*introduce your One video Who s Your One? John 1:35-51 February 24, 2019 INTRODUCTION: It is in this passage that we find the first words spoken by our Lord Jesus in the Gospel according to John. In v.38, what do you seek? He did not ask them whom they were seeking, but what they were seeking. R.C.H. Lenski: This first word spoken by Jesus (in John s gospel) is a master question. It bids them look searchingly at their inmost longings and desires A hidden promise lies in the question, What are you seeking? Jesus has the highest treasure any man can seek, longs to direct our seeking toward that treasure in order that He may bestow it for our everlasting enrichment. It is also in this passage that John records the call of Jesus first disciples to salvation. We have the privilege of reading the brief account of John, Andrew, Simon Peter, Philip, and Nathanael s salvation experiences. The very heart of the Gospel of John is magnified in John 20:31, But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. 1

Just before we view the accounts of the disciples conversions, note John the Baptist s affirmation of God s solution for our sins. John 1:29, The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! All through Israel s history God had revealed clearly that sin and separation from Him could be removed by blood sacrifices. No forgiveness of sin could be granted by God apart from an acceptable substitute dying as a sacrifice. Now, God had sent the Lamb. The Lamb of God foreshadows Jesus ultimate sacrifice on the cross for the sin of the world. takes away the sin of the world here it refers to humanity in general, to all people without distinction, transcending all national, racial, and ethnic boundaries. Jesus sacrifice is sufficient for all people without distinction. 1 John 2:2, And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. Though His sacrificial death is sufficient for the sins of everyone, it is only effective for those who savingly believe in Him. As a result of Who He is, and What He has done, we can invite others. 1. To Christ. 2. To Church. 3. To Community (Small groups) 2

*J.D. Greer s video Who s Your One I. JOHN THE BAPTIST S INTRODUCTION. 35-37 He introduced his disciple to the Lord Jesus. John was the forerunner. John 1:7-9, This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world. John 1:30-34, This is He of whom I said, After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me. I did not know Him; but that He should be revelaed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water. And John bore witness, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God. II. JESUS INVITATION TO JOHN AND ANDREW. 39 John 1:39, He said to them, Come and see. They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour). 1 John 1:1-3, That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have 3

handled, concerning the Word of life the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. III. ANDREW S INVITATION TO HIS BROTHER. 41-42 Family members should be concerned about their family Brother brings brother Andrew is mentioned 3 times in the scriptures and each time he is seen bringing someone to Jesus 1. Andrew brings Simon 2. Andrew brings a young boy (feeding of the 5,000) 3. Andrew brings some Greeks (John 12:20-22) SPECIAL NOTE: A number of commentators believe the Greek text suggests that John also found his brother James shortly afterward. When Jesus met Simon, he called him Cephas (stone). Jesus has a penetrating, omniscient look that not only sees who you are but who you can become. Give Me your life, and I will make you what you have it in you to be. William Barclay 4

Once someone came upon Michelangelo chipping away with his chisel at a huge, shapeless piece of rock. He asked the sculptor what he was doing. I m releasing the angel imprisoned in this marble. Jesus knows and sees Actualities and Possibilities *Jenna s One video IV. JESUS INVITATION TO PHILIP. 43 What a reminder that there are, indeed, searching hearts, but thank God for the Seeking Savior! The others were introduced to Christ by others, but Philip comes as Jesus takes the initiative. In any case, whoever initiates the contact, those who come to Christ do so only because Christ first sought them. John 6:44, No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. V. PHILIP S INVITATION TO NATHANAEL. 45 A friend brings a friend. One lighted torch serves to light another. Godet A. HE USED THE SCRIPTURES. 45 B. HE FACED SKEPTICISM. 46 5

C. HE WAS HELPED BY THE SAVIOR. 47-50 VI. JESUS EXPLANATION OF HIMSELF. 51 Jesus carries Nathanael back to the Gen. 28 account to the night of Jacob s conversion and reminded him of Jacob s ladder, which linked earth and heaven. I am that ladder. I link God and man, heaven and earth. I am the One and only mediator between God and man, the only link between heaven and earth. 1 Timothy 2:5, For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus CONCLUSION: We ought to invite others to the Body of Christ, His Church, that has been entrusted with His Gospel. 85-90% will come because of your invitation! 6
