From the Pastor Now we have begun the Holy Season of Lent. Truthfully, it took me a few years to appreciate the opportunities that this season presents. As a child, I approached it more as a contest once I had failed at my resolve I thought all bets are off. I ll try again next year. Cambridge, MA Lent deserves our attention and our sincere effort. It is an opportunity to improve the ways that we relate to God, ourselves and others. It is a Season to change our hearts to a more faithful living of the Gospel message. It is a time for personal introspection and personal renewal. Hopefully, when we approach the Easter sacraments of new life we will feel that we bring ourselves as a people who help to build God s Kingdom. With the coming of the Lenten Season, we also announce the 2017 Catholic Appeal. Saint Peter Parish has always been very faithful in supporting this collection and helping to fund the many important programs and agencies that the Archdiocese of Boston sponsors. And so, once again we ask for your support. The 2017 Catholic Appeal goal is $76,153.33. You should have already received a donor request in the mail. If not, additional letters and return envelopes are available at the doors of the church. Thank you for your anticipated generosity. Anything that you are able to offer will be very graciously received and put to good use! March 5, 2017 The Enneagram: Discovering our True Selves Before God Saturday, March 18, 9:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Have you ever wondered why you do the things you do? And why other people do the things they do? While noting that we have become adept at exploring outer space, but not at developing similar skills in exploring our own inner space, the late Dag Hammarskjold wrote, The longest journey is the journey inwards. The Enneagram is one way of helping persons to come to a greater authenticity and freedom before God. Gail O Donnell, RSCJ, Spiritual Director, retreat leader, has been giving Enneagram workshops since 1980 and will be the presenter of our workshop. The Enneagram is an ancient method of personality typing, which has been used for centuries to increase self-knowledge. No prior knowledge is required to attend the workshop. In fact, if you have not read about it we suggest that you not do so before the workshop. Gail will give presentations on the nine personality types in the Enneagram. Reflection questions will be offered to help each participant identify his or her number. An appreciation for why we act the way we do, as well as why others act differently, can serve to facilitate reconciliation within ourselves, our relationships and the communities in which we live. Please email or call Anna Molettieri if you would like to attend: amolettieri@saintpetercambridge.org, 617-547-4235 x17. Please bring your own lunch; beverages and snacks will be provided. Earth, Justice and Laudato Si April 2, 10:15-11:15 a.m., Parish Center Join our discussion of Pope Francis encyclical, Laudato Si, subtitled, On Care for Our Common Home, led by Bede Bidlack, Associate Professor of Theology at St. Anselm College. You can find the encyclical online at laudatosi.com/watch. Please call Bob Flaherty at 617-547-4235 if you need help obtaining a copy. Food Donations Needed St. Paul s Saturday food pantry, in Harvard Square, needs salad dressing, mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup and other condiments. You may leave your donations in baskets at the church doors. Thank you! First Sunday Of Lent Lenten Book Discussion Stories from the Shadows March 26 or March 30 Several staff members attended the Archdiocesan Social Justice Convocation in the fall and had the chance to hear Dr. James O Connell, M.D, of Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program. BHCHP provides or assures access to the highest quality health care for all homeless men, women and children in the greater Boston area. Dr. O Connell spoke about his work and his recent book, Stories from the Shadows. We thought it would be a good read as a community to educate ourselves about the homeless population in greater Boston. The book is available in paperback through www.bhchp.org and in Kindle and Epub formats. We will also have copies to sell. Please call Anna Molettieiri at 617-547-4235 x117. We will host a discussion on the book on two dates: Sunday, March 26, at 10:15 a.m. or Thursday, March 30, at 7:00 p.m., both in the Parish Center. We are also looking into arranging a group visit to BHCHP. Lenten Men s Group Tuesdays 7-8:15 p.m. Beginning March 8 Please join our men s spirituality group during Lent. As a guide, we will read Fr. Richard Rohr s Breathing Under Water. The Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous is America's most significant and authentic contribution to the history of spirituality, says Fr. Rohr. He makes a case that the Twelve Steps relate well to Christian teaching and can rescue people who are drowning in addiction and may not even realize it. To survive the tidal wave of compulsive behavior and addiction, Christians must learn to breathe under water and discover God s love and compassion. Please understand that this is not a book group. During the meetings, we will reflect on where we have been and where we are in our spiritual journey. No experience with a group is required. The facilitator is Bede Bidlack, a parishioner and Associate Professor of Theology at Saint Anselm College. The book is readily available on amazon.com. The group will meet seven times in the Parish Center, 7-8:30 p.m., on March 8, 15, 22, 29, April 6 (Thursday), April 12, 19 (Wednesday). We will discuss how the group will work at our first meeting. To enroll, or if you have any questions, please email Bede Bidlack at bbidlack@anselm.edu 5
