Hebrews 9:6-15 In the first 5 verses we took a look at the tabernacle and its furnishings. We looked at how the shadows and types of this earthly sanctuary has its reality in Heaven and truly in Jesus. We saw that the tabernacle was to be a place for God to dwell but since God is Spirit and exists outside of His creation, God manifested Himself as a cloud that hovered (sat?) over the mercy seat of the ark of the covenant. Much of the rest of chapter 9 concerns contrasts between the earthly and the heavenly, between the material and spiritual and certainly between in insufficient and the sufficient or the Ok and the best, between the old and the new and certainly between the former and now the last, Let s try to see the flow: Hebrews 9:6-10 NKJV Now when these things had been thus prepared, the priests always went into the first part of the tabernacle, performing the services. (7) But into the second part the high priest went alone once a year, not without blood, which he offered for himself and for the people's sins committed in ignorance; (8) the Holy Spirit indicating this, that the way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was still standing. (9) It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the conscience (10) concerned only with foods and drinks, various washings, and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation. Once again, the author takes us back to the Tabernacle. Having taken us into the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies where all of the furnishings were copies of the heavenly realities, he now explains how it was used. He tells us that the way into the presence of God was limited to the High Priest and that just once a year on the Great Day of Atonement. But it was just a symbol, not then because to the Israelites, it was the real thing, with its services, rituals and ordinances But it was a symbol or picture of something for us today. NEXT: Hebrews 9:11-15 NKJV But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. (12) Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. (13) For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, (14) how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? So, here is the contrast: Jesus, the Christ is the High Priest of good things to come. He entered the real tabernacle (and not the copy on earth) with His own blood and as the perfect sacrifice which accomplished so much more! He obtained eternal redemption and He did this once for all, never to be repeated. And He cleansed our consciences from the guilt of sin and of dead works. Page 1

The last portions of the chapter (which I won t read this morning), again takes up comparisons and contrasts. The author compares The Old Covenant and the New Covenants and sees them as testaments (meaning a will, a contract). Each of these involved a death for the testament was only in force after death. Death meant blood; the blood of animals was used for atonement and was sprinkled on the tabernacle and its furnishings as well as the people this for purification. This fulfilled Leviticus 17:11: Leviticus 17:11 NKJV For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.' Even the heavenly things must be purified with better sacrifices, so to speak. For Christ entered heaven to appear before God the Father. But not once a year but once to bear the sins of many. And in chapter 9, the point is made: Christ enters the true tabernacle, not with the blood of bulls and goats but with His own blood, once and for all. That s the summary, now let s look at the text to understand the greatness of this True Tabernacle, with the True High Priest, who brought the Blood of a Perfect Sacrifice ALL FOR US! As we studied yesterday in Mark 2, our great Physician is every present to make a perfect diagnosis, which He heals completely AND even pays the bill for us! Now that s amazing Grace! (Hebrews 9:6 NKJV) Now when these things had been thus prepared, the priests always went into the first part of the tabernacle, performing the services. performing the services - recall that the priests had to maintain the Menorah s light and the incense so that each burned 24 hours a day. Recall that the showbread (12 loaves) was replaced each Sabbath. These items were in the Holy Place outside of the Holy of Holies and separated from it by a heavy veil. (Hebrews 9:7 NKJV) But into the second part the high priest went alone once a year, not without blood, which he offered for himself and for the people's sins committed in ignorance; This second-part, the Holy of Holies, completed the covered Sanctuary. The whole sanctuary was 45 by 15 by 15. The Holy Place was 30x15 and the Holy of Holies was 15x15. Once a year, on the day of atonement, the High Priest would enter the Holy of Holies alone. He would actually have to enter it 4 times, 1) with the blood of a bull, 2) with the blood of a goat, 3) to bring the incense burning in the golden censer and again, 4) to retrieve the censer - but only on a single day. The Rabbi s wrote that if he entered a fifth time, it might mean his death! Page 2

Before we continue, I would like to discuss the phrases for the people s sins committed in ignorance. Were the sacrifices only effective to cover sins committed in ignorance or by accident? What of intentional or willful sins? This idea found its way into anti-messiah propaganda because many Rabbi s started teaching that sacrifices were only meant for unintentional sins. And, therefore, they argue, Jesus sacrifice was incomplete. Where did they get such a concept? Well, at least 18 times in the OT the law prescribed a sin offering for unintentional sin; This led them to believe that there was no atonement for those who committed sins intentionally. But the this is a dishonest approach to the sacrifices since other sins, committed intentionally and with full knowledge of the law were covered under the Levitical sacrifices particularly the burnt offerings. And just as clearly, the sacrifices on the Day of Atonement were not limited to just unintentional sins (Leviticus 16). Leviticus 16:21 KJV And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness ((to die)) The word iniquities means perversity, that is, (moral) evil, I don t think one can act perverse unintentionally. And transgressions refer to rebellious sins, rebelling against God. Again, can one rebel unintentionally? And certainly, the Passover lamb was to atone for all sins as declared by John the Baptizer and Paul the Apostle ; 1 Corinthians 5:7 NKJV Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. I believe the author was setting up a comparison between the efficacy of the former sacrifice and the greatness and completeness of Jesus offering. Those who come against Jesus will always try to negate what He s done. (Hebrews 9:8 NKJV) the Holy Spirit indicating this, that the way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was still standing (positionally e.g., in good standing). On the surface this seems to say that since the tabernacle (that is, the Temple) was still standing, that the way into the Holy of Holies was not made manifest. But, the word standing actually means something different: Page 3 Hebrews 9:8 NLT By these regulations the Holy Spirit revealed that the entrance to the Most Holy Place was not freely open as long as the Tabernacle and the system it represented were still in use.

The author, thru the Holy Spirit, reveals to us that there is a way into the Holiest of All for others and not just the High Priest. This way was not made manifest while the Holy of Holies still had value. But with Christ s death and His fulfillment of the righteous requirements of the Law, the Temple and its priestly services became obsolete. Christ has opened the Holy of Holies, that is, access to heaven by faith now, Heb_4:16; Heb_7:19, Heb_7:25; Heb_10:19, Heb_10:22; by sight hereafter, Isa_33:24; Rev_11:19; Rev_21:2, Rev_21:3) to all mankind. (Hebrews 9:9 NKJV) It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the conscience (10) concerned only with foods and drinks, various washings, and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation. While atonement was made for the sins of the people, and forgiveness was extended, this was not for salvation nor did it alleviate the guilt regarding the sinful act. Salvation has always been by faith in the Coming One. There were many prophesies, writings, and teachings about Him. The ancient rabbi s and teachers knew of Him and understood that He would bring good news. Until then, sins were covered, but the grace and mercy of God were still poured out. So the sacrifices and holy offerings were a symbol for us (and those of the first century). And, as we have said elsewhere, the sacrifice was a covering and not a removal of the sin, AND the removal of the guilt it brought. After the sacrifices were made, the person or persons requesting the sacrifice would still not feel forgiven because there was still a consciousness of the sins committed. Their guilt would remain and therefore, sacrifices would have to be repeated over again, like the Day of Atonement was year after year. Page 4 BARNES even when offerings were made for sin the conscience was not relieved. They could not expiate guilt; they could not make the soul pure; they could not of themselves impart peace to the soul by reconciling it to God. They could not fully accomplish what the conscience needed to have done in order to give it peace. Nothing will do this but the blood of the Redeemer. A guilty conscience invades our mind and our souls filling it up with regrets and selfhatred. Oh, why did I do that? Will He ever forgive me! and with that, comes a break in the relationship. But when you seek forgiveness from Him or when a brother or sister comes to you and says, I forgive you!, doesn t the burden fall off your shoulders? Isn t the relationship is restored? And if this happens in human relationships, HOW MUCH MORE, with God who has already forgiven you and patiently waits for you to acknowledge it and agree with Him about the sin. This is exactly what the blood of Messiah has done! You are totally forgiven! You do not have to swim in the cesspool of guilt! You can have a relationship with God and in that precious liberty of being forgiven and with the penalty completely paid, you can now serve Him in love and freedom, ministering to Him through your ministry to others! In modern times, many Jews have sadly confessed that they felt no forgiveness, no

atonement, no difference at all after they dutifully fasted and prayed and did no work for the Day of Atonement. I suspect that this also occurs on Resurrection Day when people come to church out of obligation or family tradition. But no amount of prayer, repentance, giving can substitute for the Blood of Christ Jesus! Having described the former, we come to the present ; Hebrews 9:11-15 NKJV But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. (Hebrews 9:11 NKJV) But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Now that the Messiah has come, a more perfect system is introduced by which the conscience may be made free from guilt. Yes, the Old was defective but the New met the real need and condition of man: forgiveness of sin and the removal of the constant guilt of it. Christ officiates as our High Priest in a much more magnificent and perfect temple compared to the earthly tabernacle or the temple under the old covenant. He performed the great functions of his priestly office - bringing the blood of the atonement - into heaven itself, of which the most holy place in the tabernacle was but the shadow. Not made with hands/not of this creation - describes heaven as being prepared by God himself Page 5 2 Corinthians 5:1 NKJV For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. (Hebrews 9:12 NKJV) Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. (Hebrews 9:13 NKJV) For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, (Hebrews 9:14 NKJV) how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? His own blood was carried in to the Most Holy Place. And the author rightly says HOW MUCH MORE can His Blood cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? The word serve actually means worship; for with our consciences cleanse and our sins forgiven, we can, in Spirit and Truth, worship the living God! And not just CAN, but we will want to! We will want to serve Him, worship Him out of the gratitude of such a great salvation!

Interestingly, Paul uses a word that is based on this word in Romans: Romans 12:1 NKJV I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service WORSHIP (G2999 is from G3000). BTW: ashes of a red heifer was described in Numbers 19; these ashes, when mixed with other ingredients and water were used for the purification of sin associated with touching a dead body which makes one defiled and unclean before the LORD. And yes, the Blood of Christ is eternally effective in dealing with uncleanness associated with ANY sin. See 1 John 1:9. Today, we saw two of the four passages that compared and contrasted the Old Covenant with the New Covenant. But in fact, we compared the things of the Old Covenant with the reality of Jesus. The Old was symbolic of the New. The New was hidden in the pictures, types, symbols and shadows of the Old but not so hidden that the essence of salvation was totally obscured; The Perfect Seed was prophesized; He was taught and discussed in nearly every Jewish writing. But through the weakness of the flesh, He was veiled. For sure Old Covenant saints were saved by faith in this Promised One. But the veil was torn; the veil was removed; and this chapter explains to its readers, then and now, that TRUTH has come, manifested in the Christ, the Savior Jesus. This is TRUTH and while you can ignore it, deny it, reject it, hate it, it is still the TRUTH. And this TRUTH cannot be A truth, for the stakes are too high; This TRUTH cannot be A truth because it is not of this world nor of our world systems (philosophies and man-made religions) because it did not originate with man, but in the Mind of God. Romans 1:20-21 NKJV For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, (21) because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. And, God sent TRUTH to tabernacle with His Creation; not as a burning bush, seen by one man; not as a cloud, into which only one man was allowed; not as the Angel of the LORD, sent for a specific purpose for a specific person.no, TRUTH came as Immanuel, GOD WITH US. TRUTH came and walked with us, ate with us, taught us, healed us, and saved us. And while this TRUTH returned to heaven to be our Mediator, He did not leave us orphans.no He sent the SPIRIT OF TRUTH to dwell in us! So, I must conclude with this again: Hebrews 1:1-3 NKJV God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, (2) has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; (3) who being the brightness of His glory and Page 6

the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, (4) having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. LET THE TRUTH PERMEATE OUR SOULS! MEDITATE ON IT; WRESTLE WITH IT BUT DO NOT DO IT ALONE; POUR OUT YOUR HEART TO HIM AND ASK, PLEAD FOR UNDERSTANDING AND THAT REVELATION KNOWLEDGE THAT SINKS DEEP INTO THE HEART. I AM SPECIFICALLY TALKING ABOUT HIS WORD ABOUT WHICH HE PRAYED: John 17:17 NKJV Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. Page 7
