Getting to know our new members sharing stories in small groups Dean Price invited the vestry to break into small groups so that new vestry members and senior and junior vestry members could spend time getting to know each other by sharing, for example, when they came to the Cathedral, what brought them here, what ministries they are involved in, and when they have felt closest to Christ during their time at the Cathedral. Non-vestry members left the room during this time. Senior Warden Report Senior Warden David Pinson welcomed each of the new vestry members: Janis Adams, Kenny Rogers, Nancy Sanford, and Ashton Tassin. After vestry discussion, Kenny Rogers moved that the vestry approve the distribution of the Endowment Fund s $10,000 contribution as an outright gift to the Cathedral. David Pinson seconded. The motion carried. After the conclusion of the meeting, vestry members Adele Ichilian, Jerry Tuhy, Phil Dunnet, Michael Bradley, and Tim Mack also consented to the foregoing action, providing, in accordance with the Articles of Incorporation of Saint Matthew s Cathedral Endowment Fund, Inc. ( Fund ) the required 75% vote of the vestry, acting as the members of the fund, for any distribution of the principal of the assets of the Fund. Vestry Covenant David Pinson distributed to the new vestry members a document entitled Vestry Expectations and Covenant (see attachment), explaining that it sets forth what it means to be a member of the vestry. David asked the new vestry members to read and sign the document and to turn it in to the Clerk. Bishop Stanton s Book David Pinson reported that about two months ago the Vestry gave Bishop Stanton authorization to use a photo of one of the Cathedral s stainedglass windows on the cover of his new book. David showed the vestry a copy of the book, Women of Faith, saying the Bishop had wanted the vestry to see the finished work. Cathedral Pride Day In the absence of Adele Ichilian, David Pinson reported that Adele would like to schedule Cathedral Pride Day for Saturday, April 6 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for the spring cleanup of the Cathedral and the Cathedral grounds. David said Adele is looking into a couple of expenditures, including having the monument sign in the Ross Avenue parking lot either replaced or revamped because it is only partially lit at this time. He said Adele also advises it is time to schedule Moses Mechanical to perform spring preventative maintenance on the HVAC system. Finance Committee Report Janet Page Elsea reported that the Finance Committee recently decided that it will meet once a month to keep on top of Cathedral finances. Janet said the members of the Finance Committee are Tim Mack, chair, David Pinson, Adele Ichilian, and herself for the vestry, and Bob Jones, as Treasurer. 3
Janet said they met yesterday with Nina Sanders and went over the financial statements and variance report. Janet reviewed and discussed the variance report at length and, along with Bob Jones, responded to questions from the vestry. Item Creation of a flex space for hospitality in the back of the Nave (field trip) Dean Price reported that at last month s vestry meeting, he discussed the idea of creating a flex space for hospitality in the back of the Nave. Dean Price said this discussion item is now ready for decision. The Dean led the vestry on a field trip to the back of the Nave where he and the vestry discussed at length how the space could be utilized as a hospitality area to greet newcomers after the 10:30 service. Dean Price said this would include the removal of pews to create a flexible space (see attached diagram), and would also include creating a Welcome Ministry of teams of parishioners to greet newcomers. Janet Page moved that the vestry approve the removal of pews in the back of the Nave in order to create a flexible space. Nancy Sanford seconded. After vestry discussion, the motion carried. Discussion Items: 1. Handrail at chancel steps 2. Signage 3. Parking lot striping and fixing of most obnoxious potholes 4. Audiovisual system improvement 1. Handrail at chancel steps Dean Price and the vestry walked to the foot of the chancel steps. The Dean said it was brought to his attention that there is a need for some of the Cathedral s parishioners to have a rail to hold onto as they go up and down the chancel steps. Dean Price said he doesn t have anything specific to propose at this time but he wanted to signal the vestry that this is something that is being discussed. He said the Cathedral wants to enable folks to safely approach the altar to make their communion. 2. Signage Dean Price discussed the need for improved signage. He said, for example, a sign letting people know which door to use to enter the Great Hall; a sign pointing to where the worship area is; and parking lot signs indicating where guests can park, especially on Sundays. 3. Parking lot restriping and fixing of most obnoxious potholes 4
The Dean said rather than wait for the City of Dallas to repave the potholes, the Cathedral could patch them with asphalt, and that the parking lot could be restriped rather than painted. 4. Audiovisual system improvement Dean Price said that Father Ryan has been charged with contacting the person who installed the Cathedral s sound system and determining how best to upgrade the system. Motion to Adjourn and Closing Prayer There being no further business, Kenny Rogers moved to adjourn the meeting. Ashton Tassin seconded. Dean Price led the Vestry in closing the meeting with the Lord s Prayer. Respectfully submitted, Eileen Smith Clerk 5
