Church of the Holy Spirit 16 South 6th Street, New Hyde Park, New York 11040 April 17th 2016 - Fourth Sunday of Easter Jesus said: My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father s hand. The Father and I are one. -John 10:27-30

PASTOR S PAGE My Dear Friends, Last week I wrote about how John Hogan is well on his way to being ordained a deacon, and how much he has accomplished along the way. This week I want to point out how supportive our two Deacons are to me, and how well they support our Parish. As a Priest is ordained to help serve the Bishop, a Deacon is ordained to help serve the Pastor. Deacon Doug helps me in several capacities. First, he is the Director of CYO. Deacon Doug basically oversees the entire program, with the help of a coordinator for each sport. He is well organized and knows how to follow through. He keeps the program going. In fact, without him we probably would not have a CYO program. I will ask him, within the next couple of weeks, to write a column in the bulletin to acknowledge all leaders of CYO. In addition to this, he and Deacon Lachlan help me with the training and coordination of the Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist and the Parish Lectors. He helps me with Baptisms, preaches, and is such a tremendous support to me. Deacon Doug is affirming and very trustworthy. He is a parish Deacon, he is a parishioner, and he is a friend. Although Deacon Lachlan doesn t like titles; he is like having a chief of staff. He oversees all parish business, attends all major meetings, is a voice of reason and I include him in all major decisions. He brings a sense of experience and wisdom to everything he does. He loves this Parish, and he is loyal. He truly loves being a Deacon and it shows in everything he does. As I was busy with parish and diocesan commitments, he basically coordinated all of our Holy Week Masses and liturgies. Although he prefers to be behind the scenes, his fingerprints are on everything. Deacon Lachlan is a main reason why we are doing so well as a Parish. Our two Deacons: Doug and Lachlan, are fully serving the people of Holy Spirit Parish. We are truly blessed to have them. Every single parishioner, by virtue of our Baptism and Confirmation, is called to service. God has something wonderful planned for us. All we need to do is respond. Through God s grace, all of us, Bishop, Priest, Deacon and Laity, has a place in the Church. God has something for us to do. Through God s grace, may we continue to work together, as a parish, to live the gospel and build the Church. Thanks and God Bless. Fr. Grieco -2-

DEACON LACHLAN Today is World Day of Prayer for Vocations. It is sometimes called Good Shepherd Sunday where we listen to the Gospel of John, and where Jesus describes us as His sheep, and tells us that He will take care of us. It is a very beautiful and comforting passage to hear. In World Day of Prayer for Vocations we are praying that more men and women will hear God s call to serve His sheep through vocations to the priesthood, the diaconate and to the consecrated life. Last week I visited the mission our diocese supports in the Dominican Republic. Here are two pictures from that trip. The first is from a visit we made to the Missionaries of Charity, Mother Teresa s order of sisters, who run an orphanage near our mission. They are pictured with Deacon Vinnie Barreca from Resurrection parish in Farmingville. These women are a powerful example of a vocation to the consecrated life. They work tirelessly caring for the more than 40 children who are in their care. There are varying circumstances surrounding the placing of these children with the sisters, but each of them is shown unconditional love by these beautiful examples of the Good Shepherd at work among us. ( We did ask them if there was an upper height limit.most of them are around 5 feet tall they loved the joke!) The other picture shows Msgr John Cervini with the group of deacons who visited with me. (I m hiding back row, center). Padre Juan, as the locals know him, has spent the last 20 years working among some of the poorest people in the Western Hemisphere. He has been able to help them tremendously, thanks to the generosity of the people of our diocese. He and his helpers are amazed at the level of assistance they receive. Padre Juan (a native of Floral Park) is returning to Long Island in June. Although he has reached the official retirement age for priests, he will continue to help out in parishes around the diocese. Another great example of the Good Shepherd at work. So we see consecrated women at work, a priest, and now I should mention the deacons. A group of us visit each year, help with baptisms in the mountain villages, and when we come back home, we raise money by visiting parishes and making an appeal. That s where the generosity of the laity comes in. Your support gives Padre Juan the tools he needs to do so much for his flock. week, but we have only Fr. Grieco assigned to our parish. He is pictured here with some of the least fortunate of his sheep. And this is where the story becomes sad. We don t know yet if it will be possible to replace Msgr John when he leaves in June. We are beginning to experience a shortage of priests here in our diocese. As you are well aware, here at Holy Spirit, Father Grieco is on his own. We have been fortunate to have help from some other priests, particularly Father Irinel, who has been helping every This World Day of Prayer for Vocations, we need to ask ourselves what we can do to increase the numbers of men and women being called? Obviously prayer most important but another important piece is encouragement. When we see young men and women (and not so young) whom we feel may have a vocation we must encourage them. That is part of the process of discernment for many someone else telling them that they may have a vocation. Very often men and women struggle with the call..afraid to say Yes.because they feel unworthy. Remind them, we are none of us worthy but God calls us because. as Jesus tells us in the Gospel today..he knows us. May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen -3-
