From the desk of our astoral ssociate ctober 19 & 29, 2013 29th unday in C ccording to an old dictum, a parable has only one point. et, today s parable of the ersistent idow offers several points for our reflection: the responsibility of caring for widows, orphans and strangers, how od s providence is tied to od s compassion, graphic thoughts on the power of prayer, as well as a lesson on patient endurance. here are two characters in this parable, the unjust judge and the persistent widow. he judge s failure to be concerned about the needs of other people establishes him as the antithesis of od s justice and compassion. et, if this arrogant judge eventually responds to the widow, then how could one doubt that our od will vindicate such little ones against those who fail to ease their plight? he od we have come to know as merciful and compassionate, does not protect the property interests of the privileged but looks out for those who have no power. e build od s kingdom when we live by priorities based on compassion. nce od s compassionate nature has been clearly stated, then the call to pray and not lose heart takes on a different tone. he od to whom we pray is ready to respond to the needs of the powerless. ow does such a od hear our prayers if they are self-centered and concerned only with petty issues? o those who are worn out, hard pressed, and lacking in hope, Jesus says to pray night and day. o those who have it in their power to relieve the distress of the widow, the orphan, and the stranger but do not, the call to pray night and day is a command to let the priorities of od s compassion reorder the priorities of their lives. s we listen today, we hear that od will act to establish justice on earth. hese are words that will hopefully motivate the judge for speedy action to turn from his false priorities while there is still time. For the widow od s promise speaks a word of hope. Finally, this parable calls for a re-examination of our faith. ave we turned a deaf ear to those who cry out in need, or have we given up hope that od will hear our calls for help? Faith requires different responses from the widow and the judge. ere at t. imothy we hear the cry of the poor living in artford as we and they face what is predicted to be a very cold winter. e are collecting coats (and cash if you have no time to shop) for school aged children. opefully we will be models of the compassion of Jesus as we do our part for those who are clearly in need. astoral Care: f you or someone you know would like to receive oly Communion at home or in a nursing home please call at iano, 860-232-8594. ********************************************************** Baptism reparation: ll those having first babies baptized are asked to attend an informational class. ext class is Monday, ov. 4 at 6:00.M. in t. imothy Middle chool. lease call at iano at the rectory for more information: 860-232-8594, or patriciaannpiano@comcast.net ************************************************************ ltar erver raining: here will be a training for new servers on undays ctober 20, 27 and ov. 3 after the 10:30 Mass.
