L I G H T O F C H R I S T C A T H O L I C S C H O O L D I V I S I O N N O. 1 6 May 2017 Principal Message Mrs. Frances Weber MAY EVENTS Sacraments of Confirmation & First Eucharist Pizza Sale World Catholic Education Day in North Battleford May is the month when we honor mothers. Mothers Day may have begun centuries ago. The fourth Sunday of Lent was once called Mothering Sunday. On this day, children visited the church where they had been baptized and offered gifts to their mother church for the new life of baptism they had received from her. Later, children brought trinkets and cakes to their own mothers, thanking them for all they had done in their children s lives. During the month of May, we recognize all mothers and express our love and reverence for them. May is also considered the month of Mary, the mother of Jesus. As we begin the month of May, we are very proud to be celebrating Catholic Education Week May 21-27. Catholic Education Week is a welcome opportunity to celebrate the Mission of our Catholic Schools as we strive to integrate the Gospel values of Jesus Christ in every aspect of the school s life and curriculum. Throughout Catholic Education Week we ask you to reflect on the significance of Catholic Education s presence and contribution in our Church and in our society. NO SCHOOL DAYS: Teacher PD May 8 Victoria Day May 22 Faith Day May 23 Stewardship Corner Thank you to Mrs. Olson for leading our students through their Sacraments of Confirmation & First Eucharist preparation. We pray Hail Mary, Full of Grace, The Lord is with thee; Blessed art thou among women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, Now and at the hour of our death. Amen

We ask parents to not send any snack or lunch items containing peanut butter, peanuts, or any other type of nut (almonds, walnuts, sesame seeds, trail mix, etc ) Please be aware of snack foods, as they need to indicate made in a peanut free facility or nut free. Please ensure if your child(ren) has peanut butter for breakfast that their hands are washed thoroughly and teeth are brushed before coming to school. Thank you for your understanding. start until then. Provincial Winners for Remembrance Day Congratulations to Lexie Jones and Maya Doucette, as their Remembrance day posters went on to the provincial level where they won second in their categories. What a great accomplishment!

Page 3 Sacrament of Confirmation & First Eucharist Congratulations to our students that are receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation and First Eucharist on May 7th! May the gifts of the Holy Spirit always inspire you! She knows firsthand that reading to children creates a special bond. She has taught pre-kindergarten to grade 12, including gifted, remedial, and English as an Alternative Language. Saskatoon is home. We are pleased to be hosting author Connie McGrath on May 2nd! Connie has written two books, In Search of a Smile and Thank You for Bringing Me. We look forward to meeting her! School Fundraisers Check out our May activities: May 5th Plaid Day Wear your plaid clothes that day. May 18th-Career Day Dress up like what you want to be when you grow up. It s $0.50 if you dress up and if you don t you pay $0.25.

Page 4 Light a Candle at Church: Let your child choose a special person to light a candle for. Dress in Purple: Explain how purple is a color of mourning but also a color of royalty Jesus the King. Write a Note to a Clergy Member: Whether it be local or farther away, have your kids choose a person to write a letter to. Maybe your kid wants to write a thank you letter. It could even be a letter asking questions about our faith. You might get a great response! Get a Fast Food Fish Sandwich: This is the one time of year that advertisers take Catholics into account. I like to support that idea by feasting on some fatty goodness. Go on a Garden Walk: Explain the story of the Garden of Gethsemane while you meander. Joy of Learning

Page 5 Hold and Secure We d like to remind parents of practices being established by our school division. Hopefully we never have a situation where we have to use them, but we all need to be aware of what will happen in case of an emergency. Hold & Secure Protective measures applied in school buildings under circumstances of security concern due to threats to school occupants from events occurring near the school. All exterior doors are locked. The regular activities in the school continue. Access to and exit from the school are controlled and monitored through effective communication with parent/guardians/caregivers. June Dates to Note Lockdown is used in a serious emergency situation where the threat is inside a school, on or very near to school property. A Lockdown minimizes access and visibility in an effort to shelter students, staff and visitors in secure locations. Similar to a Hold & Secure, all outer doors are locked; however a Lockdown requires that all students be kept in classrooms or other designated locations and that inner doors also be locked where possible. Entry to, and exit from, the building is restricted to emergency services personnel only. During a Lockdown, lights are turned off in the classroom/office, curtains/blinds are closed where possible, cell phone use is restricted and all people inside the building should remain quiet. During a Lockdown, school phones will not be answered as the administration is tending to the ongoing situation. As cell phone use is restricted, students are asked not to use phones until cleared to do so. Pizza Sale! May 16th @ Noon Orders due May 4th It s hard to believe June is right around the corner! It will be a busy month, so please note the following June days for events: June 2 nd June 7th June 9 th June 20th June 28 June 28 June 30 BBQ & Heritage Hoopla at the Museurm Track and Field in Medstead (This will be a K Day) Grade 4-6 Ball Tournament Year End Mass at 10:30 AM Awards Day at 12:30 PM, Early Dismissal Last Day of School Report Card Pick Up
