Spirit Lake United Methodist Church 1812 Gary Ave. Spirit Lake, Iowa 51360 January 2018 Issue 1 United Methodist News In With the New It s a new year, time to put out the old and bring in the new. So, in that spirit, let me start with the old business and move to the new: Old Business 1) On behalf of my family, thank you for all the wonderful cards and gifts during the Christmas season. We very much appreciate your kindness and generosity. 2) Thanks for the wonderful Christmas Eve offering! We did something different this year and gave our offering on Christmas Eve to two wonderful ministries: Mercy Ships, which provide mobile surgical hospitals to greatly underserved areas of the world; and Autumn s Center, based in Spencer and providing for the needs of children with disabilities in our area. We raised $5,056 for these two wonderful ministries. We ll simply divide those funds in half and each ministry will receive $2,528 to each ministry. Thanks for your generosity. New Business 3) I m preaching a series called, Unafraid, during the month of January and leading up to Lent, which begins with Ash Wednesday on February 14 th. If we are going to be able to hear God s call to us and respond, both individually and as a congregation in 2018, we need to be in a place of peace and strength and not be ravaged by fear and all it does to us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. 4) I m starting a Men s Bible on Thursday, January 11 th from 7-8 a.m. at the church. We ll start with some discussion and ideas about subjects and then move forward from there. Let s make 2018 a great year! MISSION OPPORTUNITIES DISCOVERY HOUSE The Discovery House is a rewarding opportunity to serve others in our community. We can show the gift of hospitality the first Monday of each month by sharing a meal with our friends at Discovery House. Prayerfully consider this ministry, as we use our gifts in the service for others. The signup sheet and guidelines are on the Connections Table. BACKPACK PROGRAM The school has a backpack program to send food home, and our church helps with this. This program is ongoing. There is a bin in the Narthex for your donations. *Monetary contributions are appreciated as it enables the pantry to buy food and items as they are needed.* SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY - Sunday, Feb. 7th Help us make a touchdown against hunger and win the game by bringing cans of soup to church and placing it in the grocery cart. Every item you bring provides someone with a hot meal! A New Vision for our Future Okoboji United Methodist Camp We have 'A New Vision' at Lake Okoboji United Methodist Camp that will take us into our next 100 years of ministry and allow us to continue changing lives at the lake. For over 100 years, campers, families, church groups, and guests have visited our camp and called this Camp home for a week or more each summer. It is amazing to look back on our history and see the way this site has adapted and evolved to the current style of camping we have today. To think about how many actual lives have been impacted by time spent at Lake Okoboji United Methodist Camp is mind-boggling The visioning that happened in 1915 is much like the visioning we are doing today in 2017. In 1914-1915 they were looking for a permanent location to have camp each summer. We are looking to have a better permanent structure for housing campers and guests. The vision we are presenting starts with a new 96 bed facility to house our campers and guest. The second and third phases will include indoor worship space, adult friendly suites, multi-purpose gym area and a possible swimming pool. It was a large undertaking in 1915 to acquire 40 acres and start the process of creating our site. It is hard to imagine what life would be like had that visioning not taken place. Now we need your help to make our New Vision a reality. Will you stand on the shore with us today and pray for the future we can have with a new building? Make a gift towards this building project? Please contact the camp soon to make a gift in 2017 and share how you would like to give into the future. I invite you to explore our website for more information. If you have any questions or would like to talk more about ways to give and support, please contact, Derek Bergman, Site Director by calling the office 712-336-2936 or email directly Derek@OkobojiCamp.com. This kind of project will help us with our summer and year round ministry but, it can not happen without your financial and prayerful support. Thank you! Derek Bergman, Site Director 4
