Collect: Father, as we celebrate this season of thanksgiving We give thanks for the blessings of food, provision and nourishment. Please grow in us a harvest for the world. Come sow a seed of hope within our souls Lord, that we might yield goodness, patience and kindness in abundance. Sow a seed of peace in our lives Lord, that we might bear the fruits of forgiveness, compassion and righteousness. Come sow a seed of love in our hearts Lord, that others would reap the blessings of family, friendship and community. May each seed of hope, peace and love grow within us into a harvest that can be feasted on by all. Amen. A Reading from Genesis (3. 1-7) N ow the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God say, 'You shall not eat from any tree in the garden'?" [2] The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; [3] but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.' " [4] But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not die; [5] for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." [6] So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate. [7] Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God
Psalm 34.4-10 I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. [5] Look to him, and be radiant; so your faces shall never be ashamed. [6] This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord, and was saved from every trouble. [7] The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. A Reading from Galatians (5.22-6.5) [8] O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. [9] O fear the Lord, you his holy ones, for those who fear him have no want. [10] The young lions suffer want and hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. B y contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, [23] gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. [24] And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. [25] If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. [26] Let us not become conceited, competing against one another, envying one another. [6:1] My friends, if anyone is detected in a transgression, you who have received the Spirit should restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. Take care that you yourselves are not tempted. [2] Bear one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. [3] For if those who are nothing think they are something, they deceive themselves. [4] All must test their own work; then that work, rather than their neighbor's work, will become a cause for pride. [5] For all must carry their own loads. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke (22.39-47) Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ He came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him. [40] When he reached the place, he said to them, "Pray that you may not come into the time of trial." [41] Then he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and prayed, [42] "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done." [43] Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength. [44] In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground. [45] When he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief, [46] and he said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial." [47] While he was still speaking, suddenly a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him; For the gospel of the Lord Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ The New Revised Standard Version (Anglicized Edition), copyright 1989, 1995 by the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. The Fourth Sunday after Epiphany Sunday 3 rd February 2019 Jeremiah 1.4-10 Psalm 71.1-6 1 Corinthians 13.1-1 Luke 4.21-30 Sometimes the truth that God tells us through his word can be difficult for us to bear. Jesus told a difficult truth to the Jews in the Synagogue in his hometown. Deep within his message was the truth that God s love is for everyone and not just for the Jews demonstrated by his acts of healing and mercy to gentiles in difficult times. Today we can rest assured that, as surely as God formed us in the womb and knew us, he has a love for us that breaks down all barriers. Pray that God might break down the barriers of prejudice in our lives that we might show his love to all we meet. Give thanks for the Church of North India, remembering especially today their ministry in a predominantly non-christian context. OFFERTRY ONLINE 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. This passage provides a good roadmap of how to be good stewards of our loving relationships.
