+ The Liturgy of the Word + PRELUDE Allegro Moderato (from Concerto in D Major) PROCESSIONAL SONG Jennifer Ernst, flute Joseph Haydn Heaven is Singing for Joy WELCOME OPENING ACCLAMATION Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. There is one Body and one Spirit; There is one hope in God s call to us; One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; One God and Father of us all. 2

COLLECT OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Lord of the desert river, you search our depths and call us by name: may your flame-born Spirit open the heavens that we might recognize you in the one born of earth, Jesus Christ, the Gift of Peace. Amen. THE READING ISAIAH 43:1-7 Thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, "Give them up," and to the south, "Do not withhold; (continued on next page) 3

bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth-- everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made." Reader: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 29 The cantor will sing the refrain once, and the congregation will then repeat the refrain. The psalm will be sung by the cantor, and the refrain will be sung as indicated. Verse: Give to the Lord, you sons of God, give to the Lord glory and praise, give to the Lord the glory due his name; adore the Lord in holy attire. All sing refrain Verse: The voice of the Lord is over the waters, the Lord, over vast waters. The voice of the Lord is mighty; the voice of the Lord is majestic. All sing refrain Verse: The God of glory thunders, and in his temple all say, Glory! The Lord is enthroned above the flood; the Lord is enthroned as king forever. All sing refrain 4

THE EPISTLE ACTS 8:14-17 When the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit (for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. Reader: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GRADUAL SONG Baptized in Water 5

THE GOSPEL (Please stand.) LUKE 3:15-17, 21-22 Gospeler: The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." Gospeler: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. THE SERMON The Rev. Lisa Tucker-Gray 6

A person appointed leads the following petitions: Leader: Deliver them, O Lord, from the way of sin and death. Lord, hear our prayer. Leader: Open their hearts to your grace and truth. Lord, hear our prayer. Leader: Fill them with your holy and life-giving Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Leader: Keep them in the faith and communion of your holy Church. Lord, hear our prayer. Leader: Teach them to love others in the power of the Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Leader: Send them into the world in witness to your love. Lord, hear our prayer. 10

Leader: Bring them to the fullness of your peace and glory. Lord, hear our prayer. The Priest says: Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen. THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATER The Priest blesses the water, first saying: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. The Priest then says: We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. At the following words, the Priest touches the water. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. 11

THE BAPTISM BCP PAGE 307 Each family comes to the font, presenting the child. The child is presented to the Priest who pours water on the candidate saying: Benjamin Martin, Samuel John, Mallory Sheri, David George, Kate Rylan, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Priest marks the forehead of the child with the sign of the cross using chrism oil saying: Benjamin, Samuel, Mallory, David, Kate, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ s own for ever. Amen. A candle is then given to the candidate. Benjamin, Samuel, Mallory, David, Kate, receive the light of Christ. Amen. When all families have returned to their seats, the Priest continues, Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon these your servants the forgiveness of sin, and have raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them inquiring and discerning hearts, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER C BCP PAGE 369 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise. Glory to you for ever and ever. At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. By your will they were created and have their being. From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another. Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight. Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace. By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed. 15

And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn: THE SANCTUS You are Holy 16

And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. All: Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving, we celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming. 17

Lord God of our Fathers; God of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, and Jacob and Rachel; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name. Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread. Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. AMEN. THE LORD S PRAYER BCP PAGE 364 And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 18
