THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF THE OUTGOING PASTOR By Rev. Eugene Sabin, 1st Christian Church, Tacoma, WA Amended by Mike Druck I. THOU SHALT NOT expect too much from the new Pastor, nor compare them with the old, for God has created them both. Each are no more than human, but each have also been Called and uniquely equipped with talents and abilities to bless and challenge you and Christ s Church. THOU SHALT pray fervently for the new Pastor and their family, celebrate their gifts and abilities, find ways to fill their gaps (since we all have them), lovingly aid them in their overcoming of their faults, and accept their correction as they aid you in overcoming your faults! II. THOU SHALT NOT ever say: "But our last Pastor didn t do it like that!" THOU SHALT be open-minded and try the new things your new Pastor bring. III. THOU SHALT NOT sin by asking the former pastor to return to perform Funerals, Weddings, Baptisms, or other normal Pastoral responsibilities, nor ask the new pastor to give permission to do this. Your former Pastor is grieved to lose you as beloved friends, but they have been Called to a new mission field and must concentrate on those they serve there. Also to return interferes in the performance of duties now assigned to your current pastor. THOU SHALT instead wholeheartedly welcome your new Pastor s handling of these acts of faith so that you may get to know them, and be blessed by their God-given gifts. IV. THOU SHALT NOT often visit or speak of or with your former Pastor. THOU SHALT instead concentrate on welcoming your new Pastor and their family. V. THOU SHALT NOT bring Church issues or ask for advice on the same from the outgoing pastor. THOU SHALT only communicate limited personal info (births, deaths, etc.) VI. If God deeply touched you through the previous pastor, THOU SHALT NOT leave the church because the former Pastor is leaving. This breaks the fellowship into which God has placed you, and violates everything about being a Church that your former Pastor taught. VII. THOU SHALT NOT sin by judging via informing the new Pastor about what you perceive to be flaws or gaps in other church people. Doing so only demonstrates that you think you are better than your fellow church members, that only you have perfect discernment, and that the new Pastor is too dumb to figure things our for themself! VIII. THOU SHALT be reasonable and generous, in attitude and act, in providing the Pastor with a reasonable remuneration for his/her services. IX. Because your new Pastor and their family are as human as you, THOU SHALT NOT communicate any weakness in the new Pastor or their Family to anyone. This only spreads negativity and undercuts God s plan to prosper the church, because in our weaknesses God shows His strength! X. THOU SHALT NOT forget to enthusiastically prepare for the new parsonage family's coming. THOU SHAULT grieve, if it is necessary, over the absence of the former parsonage family - but do so before God quietly so as to not quench the warm welcome your new parsonage family needs - for they too now grieve, having left behind ones that they love. There have been miracles and failures, joys and tears but ultimately this chapter in our lives has helped us grow and sense the blessings of God! Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your lives for a while! Pastor Mike and Barb Page 4
