Greeting from your NCD UMW President Presidents, It s 2019!! Time to celebrate the 150 years of United Methodist Women. This includes all the names of our organization up to this time. Let s tell our stories, share memories, and look with hope and purpose to our future. I believe that United Methodist Women has been a change-maker in this world a change that has lifted up those without power and resources. Being Bold for Christ is our 2019 theme. What does bold mean to you? A dictionary says courageous, daring, rude, showy. I suggest we go with the first two; we don t want to be rude or showy! Bold in Christ is the inner strength we receive from time spent in listening, prayer and sharing our faith with others. It is often risky to advocate for Jesus leadings and ways of living. His ways are often countercultural. The fruits of the Spirit are leading us to love, joy, peace, kindness, gentleness, patience, faithfulness and self-control. What a vision for our world in 2019! I think that none of us can do all we used to do. How about a change of attitude to do what we can? Say, we are a smaller unit so we can. What could be included on our Can-do list? We could fulfill our UMW Purpose in the following ways: Learn about our world neighbors using UMW programs, reading Response, and UMW studies. Read the Bible together, share insights and take action concerning your leading. Encourage each other visit by mail, phone or in person. Give of our resources to UMW. Read of the ways the funds are impacting others. Pray for your UMW unit, your district officers and other leaders. Form a book club using the UMW reading program books. Read to a child. Form one new relationship with a member of your church. All these will make this world a better place a welcoming place for Christ s love to grow. I welcome your can-do ideas. Let me know. Here s a change: in 2019, the district newsletter will be sent to those who provided their 2019 officer list to the District Secretary last Fall. The list of officers and email addresses is now with our District Communication Coordinator, Sally Redenius. Send all new information on officers and changes to Sally. Send email addresses of those who would like to receive this newsletter. We want to include all units, but old lists produced too many returned newsletters. Your help in providing correct email addresses is really appreciated. It will be my joy to see each of you at our district gatherings March 19 at Algona for Mission Study and April 23 at Mason City First for Day Apart. God, help me (us) see my (our) role in your kingdom work through United Methodist Women in 2019. Amen. Greetings from your NCD UMW Vice President! Greetings and much love from your District Vice President. I watched the movie It s a Wonderful Life at Christmas this year. The message never ceases to amaze me even though I must confess I have seen it 40 or more times and can say most of the lines by heart. To think that nothing would be the same if we had not existed and that everyone we ever spoke to or spent time with would be different without us, gives me pause each and every time I watch. Does someone need your life today? Do they need your love and support and the message of hope through Christ s birth? From the musical Hamilton and Mission u, Look around! Look around at How lucky we are to be alive right now! Someone needs your time, your talents, your presence and you have been given the most wonderful gift to be alive to share them with others. Because, when you share Christ s love with another person he is born and born again. Let us resolve to be bold disciples for Christ and share the good news. All is grace. Debra Hill 825 11th St. Place Garner, IA 50438 641-923-3248 artwoman825@gmail.com IMPORTANT PLEASE READ CAREFULLY NOTE: If you have not yet sent in your list of officers for 2019, please still do so, but use the form on pages 5 & 6 of this issue instead of the previous forms you have used. It is not necessary to resend your 2019 lists in if you already have, but if you do have any changes anytime this year, please use this new form instead of the old forms. Forms are now being sent first to the Communications Coordinator instead of the Secretary. Please note address on the top of the new form. If you have questions please email me at: sacuthbe@msn.com Thanks, Sally Redenius, NCD Communications Coordinator 515-368-3650 / 515-373-6346 JANUARY 2019 NCD UNITED METHODIST WOMEN NEWSLETTER 8

Greetings from your NCD UMW Treasurer! Happy New Year Treasurers! All the hard work of 2018 has been tallied, sent on and making a difference in the lives of women, children and youth all around the world. Take a minute to comprehend the impact that United Methodist Women and their predecessor organizations have had for 150 years. Celebrate with me the giving we have achieved together for mission this year. More than $69,000 was given in Pledge to Mission. More than $ 9,400 was given to World Thank Offering. More than $ 2,700 was given to Bidwell Riverside. More than $ 3,400 was given to Shesler Hall. More than $ 2,600 was given to Hawthorn Hill. We had 38 units earn 5 Star designation by giving to Pledge to Missions, Special Mission Recognition, Gift to Mission, Gift in Memory and World Thank Offering. I want to congratulate these units and point out that it does not take a lot of money to accomplish this. One industrious unit made their 5 Star and other giving with $77. It is possible; you just have to have a goal! But, whether you were a 5 Star unit or not, be assured your giving is very much appreciated. If you are a new treasurer, please feel free to contact me with any questions. I can email forms, instructions and talk you through your first remittance. Please, do not make the check out to me, but to North Central District United Methodist Women, and one check is all that is needed each time you send a remittance. Thanks for taking on this important job for your unit. Any unit wanting their 2018 final giving report (if you gave after the November 15 report) please just let me know. Our auditor, Tyler Miles, from the firm Brooks Lodden, P. C. in Des Moines, will be or has already contacted some units to verify your giving as part of the audit process. Please respond back as soon as possible in order to speed their progress. Thank you! A change that carries over from 2018 is that you do not have to send in the $1 for the Magazine Fund any longer. The National office is not collecting that, so please make a note of this change for 2019. Other Conference asking remains the same, $1 per member for Bidwell Riverside, Shesler Hall, Hawthorn Hill and Mission u. This is my final year as your District Treasurer. Please help our nominations committee by recommending someone or volunteering to take the position in 2020. It has been such a wonderful learning experience with the extra perk of meeting so many of you in our District. It is a very rewarding position and our Leadership Team is so great to work with. Please consider it. Blessings to you in 2019! Kathy Sautter 1041 S. Illinois Avenue Mason City, IA 50401 641-423-2742 ksautter64@gmail.com JANUARY 2019 NCD UNITED METHODIST WOMEN NEWSLETTER 9

Thank you Sharon Uken for the many hours you have served the North Central District United Methodist Women while you were our District Secretary serving as an officer on the Executive Board. We will miss seeing you at our Board meetings. Hopefully you will be able to attend the District meetings so we can visit with you again. Thanks again from the bottom of our hearts for your service! We appreciate YOU, Sharon! Greetings from your NCD UMW Secretary God s blessings to all! I pray that everyone had a blessed Christmas and safe travel if you were on the road! My Christmas was hectic and wonderful at the same time. We had the usual respiratory and flu in the family over Christmas and had to delay until New Year s Day. It is always wonderful with family whenever it happens! I have taken over the position of District Secretary this year. I don t have a lot to offer as far as advice, since I don t know everything that I have to do, but hope I won t goof it up too much! I will still help with the nominations if they need me, since we are having trouble finding help! I would like to thank Sharon Uken for her wonderful work as District Secretary these past two years! We appreciated you taking on the job and hope you stay active in United Methodist Women. I also pray that you all will have a wonderful new year in 2019. Please keep our United Methodist Women s groups in your prayers. We need a lot of help to keep everything going. BE BOLD FOR CHRIST! Greetings from your NCD UMW Communications Coordinator! The Local Unit Officers 2019 format has been changed slightly. See new form on pages 5 & 6 of this issue of Flaming Fortress. In the process of making changes it was decided that this form should be mailed to the Communications person (that s me!) instead of the Secretary and then sent on to others in need. The reason for this would be that I need email changes sooner than I might have been receiving them making some of the newsletters not going through because of errors in the email addresses. It is VERY important that the correct email addresses get printed on the form when you send it. Checking with each officer to be sure of their correct email might be helpful before sending out the form. Chances are your church office also has the correct email addresses of your officers. I really appreciate how all of the officers work together getting changes to me if they hear of some through their District Friend visits. All of your help continues to make our team work better! Keep up the good work! Blessings to you and your work for United Methodist Women in 2019. Sally Redenius 207 East Iowa Avenue Gilmore City, IA 50541 Home 515-373-6346 Cell 515-368-3650 sacuthbe@msn.com PURPOSE of UNITED METHODIST WOMEN The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. NEW YEAR s Greetings from your NCD UMW Education and Interpretation Coordinator! I wish you all good health and happiness in Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior. One month ago, November 30 to be exact, we at Corwith UMC said our good-byes to a dear friend Dianne Chambers. She served many years as a UMW North Central District Officer. I d like to share this Spiritual Alphabet that Dianne Chambers shared with the Flaming Fortress in February of 1995. This was written by Dorothy Shellenberger. Spiritual Alphabet This year I d like to be a better person than I have been this past year. To help me achieve this goal, I ve formed a spiritual alphabet. I m resolved to memorize and practice my ABC s. Anger makes me unattractive. Overcome it. (Psalms 37:8) Be forgiving. I want my sins forgiven, don t I? (Luke 6:37) Count my blessings, name them one by one. (Proverbs 10:22) Delete negatives from my mind and conversation. (Philippians 4:8) Eat wisely. Exercise regularly. My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 6: 19-20) Find a place of service and then be a faithful servant. (Matthew 25:21) Go the second mile. (Philippians 3:14) Hide God s word in my heart. It will keep me from sinning. (Psalms 119:1) Imitate Jesus. (John 13:35) Judge not. (Matthew 7:1) Know the truth. It will set me free. (John 8:32) Live by the golden rule. (Matthew 7:12) Make a joyful noise unto the Lord. (Psalms 66:1-2) Never spend time or effort trying to even the score. (Matthew 5:39-42) Owe no one anything but love, appreciation, forgiveness. (Romans 13:8) Pray about everything. (Philippians 4:6) Quench not the spirit. (1 Thessalonians 5:19) Respect all human life. We are made in God s image. (Genesis 1:27) Start keeping a prayer journal. (1 John 5:13) Tell someone you love that you love them; tell them again. (Romans 5:5) Up with praise, down with criticism. (Matthew 7:3-4) Visit a shut-in. (Matthew 25:36) Whosoever in God s Word means me! Take it personally. (John 3:16) X-cel in saying I m sorry. (Luke 17:3) Yesterday is gone enjoy today. It may be all I have. (Psalms 118:24) Zero in on my spiritual ABC s. Make them my priority this year. (Matthew 6:33) Dear Lord, help me to be disciplined in learning to love you from A to Z. I d also like to remind you of our District Mission Event which will be held on Tuesday March 19 th at Algona First United Methodist Church. The snow date is Tuesday March 26 th. Daniel Corrow will be our presenter. He will be presenting issues discussed in Susan Taylor s book What About Our Money. Daniel is an enthusiastic presenter and has some great hands-on activities planned for us. You ll find a flyer on page 13 in this issue giving you more details on our District Mission Day. Greetings from your NCD UMW Membership Nurture and Outreach Co-Chairs! Happy New Year to Everyone! As I am writing this on Christmas Eve, I am thinking how Mary, the mother of Jesus, would have nurtured him with all the love she had. I believe this is how we as United Methodist Women can nurture each other, too. And not just at Christmas time, but all through the year, and beyond. As the new year begins, it is time to be reporting your membership for 2018. The deadline is March 30, 2019, but doing it early is always better. Here are a few instructions to help, as they were shared by another district. These were also in the October newsletter. 1. Fill out the form that was in the Presidents Packet given at the annual meeting. This will give you the information you need when you go on-line. 2. Go to www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/census2018. There will be a video that will instruct you on how to fill out the form. 3. There are asterisks in front of some questions. These are the questions that you must answer. All the other questions are optional. For your information, there is one question on the bottom of the form that must be answered. (It's easy to miss!) 4. Than submit. Please remember to send us UMW members names and/or their funeral pamphlets when they pass away. I would like to mention something about The Legacy Fund. Not only should we think about the financial part of it with our giving, but I feel we can leave a legacy of what we have done for women, children and youth as we move into the next 150 years. What we do hopefully will continue for many, many more years if we can continue to grow in membership! That should be each of our goals! We hope you had a Blessed Christmas with family and friends and are looking forward to the year ahead as to what it will bring. Greetings from your NCD UMW Secretary of Program Resources! We are now all opening a new chapter in our lives to the New 2019 Year. With the new year starting I hope every one of you are getting a little free time to enjoy some reading this coming year. If any of you need help obtaining any information or books from the reading list for someone let me know. I would be glad to do what I can to help. Make sure you jot the titles down to turn in on June 30th for your reading rewards. Remember the website unitedmethodistwomen.org has a wealth of resources. Check them out! I enjoyed getting together in December and getting to know the other district officers. I am looking forward to our District Mission Study on March 19 at Algona UMC when I can meet more of you. It sounds like there will be a lot of change on how things will be ordered for program resources this year. I will try and keep you updated as these changes take place. Have a good year in your Christian Walk with Christ in 2019. Blessings, Janet Abele 725 West 8th Street Garner, Iowa 50438 641-923-2508 (Home) 712-355-2460 (Cell) abelerj@msn.com 2 0 1 9 JANUARY 2019 NCD UNITED METHODIST WOMEN NEWSLETTER 18

Greetings from your NCD UMW Social Action Coordinator! I pray that everyone has a happy and prosperous new year. This is the season God showed us how much he loved us by sending us his Son as a baby and Savior. Jesus taught by example with patience and understanding. Now it is our turn to be an example for the people of the world. If we follow His teachings, we will lead with a firm hand and endeavor to be truthful and considerate of all people. Really what is the truth? It is not bending the facts to fit your cause. It is not sweeping the facts under the rug or making false statements. The world would be a much better place if everyone would be compassionate and considerate. We need to listen to everyone s ideas and take the best parts and put them together to make a great plan for action. We need to access the consequences of our actions. We need to evaluate all effects of our decisions. Sometimes we can cause a situation where helping one can cause others to seek the same help and they put themselves in danger and disasters happen. We need to be compassionate but insistent. The best way forward is to encourage all people to fight for their rights. The problems for safety and economic issues need to be solved by each country. Corruption is one of the hardest problems to solve in any country. This is when we must stand firm. Truth is the only way forward. Jesus taught us by his example. We need to follow his example and teach to all people. Let s make a New Year s resolution to teaching, learning and living the truth. Greetings from your NCD UMW Nominations Committee! Blessings for this new year. I had a joyous time with my family and hope you and yours did too. It is a bit gloomy today but the next few days are supposed to be sunny and warmer. Thanks to Pat Hartwig for stepping up and taking on the District Secretary position. With that said, we still need others who will step up. We are looking for a couple more people for the Nominations Committee. We are also still searching for a Spiritual Growth Coordinator. We will be starting the search for a new District Treasurer for 2020. Kathy Sautter graciously volunteered for one more year. Feel free to contact any member of the committee for your ideas/suggestions. On the following page, there is also a form you may use for suggesting new people for these positions. Please prayerfully consider joining our Leadership Team. We are a fun group. We create lots of new memories and enjoy every one of them. Let s make this new year even better than the last one. Blessings to all. Barbara Petrone Barbara Petrone, Co-Chair 319 N. 1st Street, PO 476 Ogden, IA 50212 515-275-2078 barbarap@netins.net Lavonne Hoover, Co-Chair 505 S.E.
