Revelation 20:1-3 "And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season." 7 Luke 10:19 Jesus used snakes and scorpions figuratively to refer to evil spirits that serve the Devil. 8 SEALS Revelation 7:1-8 God s people marked with a seal on their forehead. Background for this is Ezekiel 9:3-4 Revelation 13:16-17 ~ Followers of the wicked beast from the earth are marked on the forehead. In Revelation there are two kinds of people: both have a mark - some with God s mark and some with the beast s mark. Ephesians 1:13; 2 Corinthians 1:22 ~ all believers are sealed with the Holy Spirit. 9
Look at the sharp distinction between God s people and those who do not have His seal. Exodus 8:22-24 = Flies in all of Egypt... but not in the land of Goshen. Exodus 9:25-26 = Hail (with fire mingled with it) throughout all the land of Egypt... but not in the land of Goshen. 10 Death Seekers Revelation 9:5-6 Torment 5 Months Suicide... Worse than any wound is the wish to die and yet not be able to do so. (first century B.C. poet) When life closes in closing in elements: ***extreme pain ***awareness that God intended their pain to call them to repentance... but they refused to do so. (cf Exodus 8:32, Revelation 9:20-21) Believe in Jesus before it is too late! 11 Description of the Locusts: Revelation 9:7-9 IMAGES LIKE: SYMBOL OF/ SIGNIFIES: Horses - Insurgency Gold Crowns - Invincible Men s Faces - Intelligence Women s Hair - Inviting Lion s Teeth - Inescapable Iron Breastplates - Insensitive Sound of Wings - Inescapable Scorpion Tails with Stingers - Injurious Romans 1:24-28ff God gave them up to a reprobate mind. What I really want is what I will end up with; that is what I will receive! 12
Interpreting Revelation 6-9: VIEWS Preterist = John describing events of his own time [locusts are Parthian warriors (from the east), shot poison-tipped arrows, and wore long flowing locks]. Futurist = John was describing future events to be filled during the end time surrounding the glorious return of Jesus Christ {locusts are satanically motivated (demonic) forces yet to arise against forces of good and God}. 13 Interpreting Revelation 6-9: VIEWS Historist = A forecast of centuries of Christian history, from John s time until the final consummation, during which God s people will struggle with hostile opposition (but with a divine promise of ultimate victory): locusts are those that hate or despise Christians and treat them harshly. Idealist = Not a single or specific historical event, but an imagery of symbolic portrayals of the ongoing conflict of God (and His kingdom) versus Satan (and his powers of evil): locusts are evil people controlled by Satan. 14 The Demonic King Abaddon ~ a bad don Hebrew for destruction {a synonym for Sheol (the place of the dead)} cf Job 26:6 and Proverbs 15:11 Apollyon ~ Greek for destroyer 15
The opposite of blessed. WOE horror and disaster give a good sense of what the biblical word warned. Prophets Jeremiah (22:13, 18) and Amos (5:18) delivered woe oracles asking people to mourn because of the disaster God was bringing on the unrepentant. Jesus pronounced woes on the unrepentant people of His day (Matthew 11:21; 23:1-32). The pronouncement of woe was meant as a motivation/ opportunity to repent while there was still time. 16 So what now? What do we do this week concerning the punishment that is designed to encourage repentance? Who do you know that is without Jesus? 17 TO GOD BE THE GLORY AND HONOR AND POWER AND PRAISE! 18
