rd 3 5 June 13-14, 2015 Genesis 2; Philippians 4:6 Connect Time (20 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. th God Made People We are designed in God s image. Even though Move Up Weekend was last weekend, some kids may be in the room for the first time. Look for kids who seem tentative or as if they aren t sure who to talk to or what to do. Ask them to play a game with you or introduce them to a new friend. Small Group (10 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. Kids are taking home air-drying clay. Tell parents that it will take a few hours to dry, but it should become a lovely permanent sculpture. Today is about how God designed people in his own image. The goal is that kids understand they are made uniquely and purposefully.
GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. WHO AM I? *Break kids into small groups. Keep the stickers hidden from the kids while you put one on each kid s back. Kids can look at one another s stickers, but may NOT look at their own. To figure out their sticker, they have to ask yes and no questions. (That means kids can also only answer with yes or no. No hints!) Examples include: o Am I a girl? o Am I a pretend character? o Am I a kid? o Etc. As you play, ask kids if they need help figuring out any of the stickers. If so, whisper the names to them so everybody can play no matter their reading skills. (And if you re not sure who somebody is, ask another kid to help you!) Once kids figure it out (you can give hints if you need to), debrief: o How did you figure out your person? o What would it be like if we were all exactly the same? o What s one way you re different than everybody else? Before you go to Large Group, ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.
Goal: Kids will (1) understand that God designed humans to by loved by him and to love him and (2) make that personal by recognizing that they and everyone around them is special. Why? Believing that people are created in God s image impacts the way we treat them (and ourselves). Hopefully, this will lay a foundation for kids to grasp that. Tip: Share ways that God has designed you, too. It s good for kids to learn how God wants us to treat ourselves. REVIEW THE STORY 1. How did God create people? (can include breathing into clay and also that he made us like him) 2. Think of the nicest person you know. Is it hard to believe they are made in God s image and special to God? 3. Think of the meanest person you know. Is it hard to believe they are made in God s image and special to God? 4. How would we treat people if we believed they were made in God s image? 5. Why did God make us in his image? (he wants us to be close to him, to be loved by him and love him back) ACTIVITY: DESIGNED BY GOD Give each kid a post-it. Then say: Everybody think of ONE special way God designed you. Write one word to describe it on your post-it. Share post-its. Give each kid a pack of air-drying clay. Create something to remind you of that design! (If kids have a hard time, they could create a heart of some similar design to remind them that are special to God and were created to love him. Tell them this is air-drying clay but they will have to let it sit for a few hours at home to dry.) Describe what you created. *Pray together, thanking God that he made us in his image and designed us uniquely. Extra Time? Review the verse! See if you can make up hand motions. Or play the game from Large Group again by standing in a circle, calling out different traits or activities, and having everyone high five if that thing is true about them.

1 There are three videos today. Make sure to stick to the script so you have time for everything. *There is a variation offered for the game near the end of Large Group. Choose how you want to play it based on your room and your kids. As always, if you want to preview the videos, click on the links on the prep page (last page of the lesson). *Click to play intro music Hi everybody. Welcome to Kids Club! It s great to see you in (age group) again. Your Connect Time game looked really fun. Who got to be someone really awesome? (Let kids respond.) Who had to be somebody that you did NOT want to be or maybe didn t even know? (Let kids respond.) No matter who you were, how did you figure it out? (Let a kid explain.) Yeah, you started asking questions. And since people are all different, you were able to figure it out. SPIN ART EXPERIMENT I think we all know that people are different and the world would be pretty boring if we were the same. But today we are going to think about WHY we are all different. I mean, we re all people. We all have skin and a beating heart. And we were all made by God in a very special way. But before we talk about that, we re going to watch a science experiment. In this experiment, a guy is spinning a bunch of coffee filters with glue and water to see black marker turn into many colors. As you watch, see if you can figure out if this guy knows how his designs will turn out. Video: Spin Art (Click to show all four side by side.) Wow, take a look at those! Do you think the guy who made these knew what they would look like? (Let kids say: No.) Probably not. He had an idea, but each of these ended up different even though he did the same thing. In fact, does anybody know what an experiment is? (Let kids respond.) Yep, it s a test you do to see if something is true or to find out what will happen.
A CAREFUL DESIGN Let me show you another creation that was a little bit different. (Click to show painting of starry night.) This was painted by a famous artist named Vincent Van Gogh. Do you think he liked this painting? (Let kids say: Yes.) He sure did! He took his time and he painted something that he knew very well, a scene from a window that he looked out of often. He knew what he was making and he made it just the way he wanted. Did you guys know that YOU are like that painting? YOU were carefully designed by God. None of us were just spun randomly into place like those coffee filters. God gave each of us different talents and skills on purpose. He made us short and tall, with straight hair and curly hair, and in all different shades of colors. And he loves us like that! HOW WE WERE MADE Guess what? We were even made differently than the rest of the world. We ve talked about how the earth was black and God started with nothing. Then, he made light and day and night and sky and sea and land and plants and animals and everything all out of nothing. But all that was going to be a home for his masterpiece, humans. We re going to watch a video that shows us that idea. There are some things that are just for fun in this video. But as you watch, see if you can figure out HOW God created humans and how he feels about us. Video: Creating the World Wow, so how did God make us? (Let kids respond.) Yep, he took some clay or maybe some dirt and he actually breathed life into it (breath loudly into the microphone). It became Adam. And when Adam was done, what did God call him in the video? (Let kids say: perfect!). That s right, perfect. God had made an amazing home and then made his favorite creation, people, to love him and be loved by him. WHY WE ARE SPECIAL In the Bible, we find out WHY humans are extra special. The book of Genesis tells us this: SLIDE: Genesis 1:27 So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. So why are we extra special? (Let kids respond.) Yes, we are made in God s image. We don t know exactly what that means. I mean, look around at how different we are! (Pause.) And of course we all have different personalities and talents, too. But we DO know God put so much careful work into us and he loves each of us a LOT. All he wants is for us to love him and trust him and follow him. He wants to be close to us, like a friend. Remember our verse from Philippians 4:6: SLIDE: Philippians 4:6: Don t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Let s read that out loud together (let kids read). Great job!
HAVE YOU EVER? GAME Now let s play a little game to see how God made us, even in this room. It s called Have You Ever? I m going to yell out something. If you HAVE done it, find one other person who HAS done it and give them a high five. You guys will have to get your hands ready if you HAVE done these things. Ready? Stand up! (Let kids stand. Read the following items and let kids high five each other. If it s possible in your room, you could also have your group make one huge circle. Everybody who answers yes to your question runs to the middle to high five each other.) Have you ever sung karaoke? Have you ever had a brother? Have you ever broken a bone in your body? Have you ever been an only child? Have you ever eaten frog s legs? Great job, everybody! Now have a seat (let kids sit). RESPOND It s fun to think about how we re different. But look around the room (look around). Every single person boy, girl, short, tall, quiet, energetic was each made in God s image. So I want you to talk to God about how he made you. Because YOU are made in his image. All the things you like and don t like were designed by him. And even though none of us can act perfectly, which we ll talk more about another time, we were all made perfectly by God. As we watch this next video, ask God to tell you more about how he made you. Context: Every Voice Matters WORSHIP Now let s worship God together! Let s thank him for who we are and let s declare that HE is the one who gives us life. Music Video: Who I Am Music Video: Alive PRAY Ask somebody to come and thank God for designing us perfectly.
