A Replica of the Lenten Cross will be placed in the front of the Church near the Altar during Lent. The original was created about 1600A.D., and is actually an extension of the Advent wreath and the Christmas tree. As the Christmas season ended, Catholics in northern Europe found themselves facing the continuing bleakness of winter. So they saved a piece of the tree s trunk to help them remember God s promise of Eternal Life. Historically, on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, the people would split a tree trunk in half and fashion a cross. Then they drilled six holes into the wood and inserted six candles, similar to the Advent wreath. The first candle with lit on Ash Wednesday and again o the first Sunday of Lent. The remaining candles were lit the following five Sundays. The first candle is black. Lit on Ash Wednesday, the black candle reminds worshippers of their own mortality and sin. The four purple candles are lit on the first, second, third and fifth Sundays, inviting the faithful to go to confession and do penance. The rose candle is lit on the fourth Sunday of Lent, also called Laetare or Joy. It reminds people their Lenten penance is almost over and Easter is near. The red candle is the last to be lit on Palm Sunday. ****Protecting Gods Children Class**** Holy Rosary Parish is offer ing a Pr otecting God s Children Class from 7-10pm.
