THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, historically known by its Latin name, Corpus Christi, celebrates the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. Jesus, in giving us the Eucharist, makes several different statements about the Eucharist being His Body and Blood. Perhaps the most well-known of these passages comes from the Gospel of John, Chapter 6, versus 32-59, in which Jesus proclaims, I am the Bread of Life. You who come to me shall not hunger, and you who believe in me shall not thirst. This passage is one of the most beautiful passages pertaining to the Eucharist, because in it, Jesus lays out for us exactly what we must do to have life in Him. The cup of salvation I will take up, and I will call upon the name of the LORD. Psalm 116:13 TODAY S READINGS First Reading This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you (Exodus 24:3-8). Psalm I will take the cup of salvation, and call on the name of the Lord (Psalm 116). Second Reading Christ is the mediator of a new covenant (Hebrews 9:11-15). Gospel This is my body. This is my blood of the covenant (Mark 14:12-16, 22-26). BLESSED CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR CONFIRMATION CLASS OF 2018 On the cover of this Sunday s Bulletin, you will see the names of the young women and men who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this Sunday at 2:00 PM. Please pray for them as they take their place in our Parish Community. We are very grateful to His Eminence Edwin Cardinal O Brien for coming all the way from Rome to confer this Sacrament on the 8th Grade students in our Parish Religious Education Program. Thank you, Cardinal O Brien! TO THE CONFIRMANDI As you celebrate this milestone in your journey of faith, we pray that the Holy Spirit be with you to renew and strengthen you in your commitment to follow Christ. We encourage you to use your gifts and talents in the service of the Church, the Community, and the Nation. You ve prepared your heart in so many ways for this special day, through study, prayer, and service. We pray you will continue to live a life of faith, encouraged, inspired, and strengthened by the Holy Spirit. Please know that you will always have the love, prayers, and support of all of us here at St. Catharine s. If you are what you should be, you will set the world on fire! St. Catherine of Siena THANK YOU Blest are we for the gift of our children and the wonderful men and women who teach our faith to them! Every year the Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated in our parish, as it is in so many parishes. In many ways it brings to fulfillment years of effort by our parishioners to share the gift of faith with these young men and women. Today, let us take a moment to thank the parents, teachers, and all involved in faith formation, for their untiring efforts to prepare them. Let us promise our continued prayers as their teachers and companions in the ways of faith. We should remind our children that religion is a way of life and that our Catholic faith must be lived daily. Let us also be thankful for the work God carries out through us and from which He invites us all to be filled with hope and joy.

THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST Every year, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, or Corpus Christi, but, in reality, it is celebrated every day of the year at every Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. At the Last Supper, Jesus said, This is my Body; this is my Blood. These words were not spoken by a mere man, but by Jesus, Our Lord and Savior. He seals His Words not with a handshake, but with His own Precious Blood. These words are true and trustworthy and ought to be believed. The foundation of our Catholic Faith is our belief in Jesus Real Presence, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, in the Blessed Sacrament. As Catholics, it is important that we exercise our faith by example and word so that it may be strengthened and grow deeper. JESUS TOOK THE BREAD He took the bread, broke it, gave it to His disciples saying, Take this all of you and eat it, this is my body which will be given up for you. Jesus took the bread. The verb to take is very significant. The bread was not given to Him, or shared with Him. He took it. Just as, at the Last Supper, He took the cup. The bread which Jesus takes is that of the Paschal Seder, called the Afikoman. This unleavened bread is broken by the head of the household at the beginning of the Seder, and one half of it is wrapped in a white napkin and hidden, buried. The Afikoman represents the Paschal Lamb, the lamb which was slaughtered by each family in Egypt, and whose blood was placed on the door posts of their house, making the Angel of Death pass over them, saving them from destruction. For us, this bread is no longer a representation of the Paschal lamb, it is Christ Himself. Jesus took upon himself the sins of the world. Jesus is the lamb who was slaughtered, buried, and then brought back to life on the third day. When we go to Mass, when we eat this bread, we partake of the death of Jesus, so that His Resurrection may also be experienced by us. We need the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ to remind us of this precious gift from God. TODAY S SECOND COLLECTION BLACK AND INDIAN MISSIONS Today s Second Collection is in support of the Church s ongoing ministry to the Black and Indian Missions. Your financial contribution helps provide the presence of missionaries in African American, Native American and Alaska Native missions, schools, and religious education programs. Thank you for your generosity. AN EVENING OF SONG & PRAYER TO HONOR OUR LADY OF FATIMA WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13 th, 7:00 PM Please join us in the Church to honor Our Lady of Fatima with a wonderful Evening of Song and Prayer. The beautiful statue of Our Lady of Fatima will be with us for the month of June so that our parishioners and others may come and spend quiet time in prayer. We hope you will take advantage of this blessed opportunity. THE GRACE OF THE SACRAMENTS Two months ago, we celebrated Easter, joyously recalling the Resurrection of Jesus, and the share He freely gives us in His new life. We call this share, grace. No need to earn, achieve or merit this grace it s pure gift! Even the word itself means a gift freely given. God gives us this grace in Baptism. God nourishes this grace in the Holy Eucharist. As earthly food nourishes our body, heavenly food, Holy Communion, feeds the soul. What a joy it was to see the 2 nd Grade girls and boys in our Parish Religious Education Program receive Our Lord in Holy Communion a few weeks ago for the first time! God restores His grace in the Sacrament of Penance. God strengthens this gift of grace in Confirmation. Look at the word through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, God confirms the grace He lavished upon us at Baptism. God is in the business of life. His Son, Jesus, told us, I came to bring life, life to the fullest. God gives us human life at the moment of conception; He pours His own divine life (grace) into our hearts at Baptism; He nourishes it in Holy Communion; He restores it in Penance; and affirms it in Confirmation. And, He invites us to share it with Him forever in Heaven. THANK YOU FROM ST. CATHARINE S PREP PREP classes are now over for the year. It was our pleasure to be able to share a wonderful year of growth and faith with you and your children. A special word of thanks to Monsignor McAree, Father Abraham, and Deacon John Jurasek for their support. We are truly blessed here at St. Catharine s to have such dedicated men of faith leading us. We are also very grateful to our amazing Catechists and Assistants who have worked very hard to share their faith with your children. We are so lucky to have such a fine staff their dedication to your children and faith is evident in all the wonderful learning activities that happen each week in each class. Thank you to all the families who have completed registration for their children. If you still need to register for the 2018-2019 school year, you may do so online at www.saintcatharines.churchgiving.com. God bless you! Mrs. Audrey Angelini
