From the Desk of...bernadette Zamora Third Sunday of Lent March 24, 2019 Here I am Lord. Today s readings remind us that God is calling to each one of us. The question is, How will you answer? In the first reading, Moses is curious, but he does not know who is calling him from the burning bush. He answers "Here I am." God has called him to do an important task. Moses was responsible for all the Israelite people and freeing them from slavery. He did not have to say yes, he actually tried to get out of it by making excuses. He even tried to convince God to send his brother Aaron. I know I have tried to make excuses to avoid doing the difficult tasks that God has called me to do. When I was first asked to write for the reflections in the bulletin, I told Deacon Mike that he should ask George, my husband. He is a writer, I was a stay at home mom at the time, with hardly any qualifications to write about anything, much less the Bible Readings. Just as God wanted Moses to bring the Israelite people out of slavery, he wanted me to do the reflections. When I first started writing, I was always a little embarrassed to submit them. I still often hesitate when I submit the column, but I do it. I do it because it is what God is calling me to do. Often, God wants us to step out of our comfort zone and trust that he knows what we are capable of doing. It is often not easy; it definitely was not easy for Moses. The second reading reminds us that it was not easy for Moses or the people. Our ancestors saw God, they ate of the Manna that came from heaven. Yet, they still went against God and complained. God was so angry with them that he struck them down in the desert. The second reading is telling us that we should remember the times the Israelite people spent in the desert and not be like them. Times are not going to be easy, life on this earth is often difficult. In the past four years, our family has been through a tremendous struggle. Through this struggle though, my family has learned that God will always provide. It is easy to praise God during the good times in life, anyone can do that. In the past four years, I have learned to praise God in the difficult times as well. I learned to find his blessings in the smallest things. For example, when a friend brought food for my family while I was in the hospital. Yes, I was very ill and in a lot of pain, but I had friends and family that were helping me during that time. It is in these times, I learned that my faith increased and was made stronger. Even though God helps us through the bad times, we may fail and sin against him due to our human nature. But we must remember that the Gospel reminds us to always come back to Jesus. Jesus reminder in the Gospel is that we should repent. As Catholics we have the sacrament of Penance. During Lent we are called to reflect on our lives and how we can do better. This week, take time to reflect on how you have grumbled against God or offended him. Take time to go to Confession. It is an opportunity to receive forgiveness. Sin separates us from God, Confession brings us back to him. We are able to be free from the sin that binds us. Confession is more for you than for God. God wants you to come to him and be free. Take the opportunity to get closer to God through the sacrament of Confession this Lenten season. God Bless you!
