It s a great way to meet fellow parishioners and make new friends or reconnect with old ones.

It is better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. This is a quote I once heard and thought was really rather sad when you think about it. I still remember times when my parents tried to warn me not to waste my talents, my time and my life by hanging around the wrong people, or spending my money foolishly on wasteful things that would not last, but I didn t want to hear it. I had to prove myself, only to learn the hard way. To this day I am so grateful for each and every time they helped me learn from my mistakes and helped me move on. We live in a society that seeks everything and anything from others to fill us with happiness and fulfillment. Things were not much different for the younger son in today s gospel. He left the home where he had love and peace in search of something he thought would be better in what the parable calls a life if debauchery. No matter how hard or how long we search in other places, we know that very soon, the false sense of fulfillment or happiness those places or things may bring lasts only a short time. My mom used to say all the time, the grass always looks greener on the other side. I quickly learned as I grew older that the grass is not always greener on the other side. Sure it may have appeared that way but once I jumped the fence, so -to-speak, I soon realized mom was right. That grass had its own issues. There are so many attractions in life, so many voices telling us to, Buy me or, Follow your desires and you will find happiness. The only place to find true happiness is within ourselves where God is. Our heavenly Father is waiting for us to come to him and when we do he runs to greet us, hugs us in his arms and celebrates our return to him. All we have to do is Let Go and Let God love us as we are. Welcome Fr. Levi Hartle our new Parochial Vicar. Fr. Levi joined us last week and concelebrated the weekend mass with me for his first weekend in the parish. His previous assignment was with St. Kilian Parish in Mars, PA with Fr. Charlie Bober. Please take a moment to say hello and welcome him to our parish family. Be Prepared! The week of September 19-22, all active priests of the diocese will be together for a retreat at Oglebay. By Stephanie Logue September 11, 2001 fifteen years ago. I had just come in from my morning walk and turned on Good Morning America, only to learn that it was anything but a good morning. A plane had hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center. As the smoke billowed out of the building, I saw that horrifying image of the second plane striking the South Tower. Then the report of a third plane crashing into the Pentagon. And, too close for comfort, Flight 93 crashing into a field in Shanksville, PA all in a little over an hour. A terrorist attack on American soil. Each of you can probably remember exactly where you were and what you were doing as well. For the first time in my life, I felt unsafe when I walked outside and headed to work. The skies were eerily quiet as all the aircraft had been grounded. The following days were almost surreal, hearing of so many dead, so many heroes rescuing victims, countless stories from families of the deceased, and accounts of people who narrowly escaped being a statistic. A strong feeling of patriotism emerged people began to display American flags outside of their homes. Prayer services were held to pray for the victims, for our country, and hoping that maybe God could help us deal with the horror. A month later, we took our annual fall foliage drive and, finding ourselves near Somerset, drove the short distance to Shanksville. The center of the stark field had a stack of hay bales covered with a large American flag. In front of the flag were makeshift memorials honoring the victims. When I stepped onto the field, a profound sadness enveloped me and my tears began to flow. I prayed for all those who had lost their lives. Stories of hate, violence, and terrorism fill the news each day. Human life seems to have no value any more. Let us take a moment today to pray for peace, as we remember those terrible events of fifteen years ago. There is no need to be a formal teacher. If you are grounded in our faith and interested in teaching others, give us a call. We will help you prepare and present the Catholic faith to others. HOLY APOSTLES HEALTH MINISTRY: HEALTH NOTES Flu Vaccine It s time for your 2016 flu shot, especially older adults and people with chronic illnesses. Even healthy people can get very ill from the flu. Sick people can spread it to others. Flu vaccine is the best way to reduce the chances that you ll get the flu and give it to others. When more people are vaccinated, less flu can spread through the community. Flu season begins in early October and can last as long as May. See future bulletin for dates, places and times that flu shots will be given at church. God makes the earth yield healing herbs which the prudent man should not neglect Sirach 38:4 SANCTUARY CANDLES Please contact the Parish Office if you would like to have the Sanctuary Candle in one of our churches lit in honor of a loved one. The suggested offering is $10 SANCTUARY CANDLES If a neighbor asked you for a scriptural reference for fasting, would you know where to tell them to look in the Bible? What if a friend asked you to show him where in the Bible, besides the Last Supper, where one could find Jesus talking about the importance of Eucharist - would you know where to look? How about the importance of 2 Timothy 3:16? These are just some of the goals of the "Young" Men's Bible group. We look to meet each week and grow in our Faith and understanding of the Word of God. Please contact Deacon Tim at deacontin@verizon.net if you are interested in meeting with us.
