Frank Bognanno Parish Office Hours Monday Friday: 8:00 am 5:00 pm Mass in Spanish/Misa en Español Los Domingos Sunday: 3:15 pm Friday: 6:00 pm I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. I don t know how many times I ve said these words: hundreds certainly. And how many times have we heard them? Our lives of faith begin with these words, and every time we witness the baptism of another Christian, whether it s a baby at Mass or just after, or a grown up at the great Vigil of Easter, we re taken back to that first moment of ours. We were claimed by the Sign of the Cross, and we were named: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. When we were born we were named by another, usually our parents. And that s important. Our parents had a relationship which preceded us came before us and that relationship was precisely what brought us into being. Their relationship took on a life of it s own, and that life took flesh in us and in our siblings. That s why one of the best models or images of the Holy Trinity is the family: a husband and a wife and a child are importantly one thing (a family), and three distinct persons. Of course the analogy limps; a family is not one in quite the same way that God is One, but it shows us how it s possible for something to be both one and many at the same time. Whenever we talk about the Trinity we lapse quickly into the language of myth and metaphor and poetry. That shouldn t surprise us. The most important things we talk about: life, death, delight, depression, love, pain, hopes, dreams these are all shrouded in myth and metaphor and poetry too, but they point to an important truth, often a truth even deeper than the words themselves can convey. Try describing the love you have for the people you love most in the world the words fail pretty quickly, don t they? Now try describing the greatest love the world has ever known the words won t even come close. But that s no reason not to use them. No, people will keep writing love songs and telling sweet stories and jotting down secret poems to their beloved until the end of time even though the words always fail. That s why we too have to keep trying, however poorly, to tell people about the love that has so moved us the love that s made all the difference in our lives the Love that made Life itself. And that s why Jesus words today are not only for the apostles and their successors. He s not just talking to the priests and the deacons, even though we re the ordinary ones who baptize. We re all called to lead people to the Love that moves mountains and molds hearts, and therefore Christ s command is for each of us: Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."
