PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 20, 2018 A note from Father Tom PENTECOST! From that historical moment of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit which we celebrate to this day in which we pray that we be open and the Holy Spirit come, God has made divine power and our salvation known! Rivers of living water will flow from within him who believes in me (John 7: 38) That power and salvation which God reveals is meant for us, and meant to flow through and from us who believe. This weekend we welcome Christian Cortes to our parish family. I look forward to sharing these weeks of life and ministry with him. One person discerning the call to ordained ministry and sharing those gifts which are his, gifts being formed for such ministry for our sake can, indeed, become water for our thirst. We, in turn, can become food for the strength that God will ask of him. Christian, welcome! On this great Solemnity of Pentecost I also would like to highlight and pray for those who are sharing in our pilot experience of Alpha. This experience of faith sharing and evangelization is an initiative that was embraced by the Parish Council after considering the needs of our parish and community and the several formats out there that we might use. I do believe that it has been a positive and fruitful experience to date. On this feast when we celebrate the Gifts of the Holy Spirit I invite you to pray for this group who are praying for and preparing to serve us all in the seasons to come! And on this extraordinary day, I want to thank the young people and the adults who have journeyed with them in our Edge and LifeTeen communities. May the gifts you are discovering be gifts that will grow within in and gifts that you will continue to share. And our Loretto crew See you for our summer week! To us all, Peace be with you! (John 20: 21) Fr. Tom Obligatory Memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church A notification from the Church s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments has clarified that the new Obligatory Memorial of the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, must be celebrated in the Ordinary form of the Roman Rite Beginning this year. The new feast is to be observed on the Monday following Pentecost which, this year is Monday, May 21, 2018. The new feast was inserted into the Universal Calendar of the Latin Church earlier this year by Pope Francis, in a decree dated February 11, 2018 the 160th anniversary of the apparition of Mary at Lourdes. The title of Mother of the Church was famously bestowed on the Blessed Virgin Mary by Blessed Pope Paul VI during the Second Vatican Council. The understanding of Mary s motherhood has developed in the decades following Vatican II, especially as the Church has reflected on the Councils teaching about Mary in chapter of the Dogmatic Constitution of the Church. (Lumen Gentium) We welcome the opportunity to share in the Church s celebration of this memorial of our Lady on Monday morning May 21st at 8:00am.
