIOR LSB 842 6

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P Let us pray for ourselves and the Church around the world, for our nation and the nations around the globe. C Let us pray for all people, both those dear and those unknown to us, in their various needs. SILENCE FOR PERSONAL PRAYER P Holy Spirit, move us to connect our faith with our actions, providing hospitality to strangers, visiting those in prison, speaking up for those who are mistreated, upholding the marital estate, and rejecting immorality in its various forms. C Strengthen us to be content with what we have, living each day in thanks for Your many gifts. Help us to follow the example of our Savior in His humility and love. SPECIAL PETITIONS & PRAISES P Into Your hands, heavenly Father, we commend all for whom we pray, C trusting in Your mercy for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. 7

APOSTLES CREED (Sunday) C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Christian: the ancient text reads catholic, meaning the whole Church as it confesses the wholeness of Christian doctrine. SUNDAY WORSHIP CONTINUES ON PAGE 11 WITH THE LORD S PRAYER 8

NICENE CREED (Saturday) C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Us means all people. Christian: the ancient text reads catholic, meaning the whole Church as it confesses the wholeness of Christian doctrine. 9

SACRAMENT The Lord s Supper is celebrated at this congregation in the confession and glad confidence that, as He says, our Lord gives into our mouths not only bread and wine but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He forgives and loves us, that they may show forth His death until He comes. Because those who eat and drink our Lord s body and blood unworthily do so to their great harm and because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked first to speak with our pastor or an elder. Alcoholremoved white wine is offered in the center of the tray. For further study, see Matthew 5:23f.; 10:32f.; 18:15-35; 26:26-29; 1 Corinthians 11:17-34. P Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God. ~Psalm 136 C It is meet and right so to do. PROPER PREFACE P It is truly good and right, our duty and our delight, to praise You, Lord, at all times and in all places, giving thanks through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, C who in word and deed was obedient to Your will, humbly offering Himself as a sacrifice that we might be Your sanctified people. P Therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: SANCTUS HOLY, HOLY, HOLY ISAIAH 6:3 MATTHEW 21:9 LSB 195 C Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth; heav n and earth are full of Thy glory. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Blesséd is He, blesséd is He, blesséd is He that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. Sabaoth (SAH-bay-oath) is Hebrew for heavenly hosts. Hosanna is a Hebrew word of praise meaning save us now. 10

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING P Through Your prophets and apostles You have revealed Your will to us. C In the fullness of time You redeemed us, fallen creatures that we are. P You kept Your promises by sending Your Son, who was humble and obedient in our place, even sacrificing Himself outside the walls of Jerusalem so that we might be Your sanctified people. C Trusting in Your grace for His sake, we look forward to the joys of heaven. P We give You thanks for the redemption You have prepared for us through Jesus Christ.
