Social Justice through Summer Service Trips The USCCB in their document Communities of Salt and Light said: Just as the gospel tells us our lives will be judged by our response to the least of these, so too our parishes should be measured by our help for the hungry, the homeless, the troubled, and the alienated in our own community and beyond. Every summer a group of students and chaperones head out beyond the boundaries of Hull to live this charge from the USCCB. These trips are transformational times for students and chaperones as well. How do we know this? The following quotes from students who participated last year tell us: This service trip I was with a group that helped out at Boomerang s, a company that runs thrift stores to help AIDS research. My group worked on a step of the clothes donation system that I never really thought about before. The clothes, of course, don t go right to the store. Before that they go through a warehouse, which sorts, tags, and passes along the clothing. My group helped by working on this step. I will admit, it was made more difficult by the fact that we didn t get to meet with the people feeling most of the assistance, those people being the AIDS patients and the people buying from the stores, but I feel there was still an important lesson to be learned. The lesson is that sometimes, you just need to know that you are helping and you won t get to see the definitive proof. This work also taught me that somebody along the line has to do the most difficult and/or grueling tasks and sometimes one must accept these tasks. I believe that this lesson has helped me to grow in dedication to service. Aidan Leahy As we became closer with the kids, we learned more about their background. For example, some kids have been in emergency housing their entire lives, causing them to move locations constantly, making it hard to build friendships. Other kids at Bethany Hill Pace had domestic violence in their homes as they grew up, making it difficult to trust others... It was an honor to spend a week with these wonderful people, making it very hard to say goodbye when it was time to come back home. - Victoria Fuda Some of my favorite moments were getting a lecture from a boy named Will, on who was a better soccer player; Messi or Ronaldo. Or learning to play the drums on five gallon buckets. Or simply sharing lunch with these fabulous children.... I really do not know what kind of impact I had on all these children. But I can say, with certainty, that they all made an impact in my life. - Joe Meschino My buddy that week was a girl named Maya. She was a beautiful nine year old who loved gossiping with me about her boyfriend and reading with me during story time. One day she picked out the book I Want My Mommy, a story about a child who spends a day with his grandmother. In the story, the boy says it s his first day without his mom. Maya turned to me and said I ve spent a couple days without my mommy before, she left me and my family 7 days ago. My heart broke for Maya....I am not sure if Maya will remember me years from now, but I am so happy that I was able to be there to offer her light in a dark time. There is always going to be someone out there who needs your help. Just listen for God calling on you. - Lauren Saniuk Each day groups brought holy water to their worksites to sprinkle around, blessing the organizations and people they met. Not only did each group have a tremendous impact on their worksites, but we were all inspired by the people we met. - Christian Olivieri The Collaborative Parishes of Resurrection & St. Paul welcome you to a mini-retreat, entitled Finding your Greatness. VACATION BIBLE CAMP - 2017 Have you ever wondered What ancient Rome was like in the 60 sad? What was it like to sneak away from Roman guards? What games did kids play in ancient Rome? How it felt to be one of the very first Christians? The 8 th annual Vacation Bible Camp is coming very soon! This summer we will travel back in time to the very center of the Roman Empire. Saint Paul will tell stories of the challenges faced by early Christians. Games, music, arts and crafts, and snacks will fill the week with fun for children entering grades K-5 (2017-18 school year). Mark your calendar! Monday, July 17 th to Friday, July 21 st. Here at Saint Ann Church! The fun begins at 6:00PM (with drop-off 5:30-6:00) and ends at 8:00PM. Middle and high school students are invited to volunteer as camp counselors a great way to earn service hours. Adult volunteers are also needed to make this year s camp a great success. More information to come in the weeks ahead! Check out St Mary of the Assumption Facebook page for photos from last summer s camp. Dufresnay Haiti Foundation Ralph Stowe, Doreen Trahon, Rob Mortell, and the rest of the Dufresnay Haiti Foundation staff were simply amazed by how much Cathy Bowes and the CCD kids grades 1-5 doing chores around the house; and grades 6-8 the Glastonbury Abbey walk, raised to help the desperately poor people of Dufresnay Haiti and surrounding villages. They raised an incredible $2024.44. 6 Thumbs up, you all did a fantastic job. God is well pleased. With your very generous donations we will continue to develop the sewing project, the baking oven project, the fish farm in the village of Jimba, and also will be able to continue the Mobile Health Clinic that travels to 8 villages in the mountainous region of Dufresnay, Haiti. I (Rob Mortell) just wanted to share a funny little story of our April 2017 trip to Haiti. We were having a pizza party for the now 38 orphan girls when a little 4 year old came up to me and poked me in the stomach, held her hand over her mouth, and then giggled. It was so cute I just had to laugh. Kids are so honest. I guess she wasn t used to seeing people with a little extra weight on them. God Bless your very generous and compassionate hearts always.
