FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MOTHER S DAY MAY 14, 2017 TODAY'S WORSHIP Divine Service III LSB pages 184-202 L = Liturgist * = Stand C = Congregation PRELUDE 10:30 Orchestra of Peace Matchless King Arr. Jeff Cranfill Overture of Praise Arr. Jeff Cranfill WELCOME *OPENING HYMN Praise the Almighty LSB 797 1. Praise the Almighty, my soul, adore Him! Yes, I will laud Him until death; With songs and anthems I come before Him As long as He allows me breath. From Him my life and all things came; Bless, O my soul, His holy name. Alleluia! Alleluia! 2. Trust not in rulers; they are but mortal; Earth-born they are and soon decay. Vain are their counsels at life s last portal, When the dark grave engulfs its prey. Since mortals can no help afford, Place all your trust in Christ, our Lord. Alleluia! Alleluia! 3. Blessed, oh, blessed are they forever Whose help is from the Lord Most High, Whom from salvation can nothing sever, And who in hope to Christ draws nigh. To all who trust in Him, our Lord Will aid and counsel now afford. Alleluia! Alleluia! 10:30 Green Park Choristers and Ringers and Singers O Sing a Song Unto the Lord Walker *INVOCATION AND GENERAL CONFESSION L: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. L: We wait in hope for the Lord. C: He is our help and our shield. L: From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind. C: From His dwelling place He watches all who live on earth. L: The eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him. C: On those whose hope is in His unfailing love. L: We confess together: C: Lord, I confess to You that my behavior has not always been what You require. The evil that I ought not do, I have done. The good I should do has often gone undone. I have not consistently demonstrated my love for You and those around me. In Your mercy, do not judge me according to my sins. Forgive me for the sake of the person, death, and resurrection of Jesus, my Lord and Savior. Amen. *THE ABSOLUTION

*THE GLORIA PATRI (Taken from LSB, page 186) C: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. *THE KYRIE C: Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. *THE COLLECT OF THE DAY L: The Lord be with you. C: And with thy spirit. L: Let us pray. THE FIRST READING for the fifth Sunday of Easter is from Acts 7:2a, 51-60, pages 914-916: (5:00, 8:00 & 10:30) 2 And Stephen said: "Brothers and fathers, hear me 51 You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, 53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it." 54 Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth at him. 55 But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 And he said, "Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." 57 But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together at him. 58 Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." 60 And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." And when he had said this, he fell asleep. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 8:00 Chancel Choir Come and Be Joyful THE EPISTLE READING is from I Peter 2:4-10, pages 1014-1015: 4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it stands in Scripture: "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame." 7 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, "The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone," 8 and "A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense." They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. L: This is the Word of the Lord. *ALLELUIA AND VERSE C: Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. *THE HOLY GOSPEL - according to St. John, the fourteenth chapter, verses 1-12, page 901: C: Glory be to Thee, O Lord. 1 "Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going." 5 Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?" 6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him." 8 Philip said

to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us." 9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves. 12 "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to Thee, O Christ. *THE CONFESSION OF FAITH (From Luther s Small Catechism) I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true. HYMN OF THE DAY Christ Sits at God s Right Hand LSB 564 1. Christ sits at God s right hand, His saving work complete, To reign till ev ry foe will lie Beneath His feet All that the Father planned, The Son sought to fulfill, When first He said, Lord, here am I To do Your will. 2. Christ s altar was the tree, Where on the world s behalf He shed a blood, unlike the blood Of goat or calf, To seal God s guarantee Of grace that cannot fail; With blood He entered for our good Behind the veil. 3. What costly sacrifice To cover human sin! Who but Christ Jesus had the right To enter in? His blood, that sprinkled price, So we might be assured That our inheritance in light Has been secured. 4. Then let us now draw near, Washed in that precious flood And enter the Most Holy Place By Jesus blood, From hearts that are sincere, Let tongues our hope profess, And trust anew God s faithful grace That we confess. THE SERMON Godly Mothers (I Peter 2:9-10) THE OFFERING - During the offering all worshipers are asked to fill out the blue or ivory cards found in the pew rack. They will be collected immediately after the offering. VOLUNTARY 10:30 Green Park Ringers For the Beauty of the Earth Arr. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen. *PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH *LORD'S PRAYER (Found in the back cover of the hymnal)

*THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION L: The peace of the Lord be with you always. *THE AGNUS DEI LSB page 198 O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, grant us Thy peace. Amen. DISTRIBUTION HYMN Draw Near and Take the Body of the Lord LSB 637 1. Draw near and take the body of the Lord, And drink the holy blood for you outpoured; Offered was He for greatest and for least, Himself the victim and Himself the priest. 2. He who His saints in this world rules and shields, To all believers life eternal yields; With heav nly bread He makes the hungry whole, Gives living waters to the thirsting soul. 3. Come forward then with faithful hearts sincere, And take the pledges of salvation here. O Lord, our hearts with grateful thanks endow As in this feast of love You bless us now. 10:30 Green Park Choristers & Ringers Let the Sun Shine Down Peter Johns OTHER DISTRIBUTION HYMNS LSB 862, 623, 620 NUNCI DIMITTIS - Song of Simeon Luke 2:29-32 LSB page 199 Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace according to Thy word, for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation, which Thou hast prepared before the face of all people, a light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of Thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. L: Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.
