GO TO GOD FIRST 1 Peter 5. 5-11 (Courageous Christianity Series) 1 PET 5.5b All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble. 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen. Intro Illus- Teenage Girls An interesting thing happened recently to a couple of teenage girls from Colorado. Instead of going to a party where there might be drinking, drugs and other inappropriate behavior, they decided to stay home and make cookies for their neighbors. They dressed the cookies with little pink hearts and wrote a note that said, Have a great night. Then they rang the doorbell of each home and left the cookies on the doorstep. Ques- Sounds like your basic, run-of-the-mill good deed, doesn t it? Well, one of the neighbors didn t appreciate their thoughtfulness. She later filed a lawsuit against the girls, claiming that the unsolicited cookies triggered an anxiety attack that forced her to go to the hospital. Amazingly, the judge ordered the girls to pay over $900 in medical bills and court costs. That was more than $450 a piece- probably a month s pay or a typical teenage with a part-time job. Ques- Can you believe that one simple act of kindness could backfire in such a way? Ques- Maybe you have had the same thing happen to you? Something good backfires Your life takes an unexpected turn Something happens- that wasn t supposed to happen- even if they aren t your fault Illus- Licking Envelopes I used to work for the state. One of the benefits is I am a member of the State Employee s Credit Union. A pretty good deal. Now, for years I ve been a member of the Credit Union, and for years I ve been making deposits at the counter, or through the ATM machine. Nothing new about that- all of us do that Except for one little thing I never knew about When you put your card in the ATM machine- and you want to make a deposit- the machine asks you if you need an envelope. So what I do is I press Yes I fill out the envelop, put the money or check inside, lick the envelope, hit all the right keys- and presto, the deposit gives me a receipt in return Now, I have been doing this for maybe 15 years, and then on one Saturday I had a friend in the car. They see me going through this routine, and as I lick the envelope they say, You know, you don t have to do that. 1

So I said, Do what? 2 And they said, You don t have to lick that envelope. Now, I am thinking, What do they know about a Credit Union? I have been a member for over 15 years, and I know what I am doing. So I said, No, that s not right. You can t do that. You can t be putting money in an envelope and not lick it. It won t stay closed, and I am not gonna put this much money in the ATM without sealing it shut. Ques- And what does my friend say? They say, All right, just try it. I did, and they were right For over 15 years I have been licking these dirty envelopes when all I had to do was fold it over! Ques- Who knows, maybe I ll get cancer and die because of envelope licking for 15 years? Here is the point: There are a few certainties in life, but it is also absolutely inevitable, unavoidable, and inescapable- sooner or later, you will face some really big problems- and it could be something you have even now Health problems Money Job Family Marriage You name it- you will be forced to face it Jesus knew this of course, and that is why he said, MT 11.28 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. 1. Jesus Came Because God Knew We Could Not Solve All Of Our Problems Some things can only be solved by God For example, consider salvation- you can t solve it And while there are some things we can solve- and should- some of them can be too big for us We need a God of second chances to allow us to start all over again 2. Other Problems We Must Solve- Because God Insists On It Illus- Parents Parents are good for this. They tell us Don t play out in the street Don t take candy from a stranger Don t get in a car with someone you don t know We have heard these things from parents- maybe we have said it- for if there is one thing parents are good at, it s telling kids what to do But once we reach the age of accountability, God still insists on certain duties and obligations

If you made a commitment to God- he can hold you to it If you have mistreated someone If there is a special task for you Or an assignment designed for you 3 Illus- Shingles A man walked into a doctor's office. "What do you have?" the receptionist asked. "Shingles," he replied. She told him to sit down. Soon a nurse called him and asked, "What do you have?" "Shingles," he replied. She took his blood pressure, weight, and complete medical history. Then she took him to a room and told him to remove all of his clothes. After a few minutes the doctor came in and asked, "What do you have?" "Shingles," the man told him. The doctor looked him up and down and said, "Where?" "Out on the truck. Where do you want me to unload them?" 3. There Are Problems We Think We Have Solved- Only To Realize We Made Them Worse Illus- Shredding Machine There was this young executive who was leaving the office for the day when he found his boss standing in front of a paper shredder with what appeared to be an important document in his hand. "Listen," said the boss said, "this is important, and my secretary has already left for the day. Do you know how to make this thing work?" So the young business man said, "Sure, I can help you with that." And that is what he does: He turns on the machine, inserts the document into the shredding machine, and then he presses the start button. The boss was relieved. And as his only copy vanishes into the shredder, he says, "Excellent, thank you very much! Just make me one copy." Life is hard enough without screwing it up And many things we can get by But issues regarding morality, spirituality, or how we have treated another God can- and often will- hold us to account Ques- Do you remember what Jesus said? MT 25.40 Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. Knowing this, that means you should do the following I. GO TO GOD FIRST- AND LET HIM WORK THROUGH YOU (vs. 6) 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Ques- If you had your choice- and you have a problem that s troubling you- can you think of a better thing to do?

But many won t go to God first- they go to God last And it is only after they have completely wiped themselves out with worry Stressed out physically, can t sleep, getting sick- that they go to God Complaining to anyone who will listen to them 4 1. God Is Ideally Suited To Handle Anything- But When We Go To Him We Must Approach Him- Respectfully, Humbly, And Submit Fully This is a no-brainer, but pride steps in the way Illus- Lame Jokes Joke #1 A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store but couldn't find one big enough for her family. She asked a stock boy a question, Do these turkeys get any bigger?" The stock boy replied, "No ma'am, they're dead." Joke #2 A cop gets out of his car- having caught a kid speeding. The kid rolls down the window, and the cop said, "I've been waiting for you all day!" The kid replied, "Yeah, well I got here as fast as I could." Jokes #3 A truck driver was driving along on the freeway. A sign comes up that reads "LOW BRIDGE AHEAD." Before he knows it the bridge is right ahead of him and he gets stuck under the bridge. Cars are backed up for miles. Finally, a police car comes up. The cop gets out of his car and walks around to the truck driver, puts his hands on his hips and says, "Got stuck, huh?" The truck driver says, "No, I was delivering this bridge and ran out of gas." God gave us brains to use, and he expects us to use them- but that doesn t mean we can handle all things at all times in the best way We can t even explain How a Brown cow Eats green grass Gives white milk That s churned into yellow butter 2. If We Go To God First- Submitting Fully- Then You Honor Him- And He Will Turn And Honor You As Paul says, 1 PET 5.6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. God will honor you if you will honor him But if you won t- he won t Illus- What It Means To Be Humble

5 Here are three characteristics of what it means to be humble 1. Giving respect- not out of currying favor- but in honesty and sincerity 2. Being willing to do good- without demanding the credit 3. Being able to rejoice when someone else is successful Conversely, here is what you will see in those who have a pride problem When they are wrong- they won t make it right When they are right- they want full credit When they owe an apology- they cannot say I am sorry But if you hear what Peter says- it is humility first- exaltation later And sometimes God will test us in this II. IF WE GO TO GOD FIRST- HE WILL TAKE CARE OF THE REST (vs. 7) 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. There are really few good deals in this world- but this is certainly one of them But we have to get this straight 1. God Knows What We Need- And That Is A Better Thing To Have- Than What We Want Illus- What Problem Do You Really Have? Needs and wants too often get confused- many cannot separate the two 80% of the world lives on less than $10 day 22,000 children die each day due to poverty Nearly a billion people entered the 21 st century unable to read a book or sign their names There are 2.2 billion children in the world- 1 billion of them live in poverty 25% of the world s population live without electricity (1.6 billion) We spend 780 billion around the world for military spending But only 6 billion for basic education And 9 billion for water and sanitation In Europe alone, they spend 8 billion = cosmetics 11 billion ice cream 105 billion- alcoholic beverages Ques- Compared to those figures- what problems do we really have? The truth is- the most serious problems in the world are not things you can buy The biggest problem in the world is how few people are saved Illus- Pew Forum on Religion In 1910- there were 1.8 billion people in the world- 35% of them were Christians In 2010- there were 6.9 billion people in the world- 32% of them were Christians That means we are not only decreasing in percentages- it also means that 68% of the world are not Christians at all

2. This Raises A Troubling Problem- How Can You Cast Your Cares On A God You Don t Know? 6 Peter says this, 1 PET 5.7 Cast all your anxiety on him Ques- How well do we know him- if we don t worship him? How well do we know him- if we don t serve him? How well do we know him- if we don t pray to him? How well do we know him- if we don t obey him? Ques- How can you cast your cares upon him, if you are not willing to get to know him? You cannot cast your cares on a God you don t know III. WE MUST GO TO GOD FIRST- FOR ALL OF US NEED A SECOND CHANCE (vs. 10) 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen. There are always lessons to be learned in life And even if we do have problems that are overwhelming 1. God Is Good- All The Time Illus- Marathons Maybe you ve seen these marathon runners These people run over 26 miles And they can t even see the goal line Ques- Have you ever ran a race where you couldn t see the goal? Did you ever do anything where you couldn t see the goal? I can t tell you how many times I have gotten lost on a golf course because I could not find the tee for the next hole! Ques- But if I had played at that course many times before- wouldn t I know? When you have an insurmountable problem- you need help because your vision is not God s vision The outcome is outside your vision But what some people do is complain or worry But there are better things to do God has an end in mind for all that he will do Conclusion To be so intent on making a living at the expense of designing our lives in Christ is a fool s errand That s why the best thing to do is to put ourselves in God s hand All we gotta do is go to God first- and he will take care of the rest End of Sermon Prayer June 24, 2018 Fort Barnwell Baptist Church Fort Barnwell, NC 28526
