Growth Group Homework For the week of April 12, 2009 GETTING TO KNOW YOU 1. Now that spring is here and the weather will be getting nicer, a number of people will enjoy getting outside more often. If you had to spend a day outside with no work or obligations...where would you go? What would you do? Who would you bring along? 2. Pastor Larry pointed out three imposters of genuine faith that may appear spiritual, but in reality are not what God is looking for. Is there one of the three you could see yourself mistaking for real faith? What could that look like in your life? 3. Looking back at this week s teaching, what particular point, statement or Scripture caught your attention, challenged or confused you the most? DIGGING DEEPER 1. Abraham s example of trusting God with the life of his son can leave us wondering, How could I ever have that kind of faith and trust God that much? How do Jesus words in John 14:6-12 and Matthew 17:14-20 help you answer this question? John 14:6-12 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. [7] If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him." [8] Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us." [9] Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? [10] Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. [11] Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. [12] I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do

what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. [NIV] Matthew 17:14-20 When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. [15] "Lord, have mercy on my son," he said. "He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. [16] I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him." [17] "O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me." [18] Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment. [19] Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?" [20] He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." [NIV] How do you respond to Jesus teaching that we can do what He did? Why do you think this is hard to believe? Even a small amount of faith (a mustard seed is very small) can accomplish amazing things if that faith is placed in a mighty God. Has your understanding of Jesus changed as a result of this week s sighting of Jesus in the Old Testament? 2. It s not difficult to fall into the trap of pursuing a faith that God is not looking for. If we misunderstand or take the following verses out of context, we could end up in one of the three traps Pastor Larry talked about this weekend. How can the following passages help develop your faith? Now can you think of how taking each passage out of context can lead us into one of the traps? Intellectual Assent - 2 Timothy 3:16 2 Timothy 3:16

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, [NIV] Positive Thinking - Romans 8:28 Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. [NIV] Risky Living - Philippians 4:13 Philippians 4:13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength. [NIV] How does 1 Corinthians 13:2-3 help you further understand how to live with a faith that makes a difference and pleases God? 1 Corinthians 13:2-3 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. [3] If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. [NIV] 3. The Apostle Paul knew that Jesus resurrection is the foundational event in the faith of every person. He wrote, if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. (1 Corinthians 15:17) Suppose a friend told you that they attended church this Easter for the first time in quite a while. They liked the service and their curiosity was sparked. But Come on, they say, what difference does an empty tomb really make? How could you respond to them by completing the following sentence using the Scriptures listed below? A living Jesus means... John 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; [26] and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" [NIV] Ephesians 1:18-20 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, [19] and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty

strength, [20] which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, [NIV] Acts 1:1-8 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach [2] until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. [3] After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. [4] On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. [5] For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." [6] So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" [7] He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. [8] But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." [NIV] John 16:7-14 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. [8] When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: [9] in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; [10] in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; [11] and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. [12] "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. [13] But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. [14] He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. [NIV]

TAKING IT HOME Is there an area of your life in which you sense God is asking you to step out in faith? If so, what s your next step? Prayer is an important part of the Christian life, which is why we desire for prayer to be a priority in Growth Groups. Good group prayer often takes effort, so here are some guidelines to help make your Growth Group prayer time more effective. WE PRAY FOR ONE TOPIC AT A TIME- Anyone in the group is free to introduce a prayer request either before prayer begins or during the prayer time. Once a topic is introduced, the group focuses on that request alone. Once it's covered, the group moves on to the next topic. EACH PERSON PRAYS MORE THAN ONCE- Because the group is focusing on one topic at a time, each person is encouraged to pray several times during the prayer time for those topics they feel most led to pray about. WE KEEP OUR PRAYERS SHORT AND SIMPLE- Group prayer goes better when members keep their prayers short and to the point. When someone prays for a long time, it's hard for the other members to stay focused and long prayers tend to intimidate those who are just learning to pray out loud in a group.
