Rev. Mike Winters Pastor Ben Harding Music Director Dr. Ray Jones, Jr. Pastor Emeritus WISE BAPTIST NEWS A PUBLICATION FOR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF WISE BAPTIST CHURCH December 12, 2017 A place for faith and fellowship with family and friends. Dear church family and friends, Change is hard, even when it is a good change. It is leaving the known for the unknown. It is stepping out of certainty into uncertainty. Therefore, we often resist change automatically. Unconsciously, the fear lurks that the change may make things worse instead of better. This applies to all of us. The first heavier-than-air airplane was flown successfully by Wilbur and Orville Wright on Dec. 13, 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. When news of their flight was communicated to their hometown newspaper in Dayton, Ohio, the editors ignored it. Neighbors thought they were crazy. Other logical supporters, the Scientific American journal and the US War Department, also ignored this breakthrough. There was enormous resistance to this great change. Ironically, Amos Root, an expert in bees, recognized the Wright brothers monumental achievement and published a glowing report in the journal, Gleanings in Bee Culture in the January 1905 issue. Perhaps, he had greater appreciation of the flight of man after observing the flight of bees. Growth, by definition, is change. For that reason, we may automatically resist it. However, that is the nature of discipleship. Jesus says in Luke 9:23 to deny [yourself], take up [your] cross daily and follow me. So, when the next change faces us in our spiritual life, let s take time to step back, read the Scriptures, think and pray before taking (or not taking) the next step. Another way to think of it is as an adventure. An adventure is going somewhere we have not been before. Think back to all of the changes made in our lives that have been very positive. Don t miss out on what God may want to do next in you and through you! It is my privilege to share this spiritual adventure with Wise Baptist Church! Love, Pastor Mike How to Join Wise Baptist Church: Express one of the following to the Pastor during the closing hymn: Transfer of Letter Transfer membership to Wise Baptist Church Baptism Desire to express faith in Christ through baptism Statement of Faith Baptized believer not on a membership roll Watch Care Desire to be connected to our Church family without official membership Important Dates Church-Wide Christmas Dinner December 13, 6pm Children to See The Star Norton Theatre December 16 Jubilation Ringers The Inn at Wise December 17, 5pm Caroling at The Laurels December 20, 7pm Youth New Year s Eve Lock-In December 31 Mission Committee January 3, 5pm Church Directory Meeting January 14, 12 pm Inside Announcements Page 2-3 BDays/Anniv. MUSIC * Youth * Children News Greetings, everyone!! I hope that this note finds everyone well and fully engrossed with the Christmas spirit. I would like to thank each and every one of you for coming out to the cantata this past Sunday. I hope that you were as spiritually enriched as I was in putting this together. Thank you to the choir, thank you to the Susans, thank you to our narrators and thank you to the orchestra for your hard work and dedication in putting this program together. As we continue through this Christmas season, let us remember... Through a distant voice, taking place on the midnight clear, Mary claimed "I love you even more" as Christ's birth drew near. Shouting throughout the heavens knowing 'tis a wonderful thing, Shepherds and scholars witnessed the birth of the world's true one King. Though a great mystery for some but the great truth to tell, Emmanuel, God Incarnate here to dwell!! I pray that the love and joy of Jesus Christ is with you now, and forever more as we enjoy the fellowship that we experience through our gathering to worship. Merry Christmas!! Ben P.S. Announcements January Dates to Remember! There will be no Wednesday evening activities at the church December 27. The office will be closed on Dec. 25, 26, 27. WINTER BIBLE STUDY! Wednesdays, Jan. 3 - Feb. 7, 6:45pm First Peter: Living as Strangers in a Secular World Sometimes, we expect more support for our Christian faith from our government and culture. If so, we will be constantly disappointed, or even angry. This attitude can cause us to get stuck in our faith journey. On the other hand, resistance to our faith can cause us to rely on God even more. After all, God is bigger than anyone or anything. The Book of I Peter speaks directly to these issues. Join me & others as we explore how our faith can thrive despite resistance from the world in which we live. ~ Blessings, Pastor Mike We would love to deliver a meal to our shut-ins or those unable to attend our Wednesday night services because of illness or other complications. Please call by 12pm on Wed: Church office (328-6247) or Edgar Owens (328-6129, 275-9607) or John Kennedy (328-5013) January 3 - Missions Committee, 5pm January 11 - Leadership Team, 6pm January 12 - Children s Ministry Team January 14 - Church Directory Meeting, 12pm January 28 - Church-Wide Birthday Party Kitchenware Sign-Out So that we may better keep track of kitchenware & linens as used by our congregation for various needs & events throughout the week, the Fellowship Ministry Committee is asking that we sign out items whenever we may temporarily borrow them. Upon returning items, please cross these out on the Sign -Out Sheet in the kitchen. This will let the Fellowship Ministry Committee know that items have been returned & placed back in their proper storage spaces. Thank you! ~ Teresa Adkins, Sherlene Hall, Linda Burgess, Susan Smith Grab-n-Go Ministry The white baskets near the elevator are used to collect non-perishable food items for elderly people who receive assistance from the Social Service Adult Protective Services in Wise County. There is a great need for this ministry. Sherlene Hall gathers the donations and delivers them to Social Services for distribution. Please give generously and please pray for this ministry.

What a beautiful Christmas Cantata we experienced on Sunday evening! Thank you to Ben Harding, Susan Mullins, our cantata choir and narrators for all of their hard work & sharing of their gifts! Thank you also to Teresa Adkins & Sherlene Hall for coordinating the reception afterwards, and to Wendy Adrian for providing childcare during the cantata. Love, Pastor Mike
