Most Reverend Bishop Joe S. Vásquez, Retired Bishop John McCarthy, Worthy Master, Reverend Fathers, Sir Knights and Ladies: Patriotism Texas Catholic Pro Life Day and Rally for Life January 26, 2013. This is the biggest statewide Pro Life annual event, be sure to reserve the Day with fallouts at San Jose and leading the march to the Capitol. This will be the 40 th anniversary of the tragic Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision in 1973, which made abortion legal throughout all nine months of pregnancy. Mass for Life: Fallout 9:30am San Jose (come early for parking) Mass 10:30 am March for Life: 1 pm Meet in the parking lot at the northwest corner of 15th Street and Colorado Street for the march to the South Steps of the Capitol Call to Prayer For Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty This is a call and encouragement to prayer and sacrifice - it's meant to be simple.... Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty are not only foundational to Catholic social teaching but also fundamental to the good of society. The well-being of society requires that life, marriage, and religious liberty are promoted and protected. Serious threats to each of these goods, however, have raised unprecedented challenges to the Church and to the nation. See one page flyer later in this newsletter Tis the Season We had a great turnout for the Christmas Eve Mass with the Bishop at St. Mary s Cathedral. 14 Sir Knights handled the fallout, thanks to all and especially to our two Color Corp Commanders, Kevin and Albert. Rome to Home Just in case you missed this I am reprinting a News Release from the Vatican, very important for all of us as secular society tries to redefine marriage and family values. Pope stresses opposition to gay marriage citing family values VATICAN CITY The pope pressed his opposition to gay marriage Friday, denouncing what he described as people manipulating their God-given identities to suit their sexual choices -- and destroying the very "essence of the human creature" in the process. Benedict XVI made the comments in his annual Christmas address to the Vatican bureaucracy, one of his most important speeches of the year. He dedicated it this year to promoting traditional family values in the face of vocal campaigns in France, the United States, Britain and elsewhere to legalize same-sex marriage. In his remarks, Benedict quoted the chief rabbi of France, Gilles Bernheim, in saying the campaign for granting gays the right to marry and adopt children was an "attack" on the traditional family made up of a father, mother and children. People dispute the idea that they have a nature, given to them by their bodily identity, that serves as a defining element of the human being," he said. "They deny their nature and decide that it is not something previously given to them, but that they make it for themselves." "The manipulation of nature, which we deplore today where our environment is concerned, now becomes man's fundamental choice where he himself is concerned," he said. It was the second time in a week that Benedict has taken on the question of gay marriage, which is dividing France, and which scored big electoral wins in the United States last month. In his recently released annual peace message, Benedict said gay marriage, like abortion and euthanasia, was a threat to world peace. After the peace message was released last week, gay activists staged a small protest in St. Peter's Square. Church teaching holds that homosexual acts are "intrinsically disordered," though it stresses that gays should be treated with compassion and dignity. As pope and as head of the Vatican's orthodoxy watchdog before that, Benedict has been a strong enforcer of that teaching: One of the first major documents released during his pontificate said men with "deep-seated" homosexual tendencies shouldn't be ordained priests. For the Vatican, though, the gay marriage issue goes beyond questions of homosexuality, threatening what the church considers to be the bedrock of society: a family based on a man, woman and their children. In his speech, the pope cited Bernheim as lamenting how a new "philosophy of sexuality" has taken hold, whereby sex and gender are "no longer a given element of nature that man has to accept and personally make sense of: it is a social role that we choose for ourselves, while in the past it was chosen for us by society." He said God had created man and woman as a specific "duality" -- "an essential aspect of what being human is all about." Now, though, "Man and woman as created realities, as the nature of the human being, no longer exist. Man calls his own nature into question. From now on he is merely spirit and will." The Vatican's opposition to gay marriage has been falling largely on deaf ears. Under then- Socialist leader Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, the largely Roman Catholic Spain legalized gay marriage. Three U.S. states approved same-sex marriage by popular vote in November elections. Earlier this month, the British government announced it will introduce a bill next year legalizing gay marriage, though it would ban the Church of England from conducting same-sex ceremonies. In France, President Francois Hollande has said he would enact his "marriage for everyone" plan within a year of taking office last May. The text will go to parliament next month. But the country has been divided by vocal opposition from religious leaders, prime among them Bernheim, as well as some politicians and parts of rural France. The Socialist government's plan also envisions legalizing same-sex adoptions. Benedict quoted Bernheim as denouncing the plan, saying that it would mean a child would essentially be considered an object people have a right to obtain. "When freedom to be creative becomes the freedom to create oneself, then necessarily the Maker himself is denied and ultimately man too is stripped of his dignity as a creature of God," Benedict said. The Sir Knight News F ROM OUR FAITHFUL CAPTAIN... Sir Knights, Happy New Year! The first half of the fraternal year is done, and it was a pretty good first half. We added a few new Sir Knights to the Assembly, and some of them have already been quite active in participating in Fallouts. We have also had some decent numbers at the Fallouts. But like our past Faithful Friar Father Hal Zink used to say, It s no time to rest on your Laurels. We need to be as active as we can be in attending Meetings, Funerals, and Fallouts. Please remember that it is not necessary to have your Regalia to Fallout, one new member has not let it stop him from taking part in several Fallouts since he joined. Good job Miguel Leon! We had a very good turnout for Midnight Mass at the Cathedral with 14 Sir Knights in attendance. All but one of those was from our Assembly 1099. The other was Todd Sanders from Bishop Harris Assembly. We had 2 Color Corps Commanders present with Kevin and Albert. It was a beautiful Mass as always. Mark your Calendars now, it will happen again next year, Christmas Eve 2013! The next event coming up is the Pro-Life Mass and Rally on January 26. This is also one of the Events that we have always had a real good showing for. If you cannot make it the whole day, please consider showing up for at least one half of the event. Either try and make it to the Mass, or to the Rally downtown. Last year there was a very large Rally crowd and we, the Fourth Degree, led it. You will not be disappointed. The Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity is due this month, so be prepared to fill one out at the Meeting. I am sure our Faithful Comptroller Mike Moreno will have copies ready. Also with the end of the year and start of a new one, our Dues are now due, which he will be collecting for. With the New Year, almost all of us make resolutions to do something. It usually is something most of us will work hard at keeping, some will make it, some will not. I started one a few months back, and with the New Year here I will work harder to stay the course. I hope you all keep yours. May we all make being a better Catholic, Knight and Man one of them. Future Dates to Note: January 26, Pro-Life Mass and Rally starting with Mass at San Jose and Rally January 20, Texas Cheer, San Antonio Details at Business Meeting Keep your Swords Bright Thanks, SK Roger Ibarra, Jr. Faithful Captain 1099 Page 3 St Paul Council 10209 Golf Tournament 2013 Fellow Brother Knights Hoping everyone is having or I should say had a great Christmas with their families and friends. It is time to turn our attention to our biggest Fund Raiser of the year. That is our Annual Golf Tournament. This year it is scheduled for April 27th, 8 AM Shotgun Start at Lion's Municipal Golf Course. I'm calling out to all Knights to get involved in some way. There are some that give a lot and that's greatly appreciated. We need every Knight to ask how can I help make this event the best ever. It may be something small or could be more. The key here is to ask how can I help. We will find something for you based on how much time you have available. This is a fun event for sure, but it helps us to provide scholarships and fund many other worthy causes. Hope to hear from you and hope the New Year is good to you and your families. Thanks Bill Hoagland Tournament Director
