A new year. Another year closer to the coming of our Lord. Another year of anticipation and hope for what lies ahead in each of our lives. Another opportunity to grow closer to our Lord and to live in a manner which pleases and brings glory to Him. Another year to increase our wisdom and knowledge. Another year of opportunity to live our lives to the fullest both physically and spiritually. Ready or not, here we go!

Comments from Jeremy Shew. I love the holidays but they are a whirl wind aren t they? It was almost as if I missed Christmas this year as my family was so busy! Does anyone else feel this way? I felt like the holidays were gone before I even knew it! However I loved that our Christmas Eve service gave a moment of pause. My favorite moment of the night was the lighting of the candles as I looked around and saw the room slowly come to light as one by one the candles were lit. It was a beautiful reminder of what the church is called to be. Our sanctuary, once dark, was filled with the light. This world is filled with darkness, as I am reminded more and more each day, but Jesus came to bring light to you and to a dark world! Jesus said in John 8:12 I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. Jesus came, and gave His life, so that you no longer must walk in darkness. He also expects you to share that light. Jesus tells the church You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. My prayer is that in 2019 the Sardinia Church of Christ continues to be, and becomes an even brighter city on a hill that we continue to share the good news and the light of Jesus! Jeremy

Student Ministry News Questions? Please contact jhenslee.scoc@gmail.com Facebook page: www.facebook.com/scocstudents There was one day I had a friend venting to me about the trouble she was having at the time. It was the one year anniversary of losing a baby only a couple months into her pregnancy and emotions were flooding back on her on top of current struggles she was having which brought up a sea of feelings of inadequacy and loneliness. I am a man who has no idea what it s like to lose a child let alone going through it. I felt the best I could offer was my understanding and how I knew several women myself who had also lost a child during pregnancy. Her response was very angry; as though I was trying to diminish or negate her troubles. For the next few minutes several angry words were thrown for trying to claim I understood her pain and her other struggles when it was impossible. It was like I was taking something away from her as if her struggle was special and unique only to her. It was as though I were telling her to suck it up and it s not a big deal. I never claimed to understand her pain, only that there are many women who do. I encouraged her to talk about it to a close female friend or family member since she hadn t told anyone but me. Not talking to anyone gave the feeling that this rarely happens and it was either extremely bad luck or the devil targeting her for no reason. My last math class in high school was the hardest. I normally did very well in math. I thought since I wasn t doing well it was probably just me but the truth was many people in my class were struggling and nobody talked about it in fear of being found out of being the only one not to get it. Once someone finally confessed to the teacher others were able to open up too, then everyone was able to help each other understand and get through it. There s a reason that the early church members and letters in the New Testament encourage confession and sharing in struggles. You re not so special that the devil won t attack you. You re also not so special the devil attacks only you. We are special because we are a body of believers who all struggle; with a Savior who got through it all. Joe
