HIGHLIGHTS FOR FEBRUARY 2017 Communion February 4, 2017 Book of John Better Wine Pastor Lonnie Wibberding One of the first things Jesus did at the start of his ministry was to go to a wedding. Jesus was the creator and was the one who created the institution of marriage. The marriage couple ran out of wine at the wedding celebration. Although this was not a life or death situation, Jesus still performed the miracle of turning water into wine, and in doing so, prevented the marriage couple from being socially embarrassed. Once the disciples saw this miracle, they began to put their faith in Jesus. The pots used for the water to wine miracle were normally used for ceremonial washing of hands. It must have been quite different to see wine in the pots instead of water. When Jesus performed this miracle using the ceremonial pots, He showed the people that relationships are more important than a list of do s and don ts, and that there is a different kind of cleansing that is also more important than ceremonial cleansing. Jesus was going to cleanse people from the inside out, unlike the Pharisees who were concerned with appearances and only cleansed themselves on the outside. At the end of Jesus ministry, a different kind of cleansing was revealed when He held up the cup of wine (that symbolized His blood) and said, this is my blood, I am going to die for you so that you can be cleansed from your sins.
