2019 April Newsletter Apr 7 Reaping the Joy of God s Future Psalm 126, Isaiah 43.16-21 Apr 14 Behold the Man Matthew 21.1-11 John 19.1-5 Apr 18 Jesus Prays the Psalms from the Cross MAUNDY THURSDAY SERVICE 6:30 in the Chapel Apr 21 EASTER SUNDAY Apr 28 Jeffrey Willetts Preaching Professor of Pastoral Ministry McAfee School of Theology Signpost #3: Beauty On Sunday January 13 I preached a sermon that included ten signposts of church renewal. Diana Butler Bass, a scholar of the American church, studied congregations that seem to be flourishing, and she found ten practices that were most often found in these churches: Discernment Contemplation Beauty Hospitality Testimony Diversity Justice Reflection Worship Healing Each month this year I will be writing an article in the newsletter on these ten signposts so that we may keep them before us and consider ways we can practice them in our context. This month: Beauty As the Protestant Reformation began in the 16th century as a response against the Catholic Church, changes ensued some good and needed, others over-reaching. One over-reach was the disdain for art in cathedrals and other places of worship. There were those who have mistakenly believed that statues and icons in Catholic churches were idols of worship. There was a failure of understanding how objects and other works of art can be used to point us toward God and enhance our worship. Beauty is one of the great gifts of God. Ralph Waldo Emerson said that beauty is God s handwriting. Wherever beauty is found, it can be an instrument lifting our voices in praise, worship, and gratitude to God. As spring begins to blossom around us, allow its beauty to lift your heart in prayer. And may we consider at FBC Jasper the ways in which art could enhance our worship together. FBCJ Preschool March has come and gone, and we had lots of fun with our events last month! The kids made a barn drawing with pastels on Art Day, Spring picture days went great with graduation pictures being taken of our Pre-K students. Time sure has flown by! There were St. Patrick s Day crafts and Transportation Safety Day, during which our bigger kids got to board a school bus and learn about bus safety. We finished out the month with our field trip to Chestatee Wildlife Preserve with our two- and three-year olds. Seeing all the animals and even getting to cuddle some of them made it a wonderful day! We are looking forward to the end of the year and all the happenings that come with it. We ll have Kindergarten Awards, the End of Year Program, and our Last Day of School Blowout! Lots of fun things to round out a fantastic school year. Finally, we are thrilled to welcome Lana Callahan and Samantha Dunn as our new Head and Assistant Directors! They are both hitting the ground running and making plans for an even better school year in 2019-2020. We are excited to see what the future holds for the school and our new leadership team! Thank you all for your support! God Bless! Marie Wetherbee Interim Director of Preschool preschool@fbcjasper.com 706-253-5017 Happy April! What a busy time for our church family! During this Lenten season we are focusing on the miracles of Jesus. Of course, we are learning about them in a kid friendly way! As we prepare our hearts and minds for Easter, we are also getting prepared for the Easter Egg Hunt! Please prayerfully consider giving plastic Easter eggs or individually wrapped candy for the Easter Egg Hunt. Donations can be left in the Preschool or church office by April 17. Camp is coming! We have three spots open for CentriKid Camp for July 22-26th at Gardner Webb University. This camp is for students who have completed 3rd-6th grade. Please see Anna as soon as possible if you have kiddos interested in camp. This week will be a wonderful time of fellowship for this group. Quotes of the Month is brought to you by the Rasco Twins and Jax Poole Twin 1: We have to clean the table. Ms. Anna: That is right, we have to keep God s house clean for everyone Twin 2: Yeah, but we really have to keep it clean for you, cause you live here. It is Ms. Anna s house. Jax Poole: Where is JJ? We go to JJ s House! Easter Egg Hunt April 21 at 10:00 We will be working to teach the kiddos where JJ and Ms. Anna live. Thanks, Anna S. J.
