WORSHIP CELEBRATION January 6, 2019 10:15 a.m. Morristown United Methodist Church Christ Centered Spirit Led The mission of our church is to engage all people in knowing, loving, and serving God to transform lives, communities, and the world.

WORSHIP CELEBRATION January 6, 2019 Epiphany of the Lord 10:15 a.m. Happy New Year Centering Words (Isaiah 60) Arise, shine, for your light has come. The glory of God s goodness and grace has risen upon you that you may show God s love in all that you do. Arise, shine, for your light has come. Identifies time to stand, as you are able. PRELUDE Paris Angelicus Cesar Frank Jennifer Yang INTROIT We Three Kings Sarah Michal (Verses 1 and 5) No. 254 We three kings of Orient are; bearing gifts we traverse afar, field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star. Refrain: O star of wonder, star of light, star with royal beauty bright, Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light. Glorious now behold him arise; King and God and sacrifice: Alleluia, alleluia! sounds through the earth and skies. [Refrain.] CALL TO WORSHIP Rev. Dr. Steve Bechtold Leader: Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of God s goodness and grace has risen upon you. People: We come like the Magi, following the star of the Christ Child. Leader: Arise and shine for your moment has come, and the glory of God s love and mercy flows through you into the world. People: We come to share the good news that Christ lives among us. Leader: Arise and shine, for you are called to be God s people, and to bring good news and great joy to a world that yearns for wholeness and peace. People: Let us worship the God who calls us. OPENING HYMN Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee No. 89 OPENING PRAYER (in unison) Matt Zeller Bright, shining Maker of visions and dreams, the good news of your love lights up the world with radiant glory. We see you in rain and snow, in sunrise and sunset, in the smiles and hugs and celebrations that greet the new year. Like the Magi who followed a star to welcome the newborn Christ, help us follow the star of your love. Share with us the boundless riches of your grace, so that we might be bearers of your goodness, in the name of Jesus, who is the Christ, now and in the days to come. Amen (Please be seated.) CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison) Our God of grace, heal us with your steadfast love when we close our minds and shutter our hearts, fail to let your brightness shine through us. Restore us in your mercy when we put our own comfort before the needs of others, and when we are unwilling to stop the oppression and violence in the world. Renew us in the power of your Spirit. Amen.

SILENT REFLECTION WORDS OF ASSURANCE Leader: The Holy One fills us with the brightness of Christ, and makes us shine like a star in the deepest night. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven and made a new creation. People: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven and made a new creation! Thanks be to God. ANTHEM Saw You Never in the Twilight Austin C. Lovelace Chancel Choir CHILDREN S STORYTIME A TIME OF COMMUNITY PRAYER PASTORAL PRAYER THE LORD S PRAYER (in unison) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen. HYMN This Is a Day of New Beginnings No. 383 (Verses 1, 2, 3 and 5) PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION (in unison) Matt Zeller Faithful God, as your word is proclaimed, we pray for purity of heart, mind, and action. Through the gift of your message, breathe your Spirit within our lives, in the name of the one who came to embody your word. Amen. SCRIPTURE READING Matthew 2:1-12 Matt Zeller The Visit of the Wise Men In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage. When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel. Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage. When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. The Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. Leader: Christ be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to God. Leader: Let us give our thanks to the Holy One. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. HOLY COMMUNION LITURGY Celebrant: Rev. Dr. Steve Bechtold : It is right, good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, who set a star in the sky to guide the Magi as they searched for the holy Child and warned them to go home by another way. And so, with your creatures on earth and all the heavenly chorus, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: People: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed in the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Leader: Holy are you, and holy is your child, Jesus Christ. On the night in which he gave himself up, Jesus took bread, broke it and said: Take, eat, all of you. This is my body, broken for you. Whenever you eat it, do so in remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup and said: Drink this, all of you. This is the cup of the new covenant, poured out for the healing of the world. Whenever you drink it, do so in remembrance of me. And so, in remembrance of your mighty acts In Jesus Christ, we proclaim the mystery of faith. People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Leader: Pour out your Holy Spirit on us and on these gifts of bread and cup. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may offer light and hope to a world that is broken and is divided. To you, who are the only true light, we give our thanks and praise. People: Amen.
