March 24, 2019 MESSAGE FROM THE REC TOR T he Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord celebrates the mystery of the Incarnation and at the same time the vocation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was her faithful response to the angel s message that began the work of Redemption. Pope St John Paul II said we give thanks to God through His Mother, because Mary, as God s collaborator in giving human nature to His eternal Son, was the instrument that linked Jesus with the whole of humanity. Fr. Fernandez in his book In Conversation with Christ (P. 177) points out that from the moment Mary said Yes to the angel, Jesus, the Only begotten Son of the Father became fully human like us. And He would remain a human person forever. Fr. Fernandez writes: The Incarnation was not a temporary condition Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, would be perfect God and perfect man for all eternity. The Vatican II document Gaudium et Spes speaks of the significance of the Incarnation: For by His Incarnation, the Son of God has united Himself in some fashion with every person. He worked with human hands, He thought with a human mind, acted by human choice, and loved with a human heart. Born of the Virgin Mary, He has truly been made one of us, like us in all things but sin. (N. 22) III Sunday in Lent In his first Encyclical letter Redemptor Hominis Pope St. John Paul II states Christ the Redeemer fully reveals man to himself. (n. 11) Fr. Fernandez comments that it is only through Christ that we will come to comprehend our inner self and everything that matters most to us: the hidden value of pain and of work well done, the authentic peace and joy which surpass natural feelings and life s uncertainties... P. 179 Regarding the vocation of the Blessed Virgin Mary... Fr. Fernandez writes in P. 185 vocation is not the choice we make for ourselves so much as that which God makes for us through the thousand and one events in which we are involved. We need to know how to interpret these circumstances with faith, and with a heart that is at once pure and upright. Think about the words of Jesus You did not choose me but I chose you John 15, 16 We can be sure that it will please God very much if we thank Him today for the many times He has given us light by which to see the path along which He is calling us. We should thank Him for His most Holy Mother who corresponded so faithfully to what God asked of her. - Fr. Galvon T H E A N G E L U S V. The Angel of the Lord declared to Mary: R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary, full of grace... V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord: R. Be it done unto me according to Thy word. Hail Mary, full of grace... V. And the Word was made Flesh: R. And dwelt among us. Hail Mary, full of grace... V. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray: P our forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection, through the same Christ Our Lord. R. Amen. 3

March 24, 2019 S U N D A Y M A S S III SUNDAY IN LENT MASS READINGS First Reading Exodus 3, 1-8a, 13-15 Moses, you will tell the children of Israel: I AM has sent me to you. Responsorial Psalm 103 R. The Lord is merciful and gracious. Second Reading I Corinthians 10, 1-6, 10-12 Our ancestor s experience in the desert under Moses is recorded to instruct us. Gospel Luke 13, 1-9 Unless you turn back to God, you will perish as they did. Mass Reflection I have witnessed the affliction of my people. (Exodus 3:7) n Ash Wednesday, we began Lent with the age-old call O to repentance: Return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning (Joel 2:12). That theme continues in today s second reading and Gospel. But the first reading is something different. It s not about our need to repent; it s about God s free, overflowing mercy. For the children of Abraham, God s mercy came in the form of release from slavery in Egypt. For us, that mercy comes in the form of release from slavery to sin. God showed mercy and grace to the Israelites, not because they were perfect, but because they were his people and he cared for them. Likewise, he shows mercy to us because we are his children, and he doesn t want to see us bound in sin. Exodus was just the beginning too. From age to age, God has shown himself to be merciful toward his people. He told Moses that this is how he should always be remembered: The Lord, the Lord, a God gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in love and fidelity (Exodus 34:6). Other prophets then continued the teaching, always referring to God as gracious and merciful (Joel 2:13; Jonah 4:2). Even the psalms praise God s mercy repeatedly. When Jesus came, he focused his ministry on the mercy and graciousness of his heavenly Father as well (Matthew 5:7; Luke 6:36; 10:37). But even more important, he showed himself to be the very mercy of God. He refused to condemn a woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11). He welcomed tax collectors and sinners as disciples (Luke 15:1-2). And best of all, he promised the thief on the cross, Today you will be with me in Paradise (23:43). It s no wonder that one of the most common sentences Jesus heard while he was on earth was Have mercy on me! It s a prayer he cannot help but answer! Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy.
