Your Financial Stewardship For the week ended November 15, 2015 There is nothing quite like expecting your own child during the season of Advent. The 1st Sunday of Advent symbolizes Hope with the Prophet s Candle reminding us that Jesus is coming.* When I was eight months pregnant with my fourth child, I was an assistant principal of an inner-city Catholic High School. My due date was December 26th. As the month of November drew to a close, I began to count down to the birth of my child and it was hard not to wonder what Mary must have felt in her last four weeks of pregnancy. Hope for the birth of a healthy child filled my heart. The 2nd Sunday of Advent symbolizes Faith with the Bethlehem Candle reminding us of Mary and Joseph s journey to Bethlehem.* One day in early December, as I began to fret about life with four children instead of three, Sherrie, the Theology teacher invited me into her classroom to observe a lesson that she had taken great care with. As I entered into the classroom full of sophomores, the lesson unfolded around me. Students were given evergreen branches, tea light candles and pink and purple ribbons. Soon, Advent wreaths began to take shape. For most of these students, having an Advent wreath in the home would be an entirely new tradition. Faith is a gift we give to our students and children, and one that they often give us. The 3rd Sunday of Advent symbolizes Joy with the Shepherd s Candle reminding us of the Joy the world experienced at the coming birth of Jesus.* Toward the end of the lesson, as the materials began to take shape, Sherrie began to talk about the season of Advent and the excitement that goes with waiting for Christ to come into our lives. Students stood up one at a time to reflect on what Jesus means to them and why his birth is so important to Christians. The students gathered around, and following a blessing over my unborn child, the teacher commented on the Joy that the birth of a child can bring into a family. Nine months of anticipation, finally leading to Joy. The 4th Sunday of Advent symbolizes Peace with the Angel s Candle reminding us of the message of the angels: Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men.* Though the thought of a fourth child along with our family dedication to the ministry of Catholic education, may have been overwhelming at times, Faith, Hope and Joy together, led to a peacefulness that only the hand of God could provide to a fourth time mother. Bringing traditions of Advent into the home allows the whole family, to focus on the Holy Family, and prepare to enjoy the peacefulness that only Faith, Hope and Joy can provide. Weekly Joyful Giving Envelope $ 21,239.00 Offertory Collection... $ 1,290.00 Debt Collection... $ 2,626.00 Budgeted Weekly Joyful Giving $23,500 *www.catholiccompany.com/getfed/the-advent-wreath-traditionmeaning/ Crystal Blahnik School Principal
