BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL Matthew 5.7 MT 5:7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 1 Intro If the Beatitudes do anything, they tell us how far removed we are from what Christ called us to and to be Not that we need stay that way We serve a God of second chances But it is what we should aspire to- and also what he wants for us too Even if we do miss it from time to time, we still remain the fortunate few God has his hands on you Like the saints from the past- he does the same in this generation too Illus- The Fortunate Few? Consider the Beatitudes We might not consider ourselves as the fortunate few Jesus names a group of people normally thought to be unfortunate rather than fortunate Consider The Poor In Spirit Ques- Who wants to be broken- when it is so easy to divert our attention or hide behind the façade of an I m OK, You re OK philosophy? Consider Mourning Ques- Who wants to mourn- when scapegoating is so easy and so gratifying? Consider Meekness Ques- Who wants to be humble- when pride feels makes us feel so powerful? Or Consider Purity Of Heart Ques- Who wants to love the Lord your God with all your heart when there are so many other things we can do? Or Consider Hungering And Thirsting For Righteousness Ques- When we have so much food to fill us up? And What About The Merciful Ques- Mercy might be what we hope for, but justice is what we are usually after And What About The Peacemakers Ques- If we really want to be children of God then why do we believe peace comes down the barrel of a gun? And Lastly, There Is Persecution Ques- Who wants to pray for our enemies when getting even feels so much better? Ques- Yet are not these the principles Jesus says you are to practice? And through them- we will be blessed if we do them?

Illus- Silver Dollar Ceremony 2 If you ever saw the movie starring Richard Gere called An Officer And A Gentleman, you might recall he starred with Debra Winger as a Naval Aviator in training. My drill instructor Gunnery Sergeant Buck Welcher, trained Lou Gossett for his role And let me tell you, the man knew how to yell In my training days all I can remember is going in- and going out- but not a lot in between But there was one thing I will never forget The last day Silver Dollar Day We all assembled in the chapel- the brass walked in- and we all lined up to be sworn in When that was over we lined up again outside And in our left hand was a silver dollar And at the far end of the front lawn of the chapel was a flagpole Gunnery Sergeant Buck Welcher was standing there And just before I could stop in from of him, he came to attention, saluted as only Marines know how It is called The First Salute Ceremony- or Silver Dollar Ceremony, and he gets one for every officer he makes It was certainly a proud day But it was also a day when I realized what it was I signed up for 1. Following Christ Is No Different- He Is Making The Best You And Me We Can Be- And The Beatitudes Are Where We Start It s certainly nice to be privileged- to be part of the In Crowd But usually there is a reason for its exclusivity You can t sit back on your laurels to achieve it Illus- Fraternity If you have even been in a fraternity or a sorority you know the drill Secrecy is common there There are common values that bind the members together But it s also true in other too Those who are qualified in the arts- like musicians Or tradesmen- like a machinist or a mechanic They speak a common language- and have a common set of values Ques- And isn t that what we see Jesus doing here? No one grows closer to Jesus- going where they want to go- and doing what they want to do Our values change- from ours- to his Otherwise, there would be no reasons for the Beatitudes

2. Jesus Gave Us The Beatitudes- Not Only To Live By Them, But Also To Share Them- To Usher Forth The Kingdom In Our Generation You might remember the scene where Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan Immediately he went into the wilderness But he also came out of the wilderness with his message MK 1.15 The time has come, he said. The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news! 3 Illus- Thai Navy Seal I was reminded of this when I heard about the men trapped in Thailand The entire world was on pins and needles, praying for their rescue The good news was all of them were saved Except for the one rescue diver who died trying to save them Saman Kunan- the diver who died trying to rescue them- died trying to deliver oxygen tanks to the trapped boys and their coach But he himself ran out of air trying to do so He gave up himself to save them In the same way, following Christ requires more than our affirmation The kingdom will not come to those who refuse to live by its mandate 3. We Have An Obligation To Christ- To Be The Change The World Needs To See Consider the power of mercy- as Christ says here All want justice- but it is mercy that we need And so Jesus turns our judging nature around and says, Be The Mercy That The World Needs To See Jesus tells us to be merciful- for God is merciful- and the extent that we are merciful determines the mercy we receive when we need it I. FOR MERCY ALWAYS TRIUMPHS OVER JUDGMENT (vs. 7a) MT 5:7 Blessed are the merciful Consider that first word in the Beatitude It is no accident that Jesus says Blessed 1. Mercy Is Literally Love In Action We are often cutting against the grain of human nature when it comes to Christ s commands Illus- Biting My Tongue Lately I have been on a quest To find the perfect soft ice You would think that it s easy- not so

As many do, I like to eat soft ice too 4 But in the course of it I also end up biting my tongue I always tell myself- how stupid of me to bite my own tongue But I do it to myself And since it is me- I also tell no one Mercy is like that We figuratively bite our tongue - so to speak We remain silent- when we would rather retaliate We bear up under trial- not scapegoating We look to the need We serve- in the name of Jesus- and try to connect, not disconnect- to the suffering of the other These behaviors are love in action- and they are merciful To show no mercy is easy Just take no action at all 2. If We Apply Ourselves To This Quality- Then It Is A Sure Sign We Are Growing Spiritually You might remember the words of Jesus, JN 8.15 I pass judgment on no one. 16 But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. Illus- Report Cards I remember when I started getting report cards in school We had these old cardboard 8 x 10 s Folded in half And on the inside was a table And on the other side was an explanation of my grades from the teacher The card was slipped into a manila colored envelope, and on the back was a place for my parents to sign Ques- Do you remember those days? Report cards weren t always my friend And while I did OK for the most part, not all of the grading had to do with school work Behavior- or misbehavior to be exact- got graded too Ques- And why not- is it any less important? Ques- Jesus never judged anyone- and why would he? He was trying to get people in the kingdom- not keep them out And maybe there is a lesson in there for us too

II. OUR ABILITY TO EXTEND MERCY REFLECTS THE DEPTH OF OUR OWN SPIRITUAL MATURITY 5 Ques- Many will ask, Why should I be merciful? This is a cruel world! I want justice, not mercy! Do unto others before they do unto you Illus- Man s Best Friend Like many of you, I grew up with dogs in the house Funny thing about dogs- they wag their tails at just about anything- dogs love everybody But people are not like that We learn to judge, because too many times we have been bitten Ques- It s a good lesson in mercy- can we be merciful- no matter what others do? But no matter what another does- it doesn t change what we do 1. We Are Still Able To Make A Positive Impact On That Person When we rub elbows with a person unlike ourselves- we can become unsettled We come up against another s values For some, it scares them- even if the impact stays with you Illus- Novels & Radio Take a good book- if you like to read, a good novel can transport you into another world Take for example, The Lord Of The Rings Or Heaven Is Real Or Harry Potter And The Sorcerer s Stone Or even just an ordinary newspaper Ques- Isn t that why we read them- for its impact, and novelty? You might remember the book burnings that took place after Sept 11 th Several groups collected Qu rans and burned them as an act of deviance and outrage The Nazi s did the same thing during the rise of Hitler too Or consider the radio stations you have pre-selected in your car What others do should not change what we do Jesus calls us to the highest standard- not the lowest Jesus calls us to service Jesus calls us to love Jesus calls us to be merciful- even when it is the farthest thing you want to do To live by the code, Do Unto Others And Then Split might be common But it is a perversion of The Golden Rule III. MERCY IS AN ACTION- MERE TALK WON T DO

MT 5:7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 6 Think of what being merciful avails you, for there are benefits You gain an attractive quality- people are naturally attracted to you Life s burdens are eased- you flow through life with greater grace and ease You gain spiritual power- to extend your ministry as your influence grows And as Jesus says- when you most need it and want it- mercy will be shown back to you Illus- VBS 2018 We all know that of all those who need mercy the most- we ought to include the defenseless, powerless, and small That includes kids- but also the disadvantaged- and those down and out We tend to do it unconsciously, for we all know children need to be supervised until they reach the age of maturity We saw examples of this in VBS this year All of our children had a great time And they will take the experience with them Ques- And isn t that an example to give mercy where it is needed? Jesus is merciful- so we too extend grace and mercy Jesus is charitable- so we too extend charity to our children Jesus is thoughtful- so we too plan and present Bible lessons that will influence them for a lifetime And every VBS attendees will remember the experience That s what you do when you extend mercy You are remembered You are looked upon favorably, and you are blessed When you are merciful you leave a legacy behind you One that blesses you One which has the power and weight of God behind you too Conclusion There is a sober warning in the epistle of James. He says, JAS 2:13 judgment is without mercy and no mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. That s the way of the world- but not us The merciful are members of an exclusive community- the fortunate few It is an immense power- one which heals, redeems, renews, and restores It is one which we can choose- that s the way Christ was- and that s what he wants for me and you End of Sermon Prayer July 29, 2018 Fort Barnwell Baptist Church Fort Barnwell, NC 28526 Reese Blanchett 2018 Sermon outlines may be used for preaching and teaching purposes But may not be published or sold. Disclaimer: I wish to express my gratitude to all the saints before me who are traveling the Narrow Way.
