With Mary and Joseph, we wait for Christ, the Advent candles lighting the way for us. We welcome this light, and repeat, in the spirit of Pope Francis: Those who have opened their hearts to God s love; who have heard His voice and received His light cannot keep this gift of Christs light to themselves. I think that we best prepare for Christmas by taking it upon ourselves to spread this light. We can do this as we care for the poor, take time for daily prayers, and by choosing to forgive ourselves as well as those who have hurt us, perhaps even broken our hearts. Advent is the season of new beginnings. The gift of Christ s light also helps us to see all the different images of Christmas that prepare us for Jesus birth the carols in the stores, the lights in the streets, trees and decorations, even parties and Santa hats, and certainly, the ways we choose to pray and recall in our memories, past Christmas days with joy. No doubt about it, GOD IS NEAR. Peace and Good, Deacon Hervé Lemire RENEWAL is published weekly by the Franciscan Renewal Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization 5802 E. FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION Making an Advent Wreath One of the most traditional activities for Advent is creating an advent wreath. Don t worry, it is not as hard you think! An advent wreath consists of greenery with four candles, three purple and one pink. You can also include a white candle to light on Christmas day. Each candle has a specific meaning: Candle one (purple) represents hope. It is often called the prophets candle. Candle two (purple) represents peace. It is often called the angels candle. Candle three (pink) represents joy. It is often called the shepherds candle. Candle four (purple) represents love. It is often called the Bethlehem candle. Many advent wreaths also include a white Christ candle in the middle of the wreath. This is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas day. This candle reminds us that Jesus is the light of the world. To celebrate with an Advent wreath, you light a candle on each Sunday of Advent. The first Sunday, you light candle one; the second Sunday you light candles one and two, etc. There are lots of ways to make Advent wreaths. It is a fun craft to do with kids and adults alike and may establish a new family tradition for you. Check out various ideas on the web, and find what works best for your family. Happy Advent...ure! Family Faith Activities Nov. 27 First Sunday of Advent Stay awake! Be ready! There is an edge of tension and excitement in the Gospel today. Here, on the first Sunday of the liturgical year, we are called to attention, to alertness, to vigilance not for the first coming of Christ in the weakness and vulnerability of a human child, but for the second coming of Christ, in judgment and in glory. These images of Noah and the flood, one person taken, another left, can be frightening. Yet these images stress the unexpected nature of our Lord s return and the need for our attentiveness to the coming of Christ. Ask your family to share how they can prepare their hearts to welcome Jesus. Read Matthew 24:37-44 and ask: What does Jesus tell His followers about what is going to happen on earth in the final days? How does Jesus comfort His listeners? Why will Jesus protect His followers? Celebration Clock: Use a big poster board to draw and decorate a clock. Write the words Be Ready When Jesus Comes, and draw the hands of the clock or attach with a brad. As a family, write the ways we can be ready for Jesus, either on the clock or on the poster board. Concluding Prayer: Let us pray. Dear Jesus, during the season of Advent, make our hearts ready to welcome you. We pray in the name of Christ our Lord. Amen. AFTCO and Christmas, a Perfect Pair! Volunteers at the Casa have been working with the San Carlos and White River Apaches since 2007. They seek to provide additional income for Apache crafters through the sale of beautiful burden baskets, peridot jewelry and intricate beadwork. The sale of these crafts help to supplement the annual income of crafters who reside on reservations where the unemployment rate is 68%, and 60% of the people are living below the poverty level. Volunteers with the Apache Fair Trade Crafting Cooperative, known as AFTCO, are responsible for sales and inventory. They also share the history of the Apache people and the importance of crafting in their lives and spirituality. This year, why not fill out your Christmas list by purchasing some AFTCO crafts? Our volunteers will be selling these unique, handmade gifts on December 4 in the Hospitality Area. VISION CORNER In Giving, We Receive We are building a new church, then we will be underway with a Community Life Center. Just as we gathered together during the Capital Campaign to follow Father Joe's request to build without debt, we must be realistic about the need for operating funds to maintain the Casa's buildings and ministries. Many times in speaking with community members regarding the ongoing need for operational funds, a.k.a. Sustainability, here at the Franciscan Renewal Center, I get asked the question, "Why do you keep asking for money?" My answer is a simple one and comes directly from Scripture..."Ask and you will receive...so that your joy will be complete." I know for myself, in this process of getting to know more of our Since 1951, the Casa has been renewing lives through spiritual growth, healing and transformation, and serving others. community during the capital campaign, most of the stories involve a deep caring about this place and a desire to make sure that what we have continues for those who continue to come and find their spiritual home here. I, personally, have discovered the spiritual axiom of learning firsthand that it is in the giving that I have received. So today, I ask you to consider a gift to the sustainability of the Franciscan Renewal Center...and your joy will be complete. Once the work is finished, the Casita, which currently houses the children's program, will be taken down to make room for the new Community Life Center. Driveway and Main Entrance We have great news the new driveway is almost completed! Some of the landscaping will be done over the next month, and the front of the administration building should be visible again soon. Next, the concrete walkway will be replaced from the arch to the front door. We anticipate the front doors will reopen in early December. The New Church of Our Lady of the Angels Installation of the stucco surface that will attach the stone of the upper part of the church will begin shortly. Skylights have been installed, and the upper roof is almost complete. Infrastructure Infrastructure work continues. The new transformer went live on November 7, and the water main is currently being installed. Plumbers are now laying out pipes to the new bathrooms. thecasa.org RENEWAL
