a daily reading guide for our journey through matthew

January 2019 I can t tell you how excited I am that you have chosen to begin your journey through the Gospel of Matthew. I certainly desire to see our church grow numerically as we reach people who are far from Christ with His love, grace, and mercy. Skyline Church exists to reach people right where they are just as Jesus commands us. However, as Jesus meets all of us right where we are, He never intends for us to stay where we are. God calls us all, individually, to walk along side of Him in our lives and grow to become more like Him every single day. This journey of life and growth is a process called discipleship. To be a disciple is to become a student or learner. What better way to learn more about God and who He has called us to be than to use His Word as our guide. Over the next few months you have an incredible opportunity to do just that. This Bible reading plan is just a piece of that opportunity. Your challenge is to utilize this tool every day as you learn how to H.E.A.R. from God more deeply and intimately. Each day you will have a small passage of scripture to read and take a few moments to use the H.E.A.R. journaling method to guide your thoughts. Here are some suggestions on how to go about your daily Bible reading through our journey together. Pick the best time of day for you. I would suggest starting your day off with God s Word. Wake up 30 minutes early, grab a hot cup of coffee, and settle in to your favorite chair. Begin with a short prayer. Ask God to speak to you as you read. Confess any sin you may be struggling with. And thank Him for the chance to spend some valuable time with Him. Quietly read the passage listed in the Daily Reading Plan. Use the H.E.A.R. journaling method to jot down some thoughts or ideas that come to mind. Highlight a verse in the passage that jumps out to you. Explain the main point or insight of the text in your own words. Write out how you might apply the idea of the passage to your life. And finally RESPOND. Respond by praying once again, focusing specifically on the verse and passage that was read. This is a great time to ask God to challenge you and strengthen you in implementing the application the text to your life.

This Bible Reading Plan will also play a key role in everything else going on at Skyline in the coming months. The sermons you will hear on Sunday morning and the content of the discussion from your Community Group will come directly from this reading plan. Know that I am praying for you as you begin this journey. My prayer is that you will begin to see the Bible as you have never seen it before. I pray that God will challenge you to greater steps of faith in your life. And I pray that this is the beginning of change in your walk with Christ that is more amazing than you have ever dreamed. Live Radically, Pastor Lance

Getting the most out of a bible reading plan Creating an Atmosphere to H.E.A.R. from God. The H.E.A.R. journaling method promotes reading the Bible with a life-transforming purpose. No longer will your focus be on checking off the boxes on your daily reading schedule; your purpose will instead be to read in order to understand and respond to God s Word. The acronym H.E.A.R. stands for Highlight, Explain, Apply, and Respond. This would be the verse from the passage that jumps out to you the most. You will want to write this verse out. In the explain section you will take the verse or maybe a different portion of the text and see to explain in more in your own words or to provide some insight into the text. This would be where you use some basic skills of interpretation. Some of this is just asking who, what, why, when, where, how. You will take a few minutes and think and pray about how God would apply this verse or passage to your life. Be looking for ways to immediately apply and not just looking at doing something in the future. You want God s Word to change your life and this is a great place to start. This will be a prayer of response to God regarding the verse and passage that was read, asking God for the strength in implementing the application of the text.
