A. M. NOTES We Affirm the Biblical Model of Church Government, 1 Timothy 3:1 12 GBC Distinctive Series, Shaun Marksbury I. Introduction II. The Bible Calls for the Office of Elders A. Elders Must Be Biblically Qualified Based on 1 Timothy 3:1 7 and Titus 1:5-9, an elder must be above reproach, be not addicted to wine, be not a new convert, be the husband of one wife, be not pugnacious, be self-controlled, be temperate, be gentle, be sensible, be prudent, be uncontentious, be not self-willed, be respectable, be not fond of sordid gain, be not quick-tempered, be hospitable, manage his household well, loving what is good, be able to teach, control his children with be just and devout, and be free from the love of money, dignity, be able to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict, have a good reputation outside the church. B. Elders Must Be Biblically Plural C. Elders Must Exercise Biblical Authority 1. Note the Authority the Bible Grants to Elders Elders must oversee, care for or manage God s people (cf. vv. 4 5), decide policy for God s people (cf. Acts 15), lay hands on or ordain those ministering to God s people (cf. 1 Tm 4:11), 4

rule God s people well (1 Tm 5:17; cf. 1 Thess 5:12; 1 Tm 3:2), and instruct or rebuke (Ti 1:9). Scripture commands the congregation to appreciate and even esteem its elders (1 Th 5:12 13), to remember and imitate its elders (Hb 13:7), and to obey and submit to its elders (Hb 13:17). 2. Note the Limits on Authority the Bible Places on Elders He should manage or care for the church well (1 Tm 3:4 5), pay as careful attention to himself as he does to the flock (Acts 20:28), not neglect his gift(s) (1 Tm 4:11), rule well and labor in preaching and teaching (1 Tm 5:17), hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught (Ti 1:9); According to 1 Peter 5:1 3, he must shepherd the flock eagerly and willingly exercising oversight (it s a personal, God-given desire), without being compelled to do so (which would be no profit to the church), without seeking shameful gain (his desire is not wealth or influence), without domineering (he may be firm in conviction, but gentle and humble in heart), and overall exemplary service to the flock. III. IV. The Bible Calls for the Office of Deacons Acts 6 Conclusion 5

MODERN STATEMENTS TO KNOW: The Danvers Statement (1988) The Danvers Statement summarizes the need for the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (CBMW) and serves as an overview of our core beliefs. This statement was prepared by several evangelical leaders at a CBMW meeting in Danvers, Massachusetts, in December of 1987. This includes recognizable names such as John Frame, Wayne Grudem, John Piper, S. Lewis Johnson, Richard Mayhue, and many others. It was first published in final form by the CBMW in Wheaton, Illinois in November of 1988. Each week, we will look at one affirmation from the statement. The full text is available at https://cbmw.org/about/danvers-statement. Affirmation 7 In both men and women a heartfelt sense of call to ministry should never be used to set aside Biblical criteria for particular ministries (1 Tim 2:11-15, 3:1-13; Tit 1:5-9). Rather, Biblical teaching should remain the authority for testing our subjective discernment of God s will. Commentary This was an issue in 1987, and it remains an issue in 2018. Those who are unqualified for particular ministry will claim exemption with the words God has called me. In other words, the person simply has a strong desire in their heart or heard a voice in the mind that he or she interprets as God s call, a means of determining God s will evidencing more disqualification! God won t contradict Himself, and He wants us searching His written Word for His will on matters. 6
