Cyndi Acree I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayer for Illumination... Cyndi Acree Let us pray together. Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that, as the Scriptures are read and your Word proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen Scripture... Hebrews 4:11-16... Cyndi Acree Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Thi s i s the Word o f G od for the people of God. Thanks be to God! Amen! Sermon... Surgery for the Soul... Pastor Steve Lenten Series Reinvented in Forty Days Invitation Hymn... What the world needs is not just a little bit of love, but major surgery. Oswald Chambers, (1874-1917) School is surgery. You ought not to go out of it with pleasure but with pain. For you were not in sound health when you entered. Epictetus, (55-135) The surgery of life hurts. It helps me though to know the surgeon Himself, the wounded Surgeon, has felt every stab of pain and sorrow. Phillip Yancey, (1949- ) There is a pain that means that things are coming apart. Sometimes there is a pain that means things are coming back together. Surgery can be painful, but it leads to healing. John Ortberg, (1957- ) Although there was a Christian church in Corinth, there was still a lot of Corinth in the Christian. A number of attitudes and behaviors needed radical surgery without killing the patient. This is what Paul s letter to the Corinthians attempted to do. Gordon Fee, (1934- ) 4
