Bible Text & Context: Mark 12:41-44 In today s Bible story, Jesus and disciples, along with the daily crowds that were at the Temple, were watching the people coming and going at the offering banks. Some would make a big show of the amount of money they were giving (that is why people watched). They would count out stacks of dollars or large heavy bags of coins and drop them with a loud BANG! As people ooouu d and aaahhh d about the show, Jesus pointed out an older widow discretely walking up to the offering coffers and she dropped in two copper coins, a very, very small amount. She then quickly moved off. Jesus told the watching disciples that from heaven s eyes, this woman gave the biggest gift of any today. Confused and in the dark by the offering of a few cents, Jesus turned on the light. Everyone else gave from their surplus and wealth, but the widow gave all that she possessed. Her gift was truly a sacrifice. Perhaps God is more impressed with the heart of the gift than the size of the gift. Perhaps how much we keep for ourselves is a barometer of how much we really trust our Heavenly Father, who sends only good and perfect gifts from above. Let s strive to show our faith in our Father, each and every pay check.

God gave Daniel a very unusual gift or talent, the ability to understand and interpret another person's dreams. God used Daniel and his unique gift only a couple of times in Daniel's life, but at very important moments in Israel's (Daniel's people's) history. In this story, God used Daniel's talent to help King Nebuchadnezzar to interpret and understand a dream that God was telling the king to repent, to stop doing wrong things, and start being kind and merciful to the poor. Small Candies ii. Large Storage Jar iii. Small Storage Jar c. Lesson: i. (Start lesson off with both jars hidden; either behind a table or under a cloth or something of the sort.) ii. Who here today enjoys treasure? (1) Have any of you ever received money for your birthday? (2) Raise your hand if you've ever gotten paid to do something. (3) How about get an allowance? (4) So pretty much all of you have had some sort of treasure at some point, right? (5) Well, you are exactly right. (6) Money is a type of treasure and it's what most of us think of when we think about treasure. iii. Today, I have a different type of treasure (1) and I'm sure you will all agree that this is a treasure even though it's not money! (2) [Take out the big storage jar.] Let's say that this big jar of candy represents all of the treasure that I have. [Reach in and pull out about half of the candy in the jar; a very noticeable amount, and more than the small jar contains.]
pg 7 of 13 (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) (h) If someone asked me for some candy and this is how much I gave them, [Put the pile on the table - Use a big and excitable voice!] would you agree that I was very generous with my treasure? WOW! I would also agree! That's A LOT of my treasure. Well, let's take a look at someone else's treasure. (3) [Pull out the small storage jar.] (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) Let's say that this is another person's treasure and this jar represents all of their treasure. There isn't nearly as much as there is in my treasure jar? Right? Well, let's say that someone was to ask this person to share some of their treasure and this is all they gave them. Empty out the contents of the jar until it is empty. [It would be good to have two separate piles on the table showing the big difference between what the two people gave.] (4) Now, my first question is which of these two piles is more, this pile or this pile? Of course, the person who supplied the big pile gave more! (5) Now, my next question is (c) who gave ALL they had? That's right! If this candy right here represents all of the treasure that this person had, then they gave all that they had because this little jar is now empty! (6) So this is my last question. Which one of these people was more generous? (7) As we've been learning,
pg 8 of 13 (c) (d) (e) everything that we have comes from God. That includes our treasure So whether you have a lot, or a little, God wants us to know that it's not how much you give, but the heart behind what you give. (8) The person that gave all that they had from their treasure was more generous because they gave ALL that they had. (c) But, we don't give from our treasure because we have to. We should all seek God and do what we feel like God wants us to do. because iv. Let s read our Lesson In A Sentence together... 9. Today s BIG Ideas (Cue #104) (1 minute) a.
