T h e S p i r e July 2018 Sharing in the Gospel I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. Philippians 1:3-5 As spring concludes and school ends, the anticipation of summer increases. Who doesn t love summer with no school, summer vacation, warm weather, and time in the great outdoors? Every year, I look forward to the altered routine and feeling of open-ended freedom, but quickly life becomes disconnected. We are not even to the end of June, but I already feel out of touch from the fellowship of the church. There is a subtle often unnoticed spiritual connection within God between the people of God bound by the Holy Spirit. This communion with God and one another through Christ is vital to the fullness of faith. Without it, our spiritual lives are incomplete. I most fully notice the difference in this spiritual connection as it slowly dissipates because of the busyness and fragmented reality of summer. Do you notice such a spiritual connection with God and the people of God? As stated earlier, it s subtle, but necessary for the fullness of faith and wisdom. In the above passage from Philippians, Paul speaks of this communal connection as he continually gives thanks for the people of Philippi and their sharing in the gospel, This word translated into sharing has a strong communal connection together with one another and with the very gospel of God. It s hard to underestimate this communion. It can be translated into a oneness of life together and a oneness with the gospel that creates a spiritual cohesion. Later in Philippians this word appears again as Paul talks of sharing in one mind with Christ together. This spiritual cohesion and communion with God, as the body of Christ together, is almost completely lost in today s society and today s church. We live in a fragmented reality that keeps our lives at an arm s length from one another (and from God). In fact, if our lives get to close, it begins to feel like a burden hampering our so-called freedom and independence. Churches often don t have a sense of being a people together nor a cohesion that makes the spiritual life more possible. To me, this also limits are ability to truly understand the gospel, discover wisdom and direction from God, and live the abundant life of Christ. However, throughout scripture this communion reality with God and each other is a central component to a truly spiritual life. There is something enticing about the so called freedom of possibility with no strings attached. The lure of summer gets me every year. However, there is more fullness to life found in a true sharing life together with God. I am thankful for summer. I do enjoy this time of year, but I am also thankful for the reminder that this fragmented, disconnected reality of summer is not what I desire most. So like Paul in his letter to the Philippians, I am thankful for you and the life of sharing in the gospel together. I pray that we continue, as the people of God, to find our life through sharing in the gospel together. A BLESSING FOR CUMC As she battled physical issues, one of the things Rose Borman missed a lot was being able to attend Sunday services at her home church, Centenary United Methodist Church. An active member of many years, Rose missed seeing familiar faces every Sunday. As a gift to their mother, family members offered to install equipment at CUMC which would provide live streaming of Sunday services. This has proven to be a blessing, not only to Rose, but to others who are unable to attend service in person. You can access a live service through our website, www.centenaryevansville.com, at 9:35am each Sunday morning. Archived services are also available there. Services are also available through a ROKU channel. So now you can watch services on TV! We are very grateful to the family of Rose Borman for making this wonderful service available to Centenary United Methodist Church. It has already been a blessing to many! ~ ~SCRIP~ ~SCRIP... Scrip cards are a safe and secure way to pay for summer travel. There are many hotel, airline, cruise, and transportation types available. These include: Hilton (2%), Hotels.com (6%), Airbnb (5%), American Airlines (6%), Delta (4%), Southwest (4%), Carnival (8%), Princess Cruises (6%), Avis (8%), Budget (8%), and Uber (3%). New cards in stock are Discover $100 (1.25%) and Burlington $25 (8%). We appreciate your support of the local restaurants, as they give back 10% to Centenary. Some of these are: Gracies, Hacienda, Los Bravos, Los Tres Caminos, Culvers, Merry Go Round, and Donut Bank. GD Ritzy's gives back 15%. Come by the coffee room after church and browse the many cards we have in stock or pre-order for your travel needs. We want to thank the members of Sharon Hollon s sewing class for the many chemo bags they made. Our son, Tim, used this kind of bag during his treatments, so we know how important they are. They have been delivered to Hematology/Oncology on Epworth Road, and were much appreciated! Thanks so much! McCutchan Family The following thank you note was received from Jill Kincaid of Chemo Buddies, Epworth Rd., Newburgh, IN: Dear Centenary UMC & Mrs. Hollon s Sewing Class, Thank you so much for your donation of chemo ball bags in memory of Tim McCutchan. Your gift will allow chemo patients to move freely at home and elsewhere while receiving treatment. Such support and comfort is truly appreciated. Thank you again. Sincerely, Jill Kincaid

Meet Georgia s Girls! When newcomers hear people talk about Georgia s Girls, they often wonder just who that is! So I asked the leader of this group, Shirley Woods, to introduce them to you. Our Prayer Shawl Ministry was started in June 2009 at the home of Georgia Bryant. Georgia was recovering from a bout with colon cancer. She invited a group of friends with the goal of organizing a prayer shawl committee. We began to learn/relearn handcraft skills, mostly crocheting and knitting but included other ideas. Some friends came for friendship, fellowship, prayer, and devotions and were a part of the group even though they were not able to participate in the handwork. There were about a dozen friends who initially formed our group. We received strength and encouragement as Georgia was passionate and persistent that our group continue. We traveled with her through her journey of living with cancer. She would stitch on prayer shawls while receiving chemotherapy treatments. Georgia died in March 2011. We meet every Monday 11:30am to 2:30pm at the church in Nancy McCutchan s Sunday School classroom. We welcome anyone who wants to join us (even men)! Feel free to bring a lunch. If you can t come to our meetings but would like to be a part of making prayer shawls, please let us know. We need you! Yarn and any other supplies are donated and will be supplied to you. Most of our prayer shawls are crocheted, but we welcome other ideas. Our emblem is sewn on each prayer shawl. This was designed by Katherine Sharp and consists of a G (for Georgia) with wings. An identification label created for Georgia s Girls is attached. Special cards created by Martha Freeman accompany each prayer shawl. It is very important to us that anyone who would be comforted by a prayer shawl be given one. We believe this is our tangible expression of caring, to provide a feeling of warmth, peace and comfort. Out of love and faith we continue this ministry. We try to give a prayer shawl for new babies, graduates, celebrations, illness, bereavement and any events that require comforting. Please contact any member of our group if you know of anyone who is in need of a prayer shawl. Contact members are Nancy McCutchan, Alene Taylor, Carolyn Browning, Phyllis Cox, Barbara Marchand, Janet Resler, Joan Crowe, Martha Freeman, and Shirley Woods. Contributed by Shirley Woods The We Care Committee also meets in conjunction with Georgia s Girls. This group sends cards to the sick and bereaved. They also acknowledge the birthdays and wedding anniversaries within the church. They, too, are dedicated to making the people of our church body feel loved, appreciated, and always remembered. THANK YOU for all you do! Habitat for Humanity is a well-known international, non-governmental, non-profit organization that builds simple, decent, and affordable housing, a self-described Christian housing ministry and has addressed the subject of poverty housing all over the world. CUMC is a participant in the 2018 Methodist Build for Evansville Habitat; our goal was to raise $1000.00. Per Steve Hopkins, our Habitat representative, Centenary has given a total of $2085.00 in April and May. Money may be given any time of the year, but for it to contribute to the 2018 Methodist Build, it needs to be given by July 31st. When construction begins and a family is named, we will let you know. Thanks, Steve, for the update on this very important project! McCutchan Family A merry heart does good, like medicine.. Prov. 17:22 Did you hear about the preacher who woke up one Sunday morning and said, I just can t go this morning. So he called his assistant and said, I need you to preach today. Then he packed his golf bags in his car and drove to another city where no one would recognize him. He teed off from the first hole, and just as he did, the wind caught his ball and carried it an extra 100 yards, straight into the hole. An angel who was watching it all, turned to God and said, Why did you do that? God just smiled and said, Who s he going to tell? A special thank you to Matt s Turf & More for the gift of our church lawn treatment!
