Mass Schedule for Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God Please note that there will not be a vigil Mass in the evening on Tuesday, 12/31/13. Tuesday s Mass will be in morning at 8:00am. This Mass DOES NOT count for the Holy Day of Obligation. On January 1st, the Masses for the Holy Day will be at 10:30 am and 7 pm. Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God (January 1) This Feast is the Octave of Christmas and celebrates Mary as the Theotokos, or God-bearer. The term theotokos was selected by the First Council of Ephesus in 431 A. D. as a description of Our Lady. This early ecumenical council...only the third called by our Church...wished to define the exact balance of natures found in the Jesus who was born of Mary: that he was both fully human and fully divine. Thereby, they refuted the Nestorian heresy, which held that Mary bore only the human form of Jesus.
MERRY CHRISTMAS SEASON! An ancient carol tells us, On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, a partridge in a pear tree Amazingly, this carol is a short catechism for young people. You see, from 1559 until 1829, Catholics in England were not permitted to practice openly. Each element in the carol has a double meaning. To fit the number scheme, you must know that, when the song reaches number 9 (the Fruits of the Holy Spirit), the composer combined 6 fruits that were similar into 3...there are actually 12 Fruits of the Holy Spirit. The True Love referred to represents Jesus, because True Love was born on Christmas. The partridge also represents Jesus, because these birds will die defending their offspring. Two turtle doves= Old & New Testament Three French hens= Faith, Hope, & Love Four calling birds=four Gospels Five Golden Rings=the Torah Six Geese a-laying=six days of creation Nine Ladies Dancing=Charity, Joy, Peace, Patience, Goodness, Mildness, Fidelity, Modesty, & Chastity (more Fruits) Ten Lords a-leaping=ten Commandments Eleven Pipers Piping=eleven faithful Apostles Twelve Drummers Drumming= Twelve Points of Faith in the Apostles Creed Thank you! To all those who served our Church during the Christmas holidays: Danny & Becky Patt & their decorating committee To Donna Kerstiens, Cristal Coleman, Becky White, and all those who served, played, & sang at the Youth Mass To Mr. Bob Augustin & the members of the Adult Choir who sang so beautifully at Midnight Mass To Michael Balatico, our violinist, who uplifted our spirits at Midnight Mass To Anne Scott & Lena Ackerman who made music for us on Christmas morning.
