PRAISE FOR PASSION & PERSISTENCE I believe this book will be remembered as one of the most important ever written about a cell church movement! I experienced the passion when visiting Elim many years ago. As described by Joel Comiskey, Elim s passion is more than an atmosphere: it is perfume! Their cells exude a sweet smell, a sacrifice pleasing to God. (Philippians 4:18) Their Basic Christian Communities are filled with the presence and power of Christ. That is why they have multiplied not only in one culture but in many, spreading the aroma around the world. Best of all, this report about Elim is not a pattern to be slavishly copied. It is a journey into grasping the true theology and methodology of the New Testament church. Dr. Ralph Neighbour, Jr. Author of Where Do We Go from Here? Passion and Persistence should be read by every believer and pastor who have a desire to experience revival and New Testament Christianity. Mario Vega and the Elim Church in San Salvador are modeling New Testament Christianity and revival for all of us. They

have mastered scriptural keys for effective small group ministry. The pages of this easy-to-read book offer fresh insights. We all need to experience the life of Christ in dynamic cell groups in our generation. Thank you, Joel, for writing this amazing book. This book is truly a gift to the body of Christ that will help all of us experience the same New Testament Christianity in our regions that our brothers and sisters in Christ are experiencing in San Salvador. Larry Kreider International Director DOVE Christian Fellowship International This book and the church it so accurately describes are quite a testimony to the power of biblical community! Joel has done an excellent job telling the story of the Elim church. What impresses me most about Elim is that they have sustained so much growth with one of the original models for cell life. This church understands that loving the Lord and loving people is what makes a church successful. If you have sensed God s call to reach your city for Christ, then this book will surely motivate you in new ways as it has done for me. FOREWORD Incredible! Incredible! Incredible! This was the word I repeated to myself over and over when I first read Passion and Persistence by Dr. Joel Comiskey. What is narrated in this book is so extraordinary that if I could imagine myself as an impartial observer, I would reject it, believing it to be exaggerated and strongly biased in favor of the cell model. Certainly, it is incredible that a church such as Elim could even exist! I wouldn t believe it myself, except for two important reasons. The first is that I ve known Joel Comiskey for several years and believe he s a real man of God. Joel and I have shared brief, but intense, moments in several countries, mainly in South America. We ve shared together during church growth conferences, in work meetings, and through courtesy calls. With Joel, I have experienced the nervous excitement that precedes the opening of a new cell conference. It s a nervous tension

14 FOREWORD that comes from our commitment to faithfully give a quality presentation to pastors who have traveled many miles, and even from abroad, to attend our conferences. It was precisely in the heat of one of those moments in Santiago, Chile where we both understood that God s will was for this book to be written, as Joel relates in the introduction. Joel Comiskey is a sincere and open-minded man. He fears God, respects ministers of the Gospel, and loves people. He is capable of responding to the questions of experienced pastors about the cell model, as well as tenderly leading restaurant waiters to Jesus. Joel is not only an exemplary Christian leader, but is also a scientific researcher. His books demonstrate his capacity to extract the general, universal, and objective principles within a system s context. He has dedicated himself to study cell church models around the world. He shares his expert knowledge using the resource of logical thought. His conclusions are based on documented facts. Joel never assumes anything that he, himself, has not previously proven. When he quotes other sources, he always seeks to validate the information. The force of Joel Comiskey s objectivity resides in his ability to discover the underlying principles buried beneath the casual and the chaotic. His discernment allows him to see the activities, values, and systems that lead to the successful implementation of the cell model. The second reason I must believe in the truthfulness of Passion and Persistence is because, by the merciful design of God, I am the pastor of that church. When someone is part of an historic event, he hardly perceives the significance of how he is living. From an outside perspective, what seems impressive to other people vanishes in the midst of daily life for the one experiencing it. It is very impressive that a local church can congregate 150,000 people in a great celebration as a result of applying the cell model in a city with a total population of 1.5 million people. But for the ones

FORWARD 15 who have seen this church grow from the beginning, it seems to be just a normal, expected step. Reading Joel s book allowed me to see Elim Church from the perspective of someone on the outside and such a vision made me repeat: Incredible! Joel Comiskey and Elim Church share an attachment to facts. It is common to hear about large numbers in different churches around the world. But at Elim Church, we wouldn t talk about a church of more than 110,000 people if we couldn t verify that number in actual attendance. As I am writing these lines, we are preparing ourselves for our next great rally with 200,000 people! All this would never have been possible without the extraordinary example of Pastor David Yonggi Cho and Yoido Full Gospel Church in Seoul, South Korea. Everything began with the coming of Dr. Cho s book, The Fourth Dimension to El Salvador in 1982. Passion and Persistence owes profound gratitude to the important teachings of Pastor Cho. He not only taught about the New Testament church model which leads to growth, but also about faith, prayer, dependence on the Holy Spirit, and humility. I leave the story of Elim Church, elaborated very well by Dr. Joel Comiskey, in your hands. You may also deem it unbelievably incredible. But it is true, I assure you. Mario Vega Senior Pastor Elim Church of San Salvador, El Salvador

INTRODUCTION CAN YOUR CHURCH GROW? Like most in El Salvador, Wadner Gill was raised in a non- Christian home. When I realized that my stepfather wasn t my real dad, I became bitter. I began to take drugs and associate with gangs. Soon Wadner was stealing and even murdering people. His fellow gang members reminded him, If you ever leave this gang, we ll kill you. Another spiritual force, however, was working in Wadner s neighborhood, an Elim cell group. This neighborhood cell group met weekly on Saturday nights to evangelize non-christians. On Wednesdays the committed believers from the cell met to pray and prepare for the Saturday night meeting. I thought these people were weird, Wadner recalls. His friends and neighbors reinforced this image. Evangelicals are filled with the devil, so don t go near them. Yet, the light of Jesus kept penetrating Wadner s darkness. Several cell members testified to Wadner about a better way, truth, and life.

18 INTRODUCTION Wadner wanted to leave the gang violence but felt bound by fear to continue. The Elim cell group continued to actively befriend people in the neighborhood and multiply cell groups all around Wadner s home. Eventually Wadner accepted the invitation to attend one of Elim s large evangelistic events. During the altar call, Jesus pierced Wadner s darkness and opened his heart to the message. Wadner immediately began attending the neighborhood cell group and the weekly planning meeting. I felt like I was part of the cell by helping in the planning every Wednesday night. We talked about whom to visit, evangelize, and pray for, in preparation for the Saturday night cell. I could also freely share my own struggles and temptations. God protected Wadner from gang retaliation and even used him to testify for Jesus. I noticed a difference between real love in the cell and the false love among gang members, he recalls. Wadner followed the process of training and within eight months of his conversion, he was leading his own cell group. He not only successfully led a cell but also multiplied it three times. Those at Elim eventually asked Wadner to become a supervisor, and he now oversees seven cell groups. He is passionate about his relationship with Jesus Christ because God truly set him free. He can do no less than continue the process. Passion. Persistence. Penetration. This is the story of Elim. It s all about how a passionate church using a penetrating cell strategy is winning a city and world for Jesus Christ. This book describes how the founding mother church in San Salvador, El Salvador wins people to the Savior, trains them to become multiplying cell leaders, and then plants cell churches around the world. Many people believe that the Elim Church in San Salvador is the second largest church in the world. With 117,000 people in 8,600

INTRODUCTION 19 weekly cell groups, the mother church in San Salvador is a shining example of effective cell ministry. NOT A FAIRY TALE STORY Elim is not a fairy tale success story. They ve experienced their share of hard knocks and problems. The church weathered a civil war that killed 75,000 and a massive earthquake that devastated the country, killing 100 Elim members. Perhaps the greatest tragedy was the removal of the founding pastor due to a moral failure. Yet, in spite of these odds, the Elim Church continues to evangelize and multiply. Warning: This book is not about hidden keys or secret mysteries. You won t find magic formulas, instant success recipes or other quickgrowth techniques. Elim s growth can be attributed to their passion for Jesus, their persistence in cell group church basics, and their evangelistic penetration that multiplies cells all over the city. MEET THE SENIOR PASTOR: MARIO VEGA Mario Vega, senior pastor of Elim Church since 1997, was with Elim in 1977 when the church first started. He left the mother church in San Salvador on April 14, 1980 to help a small struggling Elim Church in Santa Ana, a province of El Salvador. Under his leadership, Elim Santa Ana Church grew to over 7,000, and since he left in 1997, the church now numbers over 10,000 people (average cell attendance). When Sergio Solórzano, the founding pastor, was asked to step down from the mother church, the leadership team asked Mario Vega to lead Elim San Salvador. Since Mario took over leadership of Elim San Salvador in 1997, the church has grown from 95,000 to 116,000 (average cell attendance in 2003).

20 INTRODUCTION Mario and I are great friends. My first encounter with him was in 1998 in Quito, Ecuador, when Mario held a citywide cell seminar in our Christian and Missionary Alliance cell group church. Mario and I conducted cell seminars among Southern Baptists in Chile in 2000 and Paraguay in 2001. In 2002, while teaming for yet another seminar in Chile, I said to Mario, You really need to write a book about your church. Such a book would give needed balance in the cell group church world. He acknowledged the need but wondered out loud how his demanding schedule would allow such an undertaking. The next morning in my quiet time, God impressed His gentle voice upon my heart saying, Joel, I want you to write the book about the Elim Church. I told Mario about my encounter with God and he said, I ve been praying all along that God would show you this. I have always believed that you should write the Elim story. FOLLOW THE PRINCIPLES As I ve become acquainted with Mario over the years, I ve realized that he is interested in promoting cell group church principles, rather than dogmatically promoting his own church model as the one true cell system. Pastor Mario actively connects with diverse cell group churches worldwide, seeing his own church as part of a larger whole. Mario is obviously very excited about what God is doing through Elim and boldly promotes what has worked for them. He realizes, however, that copying a model rarely works. The Elim Church, in fact, never copied Cho s original cell model verbatim. Elim changed and adapted the Korean cell group church model to fit its own unique circumstances. I strongly believe that this book is needed in the church world today to give balance and perspective. When our pastoral staff from

INTRODUCTION 21 Ecuador (where I was a CMA missionary for eleven years) visited the International Charismatic Mission in Bogota, Colombia, I noticed that our lead pastor was thinking seriously of copying everything he saw at ICM. My preventive medicine was to encourage him to visit Elim in San Salvador. I wanted him to see a different cell group church model that was growing just as rapidly as ICM. My hope was that the lead pastor would see at least two huge cell group churches that were following completely different models in order to understand that cell group church success is not about copying someone else s model. Rather, successful cell group church ministry takes place when a pastor understands the principles so well that he can apply them in his own context. I encourage pastors to understand the principles behind successful cell models and then apply those principles to their particular contexts. I tell them, Those who try to copy models usually fail. After failing, these same churches claim that the cell group church doesn t work. The problem, however, is trying to transport a model to another context and culture. Models rarely transfer across cultures, but principles do. A cell group church model is loaded with unique personalities, values, gifting, history, culture, and spiritual dynamics. Proven multi-cultural principles, however, can cross a wide variety of barriers and still work. I asked one successful cell church pastor, What model are you following? He said to me, Joel, from the beginning of our church plant, we decided that creativity would be one of our core values. We believe in a creative God that uniquely works in each circumstance, and thus, we decided not to follow just one or two models. Yes, we ve taken the best principles, but we re very conscientious about developing our uniqueness. Two of my former books focused on the G-12 movement that originated with the International Charismatic Mission in Bogota,

22 INTRODUCTION Colombia. Some might have assumed that I was primarily promoting ICM s model. This is not true. I m passionate about God s work through the cell group church worldwide. ICM is just one of those cell churches that God is using. Elim is another. I love the proven cell group church principles of Elim, and I hope that you ll understand and then apply those same principles in your church.
