BELIEVER BASICS 101 Session 4 A Christian and Their Witness (Leader s Version) By Dr. Jensen Petersen, 2012 CrossPoint Ministries, www.jensenpetersen.org Session Plan Opening Prayer and Review Memory Verse (5 min) Principles of the Lesson (30 min) Putting it Together (20 min) Practice Assignments and Closing Prayer (5 min) Opening Prayer Memory Verse Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Cor 5:20-21 (NASB) Principles: 2 nd Corinthians 5 1) Definition of Witnessing (v.16-21) a) Witnessing means the sharing what God has done through the Gospel personally in your life (Gospel comes from Greek and means good news ) i) The Bible speaks more on the Good News than on any other subject! ii) The Gospel that is to be proclaimed is the Good News of God concerning Salvation offered through Jesus Christ. iii) The 5 Necessary Parts of the Gospel are outlined by Jesus in (Luke 24:44-49) (1) God the Father sent God the Son (Jesus) to be the Savior (v.45-46) (2) Jesus suffered and died on the Cross as a payment for our sins (v.46) (3) Jesus physically and bodily came back to life again on the third day gaining victory over death and sin (v.46) (4) In order to gain forgiveness of sins and be saved, people must believe and repent (v.47) (5) For people to be saved, the Gospel message must be told (v.47-49) b) A Witness is one who testifies what God has done in their life and tells other that God can do the same for them. i) God Himself is an evangelist, for He "preached the gospel beforehand unto Abraham" (Gal 3:8) ii) Jesus Christ was an evangelist, for He also "preached the gospel" (Lk 20:1) iii) Paul was an evangelist as well as an apostle (Rom 1:15) 1

iv) Philip the deacon was an evangelist (Acts 21:8) v) Timothy, the pastor, was to do the work of an evangelist (2Tim 4:5) vi) All the early disciples who, on being driven out of Jerusalem, "went everywhere preaching the word" (Acts 8:4) vii) Every Christians is to be evangelical and to bear witness (1) but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, 1 Peter 3:15 (2) Jesus gave all Christians (and His church) what is called the Great Commission, And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matt 28:18-20 (3) The Christian as a winner of souls, Prov 11:30, And he who wins souls is wise. (4) Literally, he who snatches souls is wise (cf. (8) Days are coming, Jeremiah 7:32, 9:25, 19:6, Amos 8:11 (Most other eschatological references to days in Jeremiah speak of the New Covenant in Christ, e.g. Jeremiah 16:14, 23:5, 7; 30:3, 31:27, 31, 38, 33:14). Psa 90:12) (2) John 4:35, Do you not say, There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they are ripe for harvest. (3) John 4:36, Already, he who reaps is receiving wages, and is gathering fruit for life eternal (4) John 9:4, We must work the works of Him who sent Me, as long as it is day; night is coming, when no man can work. Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name, Acts 22:16 (6) Rom 13:11-12, And this do, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed. The night is almost gone, and the day is at hand. Let us therefore lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. (7) 1 Cor 7:29, But this I say, brethren, the time has been shortened, so that from now on both those who have wives should be as though they had none. reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor." John 4:35-38 (3) Behold, now is "THE ACCEPTABLE TIME," behold, now is "THE DAY OF SALVATION" 2 Cor 6:2 What ways is your local church evangelizing? What ways this week can you do and support evangelism? 3) How to evangelize a) When to evangelize? i) All the time, but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence, 1 Peter 3:15 b) How to evangelize? i) Tell people the Good News (Luke 24:44-49), tell people that (1) God the Father sent God the Son (Jesus) to be the Savior (v.45-46) (2) Jesus suffered and died on the Cross as a payment for our sins (v.46) (3) Jesus physically and bodily came back to life again on the third day gaining victory over death and sin (v.46) (4) In order to gain forgiveness of sins and be saved, people must believe and repent (v.47) ii) Tell them your story/testimony and include all four parts into your story iii) Ask them to make the same decision to repent and be saved Putting it Together Questions: 1. Are you an Evangelical? (Jesus was, Luke 4:43) 2. Do you believe that men are saved only through Gospel proclamation? (Romans 10:14-17) 3. Is there any wiggle room? Can they be saved some other way? What of the 90-95% who will never enter your church? (John 3:18) 7. Are you committed to the Gospel to such a degree that you are willing to proclaim it outside the safety of your church?
