PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ As I spoke about at the Masses last weekend, Bishop Manz (our vicar for Vicariate IV) has asked me to serve as the administrator of St. Maria Gore Parish and School in Schiller Park, while con nuing to serve as pastor of St. Beatrice. This new assignment will begin on July 1, 2019. There is much that will need to be worked out in the coming months, and not everything will be wrapped up by July 1 st, because a transi on of this magnitude will take me. As I men oned, we will s ll be two parishes a er July 1 st, but because we will be sharing one pastor, in many ways we will need to operate as one parish. For now, the biggest change on the horizon will be the new weekend Mass schedule. As I explained in my talk, I will be the only priest assigned to two parishes, and while I might have some weekend priest help (that is s ll uncertain), there is no guarantee that I will have help on every weekend of the year. So, the new Mass schedule will need to be designed to not only be as fair as possible for both parishes, but to also be something that I can realis cally do on my own when necessary. Please be prepared that Mass mes will change, and the number of Masses celebrated at each parish site will decrease. I know that this is not ideal, but there is simply no way around this. The en re Archdiocese is feeling the effects of the significant shortage of priests. But as we look to the future, let us also be mindful of the present. As we progress in our Lenten journey, I always like to remind everyone that one important aspect of Lent at the parish level is the Rite of Chris an Ini a on of Adults (RCIA). During Lent, all RCIA catechumens and candidates take part in their final prepara ons for the Easter sacraments. For the catechumens (the unbap zed), they undergo three Scru nies, which take place on the 3 rd, 4 th and 5 th Sundays of Lent. The purpose of the Scru nies is to help them examine their hearts so that they can iden fy and acknowledge their sins that will be washed away at their bap sm. Our parish s RCIA catechumen, Heather Cowieson, will par cipate in the three Scru nies over the next three weekends, so please pray for her during this important me. The Scru nies will take place at the 10:00am Mass this Sunday, and the 12:00pm Mass on March 31 st and April 7 th. And actually, I referred to Heather as a catechumen, but she is actually now referred to as an elect. That is because last Sunday, March 17 th, Heather par cipated in the Rite of Elec on at Holy Name Cathedral. At this ceremony, she and RCIA catechumens and candidates from around the Archdiocese were officially elected by Cardinal Cupich to receive the sacraments of ini a on at the Easter Vigil. Below are photos from the Rite of Elec on; the le one is of Heather gree ng the Cardinal, and the right one is of me, Heather, her sponsor Larry, and our RCIA catechist, Mirusia Michalowski. Please pray for Heather as she draws closer to becoming a full member of the Catholic Church. St. Beatrice, pray for us. May God bless you. Fr. Rob
Third Sunday of Lent In today s Gospel Jesus is quite clear in his message: bear fruit or be cut down. This Lent we are called to cultivate and fertilize our spiritual lives through prayer, fastening and almsgiving. Through your almsgiving you are performing a good work; far greater than you think. Know that your nickel, dime or quarter is multiplied by the coins place by others in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box. During Lent, find: Sanctus, Sanctus (Holy, Holy), #178, Page #200 Lord s Prayer, #27, Page #32 Agnus Dei (Lamb of God), #183, Page#202 The Knights of Columbus is the largest Catholic fraternal organization in the world with almost two million members in over 1,600 parishes. Ave Maria council is blessed with Pastor s at St. Beatrice and St. Gertrude s who support the Knights. Our council is growing with a wonderful group of various ages and talent. We invite you to come join us and share your special gift for Jesus. All practicing Catholic men are welcome. PAGE THREE TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Hollywood has given us an image of Moses slipping off his shoes before a burning bush. God has just called Moses by name, and so that Moses doesn t miss the meaning of this breakthrough in human history, God requires that all barriers to the experience be eliminated. If you ve ever tried to maneuver barefoot across hot sand, or pick your way along a rocky beach, you know how sensitive feet can be. Within the Church, there are religious orders with a custom of going barefoot, not merely to show poverty, but to be an outward sign of a desire for connection with creation, a desire to go through life alert to what God is doing. In early days, when reconciliation was a onceinalifetime possibility, penitents often went barefoot for a long period of time as a sign of their conversion. Even today, people follow an ancient practice of slipping off their shoes to walk in the procession to the cross on Good Friday. It is striking that the first use of our newlyscrubbed feet from Holy Thursday night is to walk resolutely in the footsteps of Christ to the cross. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. What We re Learning 3 rd Grade We learned about Ordinary Time in the Liturgical Year of the Church. Ordinary Time is celebrated between the Christmas and Lent Seasons and between the Easter season and Advent. We learned that Ash Wednesday is coming soon and it is the season of reflection that we ask God to prepare us. 4 th Grade We reviewed the Ten Commandments, Ash Wednesday, and Palm Sunday. We read the story of Jesus first miracle at the Wedding at Cana. At the wedding Jesus changed water into wine. 5 th Grade We learned that Lent is a time for reflection and self-denial. We are called to spend time in prayer and to reflect on our lives and what we can do to be better disciples of Jesus. Self-denial helps us to focus on God and can also help us to focus on others especially when we use it to help someone else.
